4. EVOLVING ARCHITECTURE:
SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION THROUGH DESIGN Master Thesis 01
year February to July 2018
location Old Town Suzhou, China
The project is in the Northern East part of the old town of Suzhou. The originality of this venture
is to expand the concept of sustainability from a purely functional and environmental view
towards the integration and implication of social and cultural aspects.
WithWith the upcoming construction of ‘luxury villas’ in the northerly part; the statuses of society
would drastically jump from the current local inhabitants of low and middle class to the coming of
high-income earners which can create disparity. Thus the proposed renovated market is the ideal
opportunity to challenge an interclass exchange to temporize gentrification through the current
functional purpose of the marketplace but also develop a socially ecological diverse sector
through the addition of a cultural layer that would guaranty a stimulated flexible architectural
space.

7. market place timeline occupancy | ground floor plan
It is an approach to the creation of spatial
pattern and organisation that would enhance
and generate social cohesion in a sustainable
environment.
TheThe choice to focus on the existing market,
considered as the heart of the chosen area, is
due to the fact that markets in general are
living proof of social human interaction which
currently are in a danger of extinction as a
result of growing alternative forms of
commerce such as e-commerce.

9. A SOFT REGENERATION IN SUZHOUPost Grad. Yr.1 Sem.1 02
year September to December 2016
location Suzhou, China
The project for a soft regeneration is based in the region named as Panmen located in the North
of Suzhou. It is defined as a big island surrounded by a highway in the North and surrounded
from the East, West and South side by river.
Due to these specificities, Panmen does not have many points of entry thus it tends to be isolat-
ed. In the North; some entrances are large enough for cars. However, the situation in the center,
is more complex as ‘roads’ tend to be small alleys only accessible by two wheels vehicles or by
foot. The only access provided in the South is a small bridge.
regeneration perspective | riverside view
Concentration of towers in the North to create a visible
barrier between the open space and the carpet housing.
It will be a buffer zone to lessen the noise and transition
area for the public activities.
The sector is in between alleys along which we can have
some good feelings while walking along with the transition be-
tween towers and carpet housing.
Concentration of carpet housing in the center - for the diversi-
ty in the population for the area, low costing for construc-
tion, promotes social interactions between the residents and
strengthens their feeling of safety and security
Relationship between the old and new architecture; the fluidi-
ty of merging both to create a nice atmosphere along the riv-
erside. Altogether with open space for exterior activities.

year March to June 2016
location Lishui, China
collaboration Haurdhan Dhiresh
The project focuses on the renovation of a village house in the south of Nanjing. The goal is to
improve the owners’ living style by implanting new ideas or sustainable technology. The outcome
of this venture is the import of new schemes in lightweight structures and technology.
The 3 main ideas are to, firstly, include a garden similar to a mauritian one with a variety of green-
ery suitable to all seasons. Secondly, is a pergola in between of the main house and outside edi-
fice. And, lastly, to add modules in the main house as an innovative method to improve the users’
standard of living.

Existing Building with its additional edifice in the yard.
The presence of the brown box is to illustrate the biggest
change in the additional edifice i.e the removal of walls to
create an outdoor kitchen and sitting area.
The creation of a corridor(represented by the red rectan-
gle) was imperative so that the outer edifice can be
easily accessed during winter season or rainy days as it
held the kitchen facility for the owners.
The purple shapes give an approximative idea of the
structures being added:
A - Enlarging the main building entrance
B - Exterior gathering area
C - A parking
‘Green inclusion’ idea taking shape - the addition of
trees and a variety of plants combining with the new fea-
