Stimulating local participation and ownership is a fundamental
principle of sustainable tourism development.

The success of participatory tourism development is defined by
location-specific circumstances (Tosun, 2000).

Knowledge of certain factors in the regional political, socioeconomic and cultural environment can bring valuable insight
into how to better engage local participation.

farmers in the Eastern Rhodopes can be increased.
Communication campaigns can be launched, explicitly
relating the opportunity for economic gain to the natural
environment, cultural heritage and local handicrafts.
Local community members can effectively participate in
tourism development through their engagement in data
collection and monitoring.
The nature, aims of, and mutual benefits from sector
collaboration need to be clearly communicated.
NTG can provide strategic leadership in bridging different

The success of participatory tourism development is defined by location-specific circumstances (Tosun, 2000). Knowledge of certain factors in the regional political, socioeconomic and cultural environment can bring valuable insight into how to better engage local participation. Decision-making 2 Polarization of views: Entrepreneurs vs. Authorities  Tendency to search the fault in others Entrepreneurs: “As a young entrepreneur in tourism, I have many views, but nobody wanted to hear them out so far.” Vs.   • 15. Recommendations 2 • • • • • Direct linkages between tourism entrepreneurs and farmers in the Eastern Rhodopes can be increased. Communication campaigns can be launched, explicitly relating the opportunity for economic gain to the natural environment, cultural heritage and local handicrafts. Local community members can effectively participate in tourism development through their engagement in data collection and monitoring. The nature, aims of, and mutual benefits from sector collaboration need to be clearly communicated. NTG can provide strategic leadership in bridging different Purpose – Entrepreneurship – Decision-making – Sector Collaboration – organizations in the Eastern Rhodopes.
