Student Stress Essay
College students generally do experience stress during there semesters. According to New York University Stress Can affect a student's physical health,
emotional well being, and academic success. Also, "College Students experience stress, related to changes in lifestyle, increased workloads, new
responsibilities, and interpersonal relationships."A Student stress survey was conducted by academia.edu to further support this claim. The results of the
survey were astonishing they found the top five sources of stress for that sample which were change in sleeping habits, vacations/breaks, increased
workload, change in eating habits, and new responsibilities. Stressors that students face throughout college is a new environment, new responsibilities,
which include deadlines, well written work, exams, and time management. Time management can be a crucial stressor in college because if a student
doesn't manage their time well, then it can lead to low grades or academic failure because their work was rushed. This also ties in with sleeping habits,
with poor time management students get poor sleep because they might be studying for an exam the night before. Stress can be critical to a student's
academic success, According to New YorkUniversity "six in ten college students report having felt so stressed they couldn't get their work done on one
or more occasions." This can also affect their well being because it can increase eating habits, causing them to overeat which is unhealthy.

Stress In College Students
Stress is common for college students. The transition from high school to college can become stressful because they're deciding what they want to do
for their future. The lack of preparation for adulthood when choosing the right major for someone can become stressful. Once someone chooses their
degree, then they must take classes to get them to the degree. When college students step into reality knowing what classes to take can become
overwhelming. College students must know how to recognize and manage stress in these situations to become successful at what they want to achieve.
The essay "Common Sources of Stress" by Paul M. Insel and Walton T. Roth states stress comes from things we do often. Insel and Roth say, "Any

Insel and Roth mention ten different techniques for managing stress such as social support, communication, exercise, nutrition, sleep, time
management, cognitive techniques, worry constructively, take control, and problem–solve. People who handle stress properly are healthier and
accomplish their goals. Insel and Roth say, "People with a strong social support system are also better able to stand with the stress of major life
changes," because they have someone who will let them talk out their stress, rather than just hold it all in (118). If college students improve their time
managing the stress would not be as high. College students who recognize their stress can be successful at what they want to accomplish.
My transition from high school to college wasn't extremely stressful. Since I didn't move away it was not a major change in life. In high school,
there were stressful times, but not like in college. High school was laid back; however, college there are strict rules. For example, you can't miss
more than 2 weeks of class or you will get drop. Also, teachers will not accept late work or let you make up exams. I haven't had any problems with
either rule. The stressful part is the amount of homework and studying I have to do. I study every night because I don't want to fall behind in classes.
It's hard to stay on top of things because I work too. I generally close during the weekdays, so making time for

Deciding about picking the right college or making the right career choice can oftentimes be very stressful for teens in today's world. There are so
many questions runing through a teens mind when looking at colleges and the career that they would like to pursue. Schools tend to give teens some
options about some colleges but it's usually not enough unless you have your life planned out. With this amount of pressure to decide your whole life
when you're only 16–18 years old, it can be overwhelming when it really shouldn't be. When teens start to feel the pressure of becoming an adult and
having to make their own decisions, they contemplate whether or not it was a good or bad decision, and this, leading to their stress. Many teens
unjustifiably face excessive anxiety when trying to make choices that affect their adult plans which creates negative relationships....show more content...
Stress is a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances. People get stressed for all sorts of
different reasons and sometimes it's not always about big things. Studies say that teens are more stressed than any adult in today's society. The
expectations of today's teens are set very high and parents expect a lot out of their child. Parents often times don't tend to realize how much their child
is going through. The amount of papers and homework that students get, can make them feel like they're trapped in a hole and slowly trying to climb
out of it, before the deadline hits. When students get loads of homework, they have to figure out when they will have time to do it depending on their

The Effects Of Stress On College Students
Many students in college can deal with large amounts of stress in their educational careers. Handling stress poorly is a normal behavior in a
multitude of students at college is an overwhelming workload for many; however, stress can be managed in a healthier way than many do handle it.
Stress is caused by an onslaught of assignments all at once or multiple tests in the same day. Lack of sleep and drowsiness in class is caused by
stress; however, this will just further the stress because the student will not be paying attention in class. The problem is stress is so regularly handled in
the wrong way, such as drinking, putting offthe work, and late nights trying to finish procrastinated work. Stress; however, will be managed healthier
by not procrastinating, using herbal stress relieving techniques, and getting better sleep. If a student gets in a habit where they refuse to procrastinate
their assignments, then the overall work load that they feel is put on them is not as corpulent. Frequently scholars feel as if their tasks at hand become
too bothersome, they let them pile up. Procrastination can overall just end up leading to more stress, and all–nighters leading to a very unhealthy
cyclical cycle. A study done by the International Islamic University, Islamabad makes a statement saying that " Studies depict that procrastination has
an influence on the personality factors of the individual as well as his academic achievement and physiological well being among students" (

Essay On Stress In College Students
Many college students in the modern world are under a lot of stress from the world around them. This stress that they are experiencing can cause some
mental health issues. There are many factors that contribute to the stress and mental health problems of college students. One factor is the students are
in college away from the usual parental guidance that has overshadowed them the past 17–18 years of their lives. These students are now experiencing
the weight of the world on their shoulders and feel the stress of how they are ever going to be able to make their life work out. Another factor is
that students are now feeling the financial burden that is created while in college. Students are now working to pay for not only college but also
everyday life. This is something that many students have not been used to in the past couple of years. There is also a lot of pressure on the students
in college by their family and society to be successful in whatever they enter into while in college. People are expecting the students to come out and
be able to make a lot of money right off the bat. The family entity itself can cause stress for the student that is away at college. For example, while
away at college, a student finds out that his/her parents decided to get divorced. This can cause a lot of stress and anxiety on the student. This can then
lead them to slumping into depression, and worrying so much that they are not able to perform the way that they need to to be successful

College Students and Stress
Today a college education can overload students with too many stressful situations. Not only does Stress overload today's college students, but it is
also the leading cause of personality disorders. In her essay, Cathy Bell explains that major depressive disorder strikes 5–12% of men and 10–20% of
women; half of these people will have more than one occurrence and 15% of them will commit suicide ("Depression for the young"). For instance,
many depressives are first recognized and treated during their years in college. For a large amount of people, depression exposes itself because of
traumatizing experiences, such as leaving home and/or academic stress. For other students alcohol and drugs become a...show more content...
First there are the external triggers such as physical environment, social interaction, major life events and daily hassles. Then there are the internal
triggers like lifestyle choices, negative self–talk, mind traps, and lastly stressful personality traits. One or more of these triggers can easily influence
college students ("Stress Management for Patient and Physician"). In reality it is most often the internal triggers that take the college kids down for the
count. Too much caffeine, not enough sleep, and an overloaded schedule. Hey, doesn't that sound like every college student's biography!
The Canadian Journal of Continuing Medical Education says
It is important to note that most of the stress that most of us have is actually self generated. This is a paradox because so many people think of
external stresses when they are upset (it is the weather, the boss, the spouse, and the stock market). Recognizing that we create most of our own upsets,
however, is an important first step to dealing with them. (Posen)
Doctor Posen states the obvious here, most people act impulsively while influenced by stress without really thinking about why they are doing it.
Impulsive internal stresses are probably the leading cause mental, physical and emotional

College Students: Stress Essay
Your heart rate steadily increases, your vision sharpens, your muscles tense, and you begin to sweat. This is all a natural response of the human body
to distressing events. The body reacts to stress by activating the nervous system and releasing hormones, which enhances an individual's ability to work
while under pressure. Stress isn't always blamed on abrupt events, but can also by at fault of a long–lasting situation. Stress is a healthy occurrence,
but only in moderation. Long–term stress can release a constant stream of stress hormones over a prolonged period of time, wearing down the body's

Because more, and more time is being dedicated to school work, over scheduled students are finding less, and less time for extracurricular activities
involving athletics, music, art, friends, and volunteer work. Unfortunately, extracurricular activities are emphasized to be the second utmost important
time dedication of a student. Aside from academic success, colleges, and employers like to see potential students and employees to be versatile and
well–balanced with how they spend their time. Extracurricular participation has been show to have many benefits to students, and is even known to
relieve stress. Such activities allow a student to be around his or her friends, make new friends, develop life long skills such as communication,
teamwork, problem solving, leadership, time management, and allow them to discover interests (Dowshen). Also, based on the Barna study on
emotional fatigue, grad students are prone to having their social relationships stunted because of commitment to their studies. A lack in social
involvement can prevent some students from the development of social relationships, and disengaging them from family relationships. Because of such
a social isolation, grad students have almost no means to vent stress or to satisfy their emotional needs (Repak). Reported by, The Horatio Alger

College is a time of extreme stress due to societal and parental pressures. College students have expectations they have to live up to in order to fulfill
and satisfy the needs of both their parents and society. Stress is expressed through a variety of symptoms that can be hazardous to student's physical
and mental health. With such high expectations to do well during college, students may become sleep deprived, which impairs mental capacity, but
sleep deprivation is only one of a vast array of symptoms. Stress is present in all aspects of life and there are multiple causes of stress, especially,
during the college period which may present itself through many symptoms, but with stress, there are also various coping methods to help students

According to Lupien, McEwan, Gunnar, and Heim (2009), going off to college involves significant adjustments to their daily routines; sleeping and
eating habits, time–management skills, and stress levels will be altered in one way or another. First–year students have to adjust to the new school
environment, different social settings, and new schedules, all without the help and guidance from their parents, who have been there for them for
eighteen years. Over 30% of college freshman report that they feel overwhelmed (Klainberg, Ewing, & Ryan, 2010), where some students even opt
to work as they juggle their class and work schedules. Some students work at a job or study harder than others, but they are all trying to get degrees
so maybe one day they will have meaningful and significant lives. It is a constant struggle for everyone who is trying desperately to make him or
herself into a success. And every college student wants to be involved in society in a positive manner, allowing contribution of their ideals and values to
others. Stress in college is caused by many other influencing factors. One of these important factors would have to be the expectations set by parents.
They are normally the reason students are in college, so pleasing them by getting good grades is almost mandatory. The thought of displeasing out
parents can be detrimental to our thought process; meaning that it most likely would cause impaired

The Stressful Life of College Students Essay
The Stressful Life of College Students
Modern life is full of demands, frustrations, hassles, and deadlines. Everyone experiences stress as it is a natural part of human life. Our bodies
have a built mechanism for responding to stress. However, during a certain period of time, people tend to face more stress than usual. One of such
periods is college life. It can be very stressful for some people, especially for those who are not used to carrying out with so many responsibilities.
Students spend most of their time balancing classes, projects, tests, final exams, personal life, and work; that is enough to make anyone feel
overwhelmed. This stress can cause multiples problems, not just emotional, but physicals as well.

It becomes a problem to manage time effectively and distribute it to have balance. A lot of students are used to leaving all the work for the last minute.
They follow a false idea that everything can be done before the deadline. However, it is not the case with education. Procrastination makes students do
things halfway and not retain all needed information.
The effects of constant stress on a student's body are devastating and may have long–term consequences. When stress escalates without coping with it,
numerous troublesome psychological and physiological conditions may occur. First, the stressful life of college students may result in such physical
problems as sleeping disorders, breathing difficulties, headaches, and a loss of appetite. In addition, fatigue, colds, weight change, teeth grinding,
increased alcohol and drug use are also common. Unfortunately, stress is often linked to the immune system suppression. It increases the chances of
altering any existing disease. teeth grinding, increased alcohol and drug use are also common. Unfortunately, stress is often linked to the immune
system suppression. It increases the chances of altering any existing disease.
Second, stress may result in a number of emotional problems. The most common ones are the feeling of being overwhelmed, depression, fear, and
anger. However, students may also experience irritability, mood swings, bad temper, worrying, nervous laugh, and crying spells.

Essay On Student Stress
College students are stressed all the time, so much that it has become a daily emotion in their academic career. College students stress increases
when we go away to college because we have a lot of freedom that we never had before. Some students have been so dependent on their parents for
so long that when it comes to daily task they are at so confused on how to properly complete it. In college we experience academic, financial,
family, social, and family stress. Stress is a normal human behavior but it can physically and mentally harm us. To deal with stress one has to find
ways to cope in order to decrease their stress level. Ideal coping mechanisms for a college student is counseling, communication , and relaxation
techniques instead of leisure activities. As we go through the transition of becoming college students we become vulnerable to stress because we are
trying to find ourself, keep up with our academics, have a social life and adjust to a new life. It becomes so much for a college student that they easily
become stressed. Even if students are physiologically stressed they don't seek counseling, however others try to look for counseling because it gives
social support and interpersonal coping techniques that a college student can seek.In the article College Student Stress and Mental Health: Examination
of Stigmatic Views on Mental health Counseling Stated " This study suggested a need to increase students' use of mental health counseling services.

Typical November nights in a college students residence include cramming obligated to catch for papers due in December, and exams that lurk around
the corner on a topic you felt up on sleep for. Deadlines and due dates are non–existent for students until the night before since the preoccupations;
partying and overall good times which lack libraries and study sessions, expel more excitement than the adrenaline rush of a chemistry chronicle or a
pre–cal problem. At most schools, the days of dorm rules, dress codes, and even mandatory class attendance is long gone. But while freedom can be

This added pressure does nothing for students but makes them think that if they don't get wonderful marks in school that they wont be accepted at
home anymore. When in reality all the parents want is their kid to get a great job, and have a future.
Another major factor in adding to the stress level in during college life would have to be the almighty job. Most students that go to a community
college have a full time job they attend to after their full schedule of classes. Most jobs expect that you have no other outside life other then thinking
about what you are going to do next time you come into work. Supervisors can't empathize with you because they themselves have been working the
same job for the past ten years, and have never even entered a college classroom. They demand that you always be able to work no matter what
school work is due the next week. It becomes really hard for a full time student to hold a full time job and get by without stressing out every night. This
stress is not something that stays at the job, it follows through to the classroom.
The most important of these causes of stress would have to be the approval from others, and the pressure applied by peers. Especially in a new
environment, most people eagerly seek acceptance. That may mean conforming, whether it's to friends' attitudes toward alcohol, drugs, partying,
studying, or sex. This change from high school to college life sometimes can lead to

Nowadays, it is quite normal for people to feel stressed, including the young generations. Students in universities may suffer from stress due to a wide
variety of reasons, such as personal issues and financial problems, which may create anxiety. According to research, being under pressure can affect
those students mentally and emotionally and even physically, because they overthink their problems, failing in concentrating on their work, and
sometimes making choices is difficult for them. Stressed students tend to become nervous easily, and lacking confidence makes them consider it tough
to overcome fears and anxiety. Students in universities can be unable to deal with psychological problems properly, they may display negative
behaviours such as drinking and smoking excessively, being rude and avoiding challenges. What is more, physical aches including muscle tension are
caused by stress as well, and it may produce dizziness, sleeping problems and unhealthy eating habits (NHS, 2017). However, stress does not have
any medical definition, when it causes problems, the problems may aggravate its symptoms (Mind, 2017). For college students, it is necessary to
handle the pressure properly and positively, schools and governments also have to take it seriously. This essay will illustrate the cause and effect of
stress, and offer solutions to stressed students.
Stress may come in two ways. Normally, it may be triggered by specific things or events like "personal issues", work and

College Stress and Prevention of College Stress
College Stress and Prevention of College Stress Getting into university and becoming a college student used to be fun because of the friends and
memories they would make. However, college life can be stressful now, especially for first–year students. What is stress? Richard Lazarus and Susan
Folkman defined stress as " the result of an individuals' perceptions that they do not have the resources to cope with a perceived situation from the past,
present or future." (Lazarus and Folkman, 1984). In fact, stress is inevitable. Sometimes stress forces students to reach their goals and get their tasks
done like studies and homework. But when stress is too much, it may stop students from working properly, and accomplishing things. College...show

Next, financial problem is another cause of college stress. The tuition, books and other fees are getting more expensive each year. In 2013, the average
in–state tuition at public colleges and universities is $8,893. (Bidwell, 2013) For students who study out of state, the fee is even higher. Some college
freshmen still have financial support from parents but some may not. Most of them have to take on debt. Due to the weak economy, institutions limit
the budgets on scholarships and financial aid; therefore, the students now take on more debt than the earlier generation (Joseph, 2013). Being educated
is worth it but most college students are struggling with paying the fees. For those who do not have support from family, they may have to work and
go to school at the same time. These create a high amount of stress to freshmen. Last but not least, horrible eating habits undoubtedly lead to stress. It
can make our body malnourished that means not balanced diet. Unhealthy food like McDonald's does not contain the right ingredients for our body
and brainwork properly. Without certain nutrients like endorphins, we would not stay claim in tough time such as studying for finals. "Too much
caffeine can lead to poor concentration and decrease effectiveness, sleep disturbances, and increased levels of cortisol in the blood, as well as other
negative effects." as Dr. Scott mentioned, too much

The very fact that dreams like Jack's are common suggests that college is a stressful situation for young people. The cause of this stress can be academic,

In addition to academic stress, students often feel financial pressure. Most of the college students work part–time while attending college. They have
more responsibilities than just maintaining their GPA. Paying for their school tuition and textbooks are the big two unavoidable expenses that they
have to spend. Students often complain and feel frustrated about how much they have to pay for their textbooks and other materials related to their
classes. Besides these expenses, students also have other financial responsibilities as well. Paying the rent, car payments and car insurance are stressful
issues that students have to deal with. Like many other college students and myself, my girlfriend has to work two part–time jobs in order for her to
have enough money to pay her bills. Buying clothes, movie tickets, gifts for friends' birthdays are other pressures that students have to cop with while
they are in school. Base on these expenses, it is pretty obvious that students must have some sort of incomes that they can rely on for the expeneses so
that they can service in school and accomplish their dreams.
Along with academic and financial worries, students also face personal pressures. For those who have a boyfriend or a girlfriend, they have to deal
with their partner's attitude and differences. For example, I

Numerous College students suffer from financial stress not only does it impact them emotionally, but it also impacts their grades. I think it is
important to note that college students should only be worrying about one thing, and one thing only, which is school. College students are the
minds of our future, which is why we need to help them understand how to cope and also alleviate all the unnecessary stress on them and let them
focus on their studies and grades. First, while financial stress can be very upsetting most college students will go through it at some point or another
and that is why they should learn how to cope with financial stress. Before knowing how to cope with financial stress it is important in
understanding what financial stress is and how it affects people, since financial stress affects each person very differently. Financial stress can be
defined in multiple ways, but the most basic definition is stressing out due to money issues, like not being able to pay your college tuition or bills.
Now for some college students financial stress will impact them more than others; some students may just be stressed out about it throughout the year
where other students will actually have to put less focus in on school and more focus on paying their bills causing a toll on their grades. Coping with
financial stress is not easy but it can be done by a couple methods that Bank of America share about having better money habits, that will in the long

College Student Stress Essay

  • 1. Student Stress Essay College students generally do experience stress during there semesters. According to New York University Stress Can affect a student's physical health, emotional well being, and academic success. Also, "College Students experience stress, related to changes in lifestyle, increased workloads, new responsibilities, and interpersonal relationships."A Student stress survey was conducted by academia.edu to further support this claim. The results of the survey were astonishing they found the top five sources of stress for that sample which were change in sleeping habits, vacations/breaks, increased workload, change in eating habits, and new responsibilities. Stressors that students face throughout college is a new environment, new responsibilities, which include deadlines, well written work, exams, and time management. Time management can be a crucial stressor in college because if a student doesn't manage their time well, then it can lead to low grades or academic failure because their work was rushed. This also ties in with sleeping habits, with poor time management students get poor sleep because they might be studying for an exam the night before. Stress can be critical to a student's academic success, According to New YorkUniversity "six in ten college students report having felt so stressed they couldn't get their work done on one or more occasions." This can also affect their well being because it can increase eating habits, causing them to overeat which is unhealthy. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Stress In College Students Stress is common for college students. The transition from high school to college can become stressful because they're deciding what they want to do for their future. The lack of preparation for adulthood when choosing the right major for someone can become stressful. Once someone chooses their degree, then they must take classes to get them to the degree. When college students step into reality knowing what classes to take can become overwhelming. College students must know how to recognize and manage stress in these situations to become successful at what they want to achieve. The essay "Common Sources of Stress" by Paul M. Insel and Walton T. Roth states stress comes from things we do often. Insel and Roth say, "Any major...show more content... Insel and Roth mention ten different techniques for managing stress such as social support, communication, exercise, nutrition, sleep, time management, cognitive techniques, worry constructively, take control, and problem–solve. People who handle stress properly are healthier and accomplish their goals. Insel and Roth say, "People with a strong social support system are also better able to stand with the stress of major life changes," because they have someone who will let them talk out their stress, rather than just hold it all in (118). If college students improve their time managing the stress would not be as high. College students who recognize their stress can be successful at what they want to accomplish. My transition from high school to college wasn't extremely stressful. Since I didn't move away it was not a major change in life. In high school, there were stressful times, but not like in college. High school was laid back; however, college there are strict rules. For example, you can't miss more than 2 weeks of class or you will get drop. Also, teachers will not accept late work or let you make up exams. I haven't had any problems with either rule. The stressful part is the amount of homework and studying I have to do. I study every night because I don't want to fall behind in classes. It's hard to stay on top of things because I work too. I generally close during the weekdays, so making time for Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Stress In College Essay Deciding about picking the right college or making the right career choice can oftentimes be very stressful for teens in today's world. There are so many questions runing through a teens mind when looking at colleges and the career that they would like to pursue. Schools tend to give teens some options about some colleges but it's usually not enough unless you have your life planned out. With this amount of pressure to decide your whole life when you're only 16–18 years old, it can be overwhelming when it really shouldn't be. When teens start to feel the pressure of becoming an adult and having to make their own decisions, they contemplate whether or not it was a good or bad decision, and this, leading to their stress. Many teens unjustifiably face excessive anxiety when trying to make choices that affect their adult plans which creates negative relationships....show more content... Stress is a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances. People get stressed for all sorts of different reasons and sometimes it's not always about big things. Studies say that teens are more stressed than any adult in today's society. The expectations of today's teens are set very high and parents expect a lot out of their child. Parents often times don't tend to realize how much their child is going through. The amount of papers and homework that students get, can make them feel like they're trapped in a hole and slowly trying to climb out of it, before the deadline hits. When students get loads of homework, they have to figure out when they will have time to do it depending on their home life or extracurricular Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. The Effects Of Stress On College Students Many students in college can deal with large amounts of stress in their educational careers. Handling stress poorly is a normal behavior in a multitude of students at college is an overwhelming workload for many; however, stress can be managed in a healthier way than many do handle it. Stress is caused by an onslaught of assignments all at once or multiple tests in the same day. Lack of sleep and drowsiness in class is caused by stress; however, this will just further the stress because the student will not be paying attention in class. The problem is stress is so regularly handled in the wrong way, such as drinking, putting offthe work, and late nights trying to finish procrastinated work. Stress; however, will be managed healthier by not procrastinating, using herbal stress relieving techniques, and getting better sleep. If a student gets in a habit where they refuse to procrastinate their assignments, then the overall work load that they feel is put on them is not as corpulent. Frequently scholars feel as if their tasks at hand become too bothersome, they let them pile up. Procrastination can overall just end up leading to more stress, and all–nighters leading to a very unhealthy cyclical cycle. A study done by the International Islamic University, Islamabad makes a statement saying that " Studies depict that procrastination has an influence on the personality factors of the individual as well as his academic achievement and physiological well being among students" ( Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Essay On Stress In College Students Many college students in the modern world are under a lot of stress from the world around them. This stress that they are experiencing can cause some mental health issues. There are many factors that contribute to the stress and mental health problems of college students. One factor is the students are in college away from the usual parental guidance that has overshadowed them the past 17–18 years of their lives. These students are now experiencing the weight of the world on their shoulders and feel the stress of how they are ever going to be able to make their life work out. Another factor is that students are now feeling the financial burden that is created while in college. Students are now working to pay for not only college but also everyday life. This is something that many students have not been used to in the past couple of years. There is also a lot of pressure on the students in college by their family and society to be successful in whatever they enter into while in college. People are expecting the students to come out and be able to make a lot of money right off the bat. The family entity itself can cause stress for the student that is away at college. For example, while away at college, a student finds out that his/her parents decided to get divorced. This can cause a lot of stress and anxiety on the student. This can then lead them to slumping into depression, and worrying so much that they are not able to perform the way that they need to to be successful Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. College Students and Stress Essay College Students and Stress Today a college education can overload students with too many stressful situations. Not only does Stress overload today's college students, but it is also the leading cause of personality disorders. In her essay, Cathy Bell explains that major depressive disorder strikes 5–12% of men and 10–20% of women; half of these people will have more than one occurrence and 15% of them will commit suicide ("Depression for the young"). For instance, many depressives are first recognized and treated during their years in college. For a large amount of people, depression exposes itself because of traumatizing experiences, such as leaving home and/or academic stress. For other students alcohol and drugs become a...show more content... First there are the external triggers such as physical environment, social interaction, major life events and daily hassles. Then there are the internal triggers like lifestyle choices, negative self–talk, mind traps, and lastly stressful personality traits. One or more of these triggers can easily influence college students ("Stress Management for Patient and Physician"). In reality it is most often the internal triggers that take the college kids down for the count. Too much caffeine, not enough sleep, and an overloaded schedule. Hey, doesn't that sound like every college student's biography! The Canadian Journal of Continuing Medical Education says It is important to note that most of the stress that most of us have is actually self generated. This is a paradox because so many people think of external stresses when they are upset (it is the weather, the boss, the spouse, and the stock market). Recognizing that we create most of our own upsets, however, is an important first step to dealing with them. (Posen) Doctor Posen states the obvious here, most people act impulsively while influenced by stress without really thinking about why they are doing it. Impulsive internal stresses are probably the leading cause mental, physical and emotional Get more content on HelpWriting.net

This is all a natural response of the human body to distressing events. The body reacts to stress by activating the nervous system and releasing hormones, which enhances an individual's ability to work while under pressure. Stress isn't always blamed on abrupt events, but can also by at fault of a long–lasting situation. Stress is a healthy occurrence, but only in moderation. Aside from academic success, colleges, and employers like to see potential students and employees to be versatile and well–balanced with how they spend their time. Extracurricular participation has been show to have many benefits to students, and is even known to relieve stress. Such activities allow a student to be around his or her friends, make new friends, develop life long skills such as communication, teamwork, problem solving, leadership, time management, and allow them to discover interests (Dowshen). Also, based on the Barna study on emotional fatigue, grad students are prone to having their social relationships stunted because of commitment to their studies. A lack in social involvement can prevent some students from the development of social relationships, and disengaging them from family relationships. Because of such a social isolation, grad students have almost no means to vent stress or to satisfy their emotional needs (Repak). • 8. Stress Among College Students Essay examples College is a time of extreme stress due to societal and parental pressures. College students have expectations they have to live up to in order to fulfill and satisfy the needs of both their parents and society. Stress is expressed through a variety of symptoms that can be hazardous to student's physical and mental health. With such high expectations to do well during college, students may become sleep deprived, which impairs mental capacity, but sleep deprivation is only one of a vast array of symptoms. According to Lupien, McEwan, Gunnar, and Heim (2009), going off to college involves significant adjustments to their daily routines; sleeping and eating habits, time–management skills, and stress levels will be altered in one way or another. First–year students have to adjust to the new school environment, different social settings, and new schedules, all without the help and guidance from their parents, who have been there for them for eighteen years. Over 30% of college freshman report that they feel overwhelmed (Klainberg, Ewing, & Ryan, 2010), where some students even opt to work as they juggle their class and work schedules. Some students work at a job or study harder than others, but they are all trying to get degrees so maybe one day they will have meaningful and significant lives. It is a constant struggle for everyone who is trying desperately to make him or herself into a success. And every college student wants to be involved in society in a positive manner, allowing contribution of their ideals and values to others. Stress in college is caused by many other influencing factors. One of these important factors would have to be the expectations set by parents. They are normally the reason students are in college, so pleasing them by getting good grades is almost mandatory. • 13. Essay On Student Stress College students are stressed all the time, so much that it has become a daily emotion in their academic career. College students stress increases when we go away to college because we have a lot of freedom that we never had before. Some students have been so dependent on their parents for so long that when it comes to daily task they are at so confused on how to properly complete it. In college we experience academic, financial, family, social, and family stress. Stress is a normal human behavior but it can physically and mentally harm us. To deal with stress one has to find ways to cope in order to decrease their stress level. Ideal coping mechanisms for a college student is counseling, communication , and relaxation techniques instead of leisure activities. • 14. College Stress Essay Typical November nights in a college students residence include cramming obligated to catch for papers due in December, and exams that lurk around the corner on a topic you felt up on sleep for. Deadlines and due dates are non–existent for students until the night before since the preoccupations; partying and overall good times which lack libraries and study sessions, expel more excitement than the adrenaline rush of a chemistry chronicle or a pre–cal problem. At most schools, the days of dorm rules, dress codes, and even mandatory class attendance is long gone. But while freedom can be exciting and fun, it can also be stressful because no one is telling you what to do. You have to make a lot of decisions on your own and readjust your own...show more content... This added pressure does nothing for students but makes them think that if they don't get wonderful marks in school that they wont be accepted at home anymore. When in reality all the parents want is their kid to get a great job, and have a future. Another major factor in adding to the stress level in during college life would have to be the almighty job. Most students that go to a community college have a full time job they attend to after their full schedule of classes. Most jobs expect that you have no other outside life other then thinking about what you are going to do next time you come into work. Supervisors can't empathize with you because they themselves have been working the same job for the past ten years, and have never even entered a college classroom. They demand that you always be able to work no matter what school work is due the next week. It becomes really hard for a full time student to hold a full time job and get by without stressing out every night. This stress is not something that stays at the job, it follows through to the classroom. The most important of these causes of stress would have to be the approval from others, and the pressure applied by peers. Especially in a new environment, most people eagerly seek acceptance. That may mean conforming, whether it's to friends' attitudes toward alcohol, drugs, partying, studying, or sex. This change from high school to college life sometimes can lead to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Nowadays, it is quite normal for people to feel stressed, including the young generations. Students in universities may suffer from stress due to a wide variety of reasons, such as personal issues and financial problems, which may create anxiety. According to research, being under pressure can affect those students mentally and emotionally and even physically, because they overthink their problems, failing in concentrating on their work, and sometimes making choices is difficult for them. Stressed students tend to become nervous easily, and lacking confidence makes them consider it tough to overcome fears and anxiety. Students in universities can be unable to deal with psychological problems properly, they may display negative behaviours such as drinking and smoking excessively, being rude and avoiding challenges. What is more, physical aches including muscle tension are caused by stress as well, and it may produce dizziness, sleeping problems and unhealthy eating habits (NHS, 2017). However, stress does not have any medical definition, when it causes problems, the problems may aggravate its symptoms (Mind, 2017). For college students, it is necessary to handle the pressure properly and positively, schools and governments also have to take it seriously. This essay will illustrate the cause and effect of stress, and offer solutions to stressed students. Stress may come in two ways. College Stress and Prevention of College Stress College Stress and Prevention of College Stress Getting into university and becoming a college student used to be fun because of the friends and memories they would make. However, college life can be stressful now, especially for first–year students. What is stress? Richard Lazarus and Susan Folkman defined stress as " the result of an individuals' perceptions that they do not have the resources to cope with a perceived situation from the past, present or future." (Lazarus and Folkman, 1984). In fact, stress is inevitable. Sometimes stress forces students to reach their goals and get their tasks done like studies and homework. But when stress is too much, it may stop students from working properly, and accomplishing things. College...show more content... Next, financial problem is another cause of college stress. The tuition, books and other fees are getting more expensive each year. In 2013, the average in–state tuition at public colleges and universities is $8,893. (Bidwell, 2013) For students who study out of state, the fee is even higher. Some college freshmen still have financial support from parents but some may not. Most of them have to take on debt. Due to the weak economy, institutions limit the budgets on scholarships and financial aid; therefore, the students now take on more debt than the earlier generation (Joseph, 2013).
