2. THE HUMAN BRAIN
The brain is an organ that serves as the center of the nervous system in all the vertebrate
and most invertebrate animals.
The brain is the largest cluster of neurons in the body and is typically located in the head
It is usually located near the organs for special senses such as vision, hearing,
and olfaction.
It is the most specialized and energy consuming organ in the body, responsible for complex
sensory perception , motor control , endocrine regulation and the development of
intelligence
3. Brain is divided into three divisions:
• THE FOREBRAIN : The largest region of our brain is the
forebrain. The forebrain plays a central role in the
processing of information related to cognitive activites ,
sensory and associative functions, and voluntary motor
activities.
• THE MIDBRAIN : It is the smallest portion of the
brainstem. The midbrain functions as a relay system,
transmitting information necessary for vision and hearing.
It also plays an important role in motor movement , pain ,
and the sleep/wake cycle.
• THE HINDBRAIN : It is the lower part of the brainstem.
The hindbrain coordinates functions that are fundamental
to survival , including respiratory rhythm , motor activity ,
sleep , wakefulness.
