Structure of my
music video
Narrative, Performance or
both?
• I have chose to make my music video only narrative. Many drum and
bass music videos tend to be just narrative based so I feel that following
conventions would be the best idea. Drum and bass fans do not focus on
the words as much, they just fixate on the beat, the bass and also the
tempo of the music. As this genre stems from dance music, listeners are
usually busy dancing instead of singing the lyrics so therefore Hannah
singing would be off irrelevance. The original video is also just narrative
and does not contain any singing what so ever; this too has also
influenced my choice to just have my music video as a narrative.
• However, I do have an idea of ‘breaking the fourth wall’ by my artist
looking straight into the camera and singing/saying key words such as
the title of the song ‘afterglow’. This will make the audience feel
included as the eye contact will make it feel that Hannah (the
protagonist) is just speaking to them.
• By doing this, it also gives a quick break from the narrative and will
allow the audience to see something different very briefly.
Mise-En-Scene
• Lighting- The lighting used will be a mixture of low key lighting and high key
lighting. In terms of low key lighting, I will use it to portray the feeling of
night time which is when ‘partying’ and drinking usually occurs for the
younger generation. I have also chosen to use low key lighting as I want to
portray a feeling of mystery and the unknown of what is going to happen to
the protagonist in the music video. Some of my shots will included bright
laser lights (which can usually be found at clubs, parties and gigs). In terms
of high key lighting I will be using it to illuminate my protagonists face and
expressions when using the black background (As seen in the picture
bellow). The high key lighting can be used to break up the shots and also
give a feel of disorientation along with the low key lighting.

darkened room. You can still see that we
are filming in a dark room but you can see
her expressions and movements clearly.
Mise-En-Scene
• Costume- Hannah (my protagonists) costume is of a very stereotypical outfit that a
person in the ages of 15-26 would wear. Hannah will be wearing ‘acid wash’ jeans, a
oversized black jersey type top, Nike branded shoes and a burgundy beanie hat (and
possibly in some shots a coat). In 2013, ‘beanie hats’ and oversized t-shirts have
become extremely popular for teenagers and young adults. I felt it would be
necessary for Hannah to wear such items of clothing so that my target audience
which includes teenagers and young adult can relate and connect to her through her
clothing at the very least. As well as this, due to the genre being drum and
bass, people who go out and listen to this music in clubs and bars do not ‘dress up’ i.e.
wear dresses and high heels as this prevents them from dancing. This is another
reason why I have dressed Hannah in this particular outfit as flat shoes and comfy but
fashionable clothes are being seen more regularly when adults go out to night clubs
now, meaning Hannah is portraying the element of hyper reality as she is portraying
reality in a media text, blurring the boundaries of what is real and what is not (Fredric
Jameson).

Mise-En-Scene
• Props- I have come up with some ideas of props. The first main prop will
include alcohol bottles/cans. I will shoot Hannah ‘Drinking’ from a chosen
alcohol bottle, which will then further along in the narrative alter her
behaviour. Popular drinks with teenager and young adults include Vodka. I
feel that if I used a popular drink my audience will be able to relate to my
narrative more as they too will understand the feeling of drinking and
hopefully be able feel some empathy toward my protagonist. More props
include the burgundy beanie hat (as mentioned in the slide beforehand)
and also makeup. I will shoot Hannah applying mascara to her eyes which
will late be smudged over her face as drinking the vodka has caused her to
become intoxicated. When people are drunk they usually look worse for
wear afterwards and smudge make up is the key to making Hannah look
rough.
Mise-En-Scene
• Sets- Sets include I room with all black walls, lit up via red lights
which I have filmed in at school. I will also be using my house as set
but only really my bedroom which will crop up in my music video
hardly at all. I have also filmed in the street at night more specifically
around my friends road which is a quiet ‘close’. Moreover I have also
filmed at Earls Court whilst seeing Calvin Harris. I have captured
shots of the crowd and the laser lights which will appear in my music
video to.
• Sounds- The sound will all be non-diegetic as only the audience will
be able to hear it as it will be played over the narrative.

Structure of my music video

  • 2. Narrative, Performance or both? • I have chose to make my music video only narrative. Many drum and bass music videos tend to be just narrative based so I feel that following conventions would be the best idea. Drum and bass fans do not focus on the words as much, they just fixate on the beat, the bass and also the tempo of the music. As this genre stems from dance music, listeners are usually busy dancing instead of singing the lyrics so therefore Hannah singing would be off irrelevance. The original video is also just narrative and does not contain any singing what so ever; this too has also influenced my choice to just have my music video as a narrative. • However, I do have an idea of ‘breaking the fourth wall’ by my artist looking straight into the camera and singing/saying key words such as the title of the song ‘afterglow’. This will make the audience feel included as the eye contact will make it feel that Hannah (the protagonist) is just speaking to them. • By doing this, it also gives a quick break from the narrative and will allow the audience to see something different very briefly.
  • 3. Mise-En-Scene • Lighting- The lighting used will be a mixture of low key lighting and high key lighting. In terms of low key lighting, I will use it to portray the feeling of night time which is when ‘partying’ and drinking usually occurs for the younger generation. I have also chosen to use low key lighting as I want to portray a feeling of mystery and the unknown of what is going to happen to the protagonist in the music video. Some of my shots will included bright laser lights (which can usually be found at clubs, parties and gigs). In terms of high key lighting I will be using it to illuminate my protagonists face and expressions when using the black background (As seen in the picture bellow). The high key lighting can be used to break up the shots and also give a feel of disorientation along with the low key lighting. The high key lighting here illuminates Hannah’s expressions of rubbing her hand with her face whilst being in a black darkened room. You can still see that we are filming in a dark room but you can see her expressions and movements clearly.
  • 4. Mise-En-Scene • Costume- Hannah (my protagonists) costume is of a very stereotypical outfit that a person in the ages of 15-26 would wear. Hannah will be wearing ‘acid wash’ jeans, a oversized black jersey type top, Nike branded shoes and a burgundy beanie hat (and possibly in some shots a coat). In 2013, ‘beanie hats’ and oversized t-shirts have become extremely popular for teenagers and young adults. I felt it would be necessary for Hannah to wear such items of clothing so that my target audience which includes teenagers and young adult can relate and connect to her through her clothing at the very least. As well as this, due to the genre being drum and bass, people who go out and listen to this music in clubs and bars do not ‘dress up’ i.e. wear dresses and high heels as this prevents them from dancing. This is another reason why I have dressed Hannah in this particular outfit as flat shoes and comfy but fashionable clothes are being seen more regularly when adults go out to night clubs now, meaning Hannah is portraying the element of hyper reality as she is portraying reality in a media text, blurring the boundaries of what is real and what is not (Fredric Jameson). Hannah in the beanie hat and the over sized t-shirt.
  • 5. Mise-En-Scene • Props- I have come up with some ideas of props. The first main prop will include alcohol bottles/cans. I will shoot Hannah ‘Drinking’ from a chosen alcohol bottle, which will then further along in the narrative alter her behaviour. Popular drinks with teenager and young adults include Vodka. I feel that if I used a popular drink my audience will be able to relate to my narrative more as they too will understand the feeling of drinking and hopefully be able feel some empathy toward my protagonist. More props include the burgundy beanie hat (as mentioned in the slide beforehand) and also makeup. I will shoot Hannah applying mascara to her eyes which will late be smudged over her face as drinking the vodka has caused her to become intoxicated. When people are drunk they usually look worse for wear afterwards and smudge make up is the key to making Hannah look rough.
  • 6. Mise-En-Scene • Sets- Sets include I room with all black walls, lit up via red lights which I have filmed in at school. I will also be using my house as set but only really my bedroom which will crop up in my music video hardly at all. I have also filmed in the street at night more specifically around my friends road which is a quiet ‘close’. Moreover I have also filmed at Earls Court whilst seeing Calvin Harris. I have captured shots of the crowd and the laser lights which will appear in my music video to. • Sounds- The sound will all be non-diegetic as only the audience will be able to hear it as it will be played over the narrative.
