WHAT IS STRESS?
According to Selyle, stress is defined as the pressure experienced by a person
in response to life demands. These demands are referred to as stressors and
include a range of life events, physical factors, environment conditions and
personal thoughts.
Cont.
 So basically Stress is simply a reaction to a stimulus that disturb our physical or
mental equilibrium. In the other words, it is an omnipresent part of life.
 A stressful event can trigger the “flight-or-fight” response.
 Stress can lead to negative or counter productive feelings or threaten emotional
well being.
TYPES OF STRESS
 ACUTE STRESS:- this type of stress can be seen commonly in day to day life. In
sports running and doing exercises are considered as an “acute stress”. Horse
riding, riding on a roller-coaster is an example of acute stress. But these stresses
are followed by a pleasant feeling. This kind of stress is very important for games
and sports.
 CHRONIC STRESS:- if a stressful situation over a long period of time, it is called
“chronic stress”. It is just opposite to chronic stress. It affects the performance of a
sportsman, like- memory loss, deteriorated reflexes, psychosomatic disorder,
physiological unbalance, etc.
ACUTE STRESS
 Acute stress disorder is a mental health condition that can occur immediately after
a traumatic event. It can cause a range of psychological symptoms and, without
recognition or treatment, it can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder.
SYMPTOMS OF ACUTE STRESS
 1) INTRUSION SYMPTOMS : These occur when a person is unable to stop
revisiting a traumatic event through flashbacks, memories, or dreams.
 2) NEGATIVE MOOD: A person may experience negative thoughts, sadness, and
low mood.
 3) DISSOCIATIVE SYMPTOMS: These can include an altered sense of reality, a lack
of awareness of the surroundings , and an inability to remember parts of the
traumatic event.
 4) AVOIDANCE SYMPTOMS: People with these symptoms purposefully avoid
thoughts, feelings, people, or places that they associate with the traumatic event.
CHRONIC STRESS
 Short lived feelings of stress are a regular part of daily life. When these
feelings become chronic, or long-lasting , they can severely impact a
person’s health .
SYMPTOMS
 Irritability, which can be extreme
 Fatigue
 Headaches
 Difficulty in sleeping
 Changes in appetite
 Feeling helpless
 Nervousness
 Low self-esteem
STRESS CYCLE
 STRESS CYCLE is the distribution of forces (aka stresses) that change over time in
a repetitive fashion. As an example, consider one of the large wheels used to drive
an aerial lift such as a ski lift. The wire cable wrapped around the wheel exerts a
downward force on the wheel and the drive shaft supporting the wheel. Although
the shaft, wheel, and cable move, the force remains nearly vertical relative to the
ground. Thus a point on the surface of the drive shaft will undergo tension when it
is pointing towards the ground and compression when it is pointing to the sky.
HOW TO REDUCE STRESS
 Stress can be reduced by:-
1) Body relaxation exercise
- breathing techniques
- guided imagery
2) Physical exercise
- Yoga
- work out routine
3) Mediation
4) Counselling
- talk therapy
- life coaching
GOOD STRESS
Eu-Stress is the positive cognitive response to stress that is healthy, or gives positive
feelings.
Slightly more than what one can handle.
For example- winning the lottery, gambling, getting engaged, meeting or engaging in
a challenge, watching a scary movie.
THANK YOU
