Fertilization occurs in three steps: 1) pollen attaches to the stigma and sends a pollen tube down the style, 2) the pollen tube connects with the ovary, 3) when the pollen tube meets the ovule or egg cell, they join together completing fertilization. Inside a seed there is a coat, embryo, and cotyledon; the coat protects the seed, the embryo is the beginning of a new offspring, and the cotyledon contains stored food. For a seed to germinate and grow into a new plant, it needs water, the right temperature, nutrients, and space.
