Project Brief / Narrative
The topic of Design Studio VI is ‘Sustaining Humanities’ - Architecture of people, place and time,
a role in making a place civilized by making a community more livable.
In the 1800s, tin mining industry started in Malaya after the arrival of Chinese immigrants, the
lake contributed to the tin mining industry and has been abandoned after 1970s, and lake was
filled up and left unattended before the Titiwangsa Lake Gardens were designed in 1980 by Rio
Takahashi, a Japanese landscape architect. This project site context is Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur.
This project aims to provide a food and hang out center for the community. The site, is opposite
Titiwangsa Lake Garden, an empty flat ground, is considered a suitable site for the project due to
it has the potential to be transformed into a sustainable infrastructure that provide social
interaction and cultural identity, where many local are living close by and in need for a center
which could attract other user groups and provide a more energetic lifestyle as well as be part of
the existing community.
The major issue is the user group that engages to the site, mostly locals that stay within the site
area, and the appearance of culture building, which become an obstruction to our site. Hence,
the culture of Titiwangsa has slowly faded. The solution of this major issue, is by pervading the
past history into future through architecture, and provide a new refreshing new landmark of
gathering space, promoting quality urban lifestyle overall harmonic landscapes to the site.
There are several reasons for this. Among them are; firstly is the fact that food is fundamental to
life and the well of our origin, thus it becomes a centerpiece of family gathering and social
functions happening. Secondly with the interaction between each community it will stir up the
community and bring positive feedback to the site. In addition, the center aim to reminisce the
past history and bringing it back to enhance with the spirit of Titiwangsa, while promoting the
food culture which is traditional local food, and designed to catalyst the locals with a more
interactive & energetic environment. In addition, the locals / foreigners will be attract and will
take the chance to participate in community functions.
The objectives, programs, and physical facilities for a center for the community should encourage
to provide a space where people can eat while learn Malaysia culture through their fingers. An
important objective is not just learning but also understanding how it came together and bring
back what can be taken away.
