II. DEFINITION OF TERMS
A. STREET ART
B. MURAL ART
C. GRAFFITI
D. PUBLIC ART
III. ARTIST INFLUENCES
IV. FUNCTION OF STREET ART
WHEN DOES VANDALISM BECOME
ART?
WHAT IS STREET ART?
• Visual art presented in public settings
• is art created on surfaces in public places like
sidewalks, exterior building walls, and highway
overpasses.
• usually created as a means to convey a
message connected to political ideas, social
commentary, or confrontation
• it contests hypocrisy and inequality in society
as it serves as self-affirmation for artists whose
oeuvre lies outside the traditional scope of
fine art.
Jaune says “The trash man is like a scavenger in our
society. They are cleaning the world but they are
insignificant, invisible.”
HISTORY OF STREET ART
• The desire of people to leave their mark on
walls has been around for thousands of
years. Archaeologists have found graffiti
scratched on walls in the city of Pompeii.
• But in terms of contemporary street art, we
can trace its beginnings to tagging,
scratching initials or a name on public
property, in New York in the late 1960s.
• Graffiti artists of the 1970s and 1980s looked
for new places to make art, reacting and
rebelling against society's rules.
Graffiti on walls of Pompeii reveals that Ancient
Roman householders put graffiti on their walls
when elections are coming up.
HISTORY OF STREET ART
• The work has moved from the
beginnings of graffiti and vandalism to
new modes where artists work to bring
messages, or just simple beauty, to an
audience.
• Street Art is also referred to as Urban
Art or Guerilla Art.
• Street Art such as Graffiti is typically
made and showcased outside of
traditional art settings like galleries and
museums.
Darryl McCray, better known as Cornbread, is the man who
is often credited with being the first graffiti writer,
tagging his name all over North Philadelphia. The story
goes that he started graffiti writing because of a girl he had
a crush on, Cynthia Custuss, which led to him
writing ‘Cornbread Loves Cynthia’ all over the area, then
continuing with his own tag.
-Steve Gray, Widewalls.com
PURPOSE OF STREET ART
• communicate with everyday people. (exposure to all types of
people)
• works that reflect or to raise awareness on social or political
issues; however, subject matter is incredibly varied and diverse.
• "smart vandalism"
• urban space as an untapped format for personal artwork, while
others may appreciate the challenges and risks that are
associated with installing illicit artwork in public places.
• creating art in a format which utilizes public space allows
artists who may otherwise feel disenfranchised to reach a
much broader audience than other styles or galleries would
allow
• a way for disenfranchised groups of citizens to express their
dissatisfaction with society.

STREET ART
• refers to a set of artistic practices produces in public, often urban, settings that are
intended to be seen by the general population and passerby
• Artworks that can be defined as street art when the street and location is central to
the meaning and production of the work and the works therefore make material or
artistic use of the street by its interest in some form of durable aesthetic impact,
discounting temporary performances or installations.
• Can be found on a number of surfaces including walls, pavements roofs, signposts
and powerboxes
• Practices not limited to: murals, graffiti, paste ups, stickers, sculptures, stencils,
mosaics, yardbombing or poetic assaults

BOTH FORMS OF PUBLIC EXPRESSION AREN'T ALWAYS DONE WITH THE PERMISSION OF PROPERTY OWNERS, WHICH BRINGS THE
ISSUE OF VANDALISM INTO THE EQUATION.
BOTH DIFFERS FROM TECHNIQUE, FUNCTION AND INTENT.
STREET ART
• larger goals or intent
• Street artists take the tools and ideas of
graffiti and use them to make art that
sends a message.
• want people to see their work because
their goal is to provoke discussion and
reaction / make a statement
GRAFFITI
• don't intend for the public to understand it,
nor do they care
• directing it to other individuals marking
similar territory or to a specific group of
people.
• guerrilla artwork on inner city walls and train
lines
• Usually personal branding of the writers
GRAFFITI
• Writing or drawings scribbled,
scratched, or sprayed illicitly on a
wall or other surface in a public
space
Defined from Oxford dictionary
Graffiti- word based Street Art- image based

GRAFFITI ART
• Two forms of artistic overlap
• ’Graffiti’ + ‘Art’
• elaborate graffiti that is more
figurative, using images and colors
akin to most street art paintings.
• Elaborate and figurative graffiti
combined with images
Photo from
http://www.columbia.edu/~sl3731/graffitiART/
MURAL ART
• A painting applied to and
made integral with the
surface of a wall or ceiling.
• Does not refer to mosaic
forms part of the overall
scheme of the painting

MEXICAN MURALISM
• Mexico’s political revolt in 1910 that would come to
influence the country’s biggest art movement
• new government sought to establish a brand new
Mexican society founded on its rich tradition but very
much forward-looking.
• Since most of the population was illiterate, an effective way
to change that would be through the creation of visual
messages that would not only appeal aesthetically, but that
would also promote certain ideals.
• form of social realism at its finest.
• portrayed the Aztec warriors battling the Spanish in their
fight for the independence, humble peasants fighting in the
Revolution, common laborers of Mexico City using fresco,
encaustic, mosaic of glass, ceramic and metal, and
sculpture-painting

Diego Rivera
• most traditional artist.
• European Modernism
-elements of Cubism,
later toned down to
recreate the flair of
indigenous murals.
• depicted his people as
noble and glorious,
saluting their history
and heritage and
paying homage to the
hard workers in the
most respectful way
• an extraordinary visual
diary of Mexico in all its
diversity and honesty
Diego Rivera – La historia de México- de la conquista al futuro, 1929-1935. Mural at Palacio Nacional, Ciudad de
México
José Clemente Orozco – Destruction of the Old Order (detail), 1926 at National Preparatory School, Mexico
City
José Clemente Orozo
• European expressionism
• dark prophet, he
emphasized human
suffering and cruelty,
leaving nothing unsaid
when it came to the
horrors of the Mexican
Revolution
• whitewashed by the
government for their
explicitly straight-
forward content
• the fear of mankind’s
ever-growing
dependency on
technology and the
incredible power it will
have over us in the
future.
David Siqueiros – El pueblo a la universidad, la universidad al pueblo, 1952–1956 at National Autonomous University of Mexico
David Siqueiros
• artist incorporated
science, technology and
machinery into his work
while still holding on to
the primary task of
conveying a message to
common people.
• evoked speed and
progress, but also the
kind of political vision
that was not well
received by the
authorities in Mexico, or
the United States –
which is why today most
of his murals can be
found in South America.
PUBLIC ART
• Community or municipal art
• Any work of art which is designed for and
sited in a space accessible to the general
public, from a public square to a wall
inside a building open to public
• Umbrella term which includes any work of
art purchased with public funds, or which
comes into the public domain (by
donation, or by public display, etc.)
irrespecticve of where it is situated in the
community, or who sees it
"Group of Four Trees" by Jean Dubuffet, Chase Plaza, New York, NY
CHARACTERISTICS OF PUBLIC ART
• It is commissioned by a very public process, in which the community has a clear and defined
role in selecting the artist, the site, and the artwork
• Public money funds the creation of the art piece, especially in the case of percent-for-art
ordinances. This arrangement means that the art has many audiences to please, not just the
artist and the selection committee, and that there is a degree of accountability assumed about
the artwork that artists do not encounter as much when creating work for private use or display.
• It is associated with a sense of longevity. Whereas a work of studio art or in a museum
collection may be sold or removed at a predetermined time, a work of public art, is protected by
the Visual Artists Rights Act and must go through an official process (called Deaccession) if it is
to be sold or removed.. It also must be designed to rigorous standards, as it is often expected to
last from 20-50 years, if not more, in an outdoor, fairly unprotected environment.
KINDS OF PUBLIC ART
• Sculpture: in the round, bas relief, kinetic
works (mobiles), electronic works, light
works; figurative, abstract, statuary; formed
from any material that provides the type of
durability required for the project;
• Mosaics including engravings, carvings,
frescoes;
• Fountains or water elements;
• Fine art crafts: clay, fiber (tapestries),
textiles, wood, metal, plastics, stained glass;
• Mixed-media video and computer-
generated works, collage, photography;

KINDS OF PUBLIC ART
• Installations;
• Earthworks and environmental
artworks;
• Decorative, ornamental, or
functional elements designed by
an artist;
• Murals, drawings, and
paintings; and
• Monuments

Street Art

  • 2. OUTLINE I. HISTORY II. DEFINITION OF TERMS A. STREET ART B. MURAL ART C. GRAFFITI D. PUBLIC ART III. ARTIST INFLUENCES IV. FUNCTION OF STREET ART
  • 3. WHEN DOES VANDALISM BECOME ART?
  • 4. WHAT IS STREET ART? • Visual art presented in public settings • is art created on surfaces in public places like sidewalks, exterior building walls, and highway overpasses. • usually created as a means to convey a message connected to political ideas, social commentary, or confrontation • it contests hypocrisy and inequality in society as it serves as self-affirmation for artists whose oeuvre lies outside the traditional scope of fine art. Jaune says “The trash man is like a scavenger in our society. They are cleaning the world but they are insignificant, invisible.”
  • 5. HISTORY OF STREET ART • The desire of people to leave their mark on walls has been around for thousands of years. Archaeologists have found graffiti scratched on walls in the city of Pompeii. • But in terms of contemporary street art, we can trace its beginnings to tagging, scratching initials or a name on public property, in New York in the late 1960s. • Graffiti artists of the 1970s and 1980s looked for new places to make art, reacting and rebelling against society's rules. Graffiti on walls of Pompeii reveals that Ancient Roman householders put graffiti on their walls when elections are coming up.
  • 6. HISTORY OF STREET ART • The work has moved from the beginnings of graffiti and vandalism to new modes where artists work to bring messages, or just simple beauty, to an audience. • Street Art is also referred to as Urban Art or Guerilla Art. • Street Art such as Graffiti is typically made and showcased outside of traditional art settings like galleries and museums. Darryl McCray, better known as Cornbread, is the man who is often credited with being the first graffiti writer, tagging his name all over North Philadelphia. The story goes that he started graffiti writing because of a girl he had a crush on, Cynthia Custuss, which led to him writing ‘Cornbread Loves Cynthia’ all over the area, then continuing with his own tag. -Steve Gray, Widewalls.com
  • 7. PURPOSE OF STREET ART • communicate with everyday people. (exposure to all types of people) • works that reflect or to raise awareness on social or political issues; however, subject matter is incredibly varied and diverse. • "smart vandalism" • urban space as an untapped format for personal artwork, while others may appreciate the challenges and risks that are associated with installing illicit artwork in public places. • creating art in a format which utilizes public space allows artists who may otherwise feel disenfranchised to reach a much broader audience than other styles or galleries would allow • a way for disenfranchised groups of citizens to express their dissatisfaction with society. Source: Banksy
  • 8. STREET ART • refers to a set of artistic practices produces in public, often urban, settings that are intended to be seen by the general population and passerby • Artworks that can be defined as street art when the street and location is central to the meaning and production of the work and the works therefore make material or artistic use of the street by its interest in some form of durable aesthetic impact, discounting temporary performances or installations. • Can be found on a number of surfaces including walls, pavements roofs, signposts and powerboxes • Practices not limited to: murals, graffiti, paste ups, stickers, sculptures, stencils, mosaics, yardbombing or poetic assaults Definition from artofthemooc.org
  • 9. Michael Paderson -questioning the idea of authority Dandelion Void II
  • 12. Shepard Fairey -created posters, stickers and others, supporting Barrack Obama’s candidacy in election for President on 2008. -originally independent, the Obama campaign noticed it through Yosi Sergant, and was able to sell and produce more -helped in the campaign

  • 14. BOTH FORMS OF PUBLIC EXPRESSION AREN'T ALWAYS DONE WITH THE PERMISSION OF PROPERTY OWNERS, WHICH BRINGS THE ISSUE OF VANDALISM INTO THE EQUATION. BOTH DIFFERS FROM TECHNIQUE, FUNCTION AND INTENT. STREET ART • larger goals or intent • Street artists take the tools and ideas of graffiti and use them to make art that sends a message. • want people to see their work because their goal is to provoke discussion and reaction / make a statement GRAFFITI • don't intend for the public to understand it, nor do they care • directing it to other individuals marking similar territory or to a specific group of people. • guerrilla artwork on inner city walls and train lines • Usually personal branding of the writers
  • 15. GRAFFITI • Writing or drawings scribbled, scratched, or sprayed illicitly on a wall or other surface in a public space Defined from Oxford dictionary
  • 16. Graffiti- word based Street Art- image based Photo from http://www.columbia.edu/~sl3731/graffitiART/
  • 17. GRAFFITI ART • Two forms of artistic overlap • ’Graffiti’ + ‘Art’ • elaborate graffiti that is more figurative, using images and colors akin to most street art paintings. • Elaborate and figurative graffiti combined with images Photo from http://www.columbia.edu/~sl3731/graffitiART/
  • 18. MURAL ART • A painting applied to and made integral with the surface of a wall or ceiling. • Does not refer to mosaic forms part of the overall scheme of the painting Definition from Britanica.com Picture from https://www.vanmuralfest.ca/about/
  • 19. MEXICAN MURALISM • Mexico’s political revolt in 1910 that would come to influence the country’s biggest art movement • new government sought to establish a brand new Mexican society founded on its rich tradition but very much forward-looking. • Since most of the population was illiterate, an effective way to change that would be through the creation of visual messages that would not only appeal aesthetically, but that would also promote certain ideals. • form of social realism at its finest. • portrayed the Aztec warriors battling the Spanish in their fight for the independence, humble peasants fighting in the Revolution, common laborers of Mexico City using fresco, encaustic, mosaic of glass, ceramic and metal, and sculpture-painting Photo from Ohio State Univesity Website https://u.osu.edu/krisskarupafinal/revolution-in-art-mexican-muralism/
  • 20.
  • 21. Diego Rivera • most traditional artist. • European Modernism -elements of Cubism, later toned down to recreate the flair of indigenous murals. • depicted his people as noble and glorious, saluting their history and heritage and paying homage to the hard workers in the most respectful way • an extraordinary visual diary of Mexico in all its diversity and honesty Diego Rivera – La historia de México- de la conquista al futuro, 1929-1935. Mural at Palacio Nacional, Ciudad de México
  • 22. José Clemente Orozco – Destruction of the Old Order (detail), 1926 at National Preparatory School, Mexico City José Clemente Orozo • European expressionism • dark prophet, he emphasized human suffering and cruelty, leaving nothing unsaid when it came to the horrors of the Mexican Revolution • whitewashed by the government for their explicitly straight- forward content • the fear of mankind’s ever-growing dependency on technology and the incredible power it will have over us in the future.
  • 23. David Siqueiros – El pueblo a la universidad, la universidad al pueblo, 1952–1956 at National Autonomous University of Mexico David Siqueiros • artist incorporated science, technology and machinery into his work while still holding on to the primary task of conveying a message to common people. • evoked speed and progress, but also the kind of political vision that was not well received by the authorities in Mexico, or the United States – which is why today most of his murals can be found in South America.
  • 24. PUBLIC ART • Community or municipal art • Any work of art which is designed for and sited in a space accessible to the general public, from a public square to a wall inside a building open to public • Umbrella term which includes any work of art purchased with public funds, or which comes into the public domain (by donation, or by public display, etc.) irrespecticve of where it is situated in the community, or who sees it "Group of Four Trees" by Jean Dubuffet, Chase Plaza, New York, NY
  • 25. CHARACTERISTICS OF PUBLIC ART • It is commissioned by a very public process, in which the community has a clear and defined role in selecting the artist, the site, and the artwork • Public money funds the creation of the art piece, especially in the case of percent-for-art ordinances. This arrangement means that the art has many audiences to please, not just the artist and the selection committee, and that there is a degree of accountability assumed about the artwork that artists do not encounter as much when creating work for private use or display. • It is associated with a sense of longevity. Whereas a work of studio art or in a museum collection may be sold or removed at a predetermined time, a work of public art, is protected by the Visual Artists Rights Act and must go through an official process (called Deaccession) if it is to be sold or removed.. It also must be designed to rigorous standards, as it is often expected to last from 20-50 years, if not more, in an outdoor, fairly unprotected environment.
  • 26. KINDS OF PUBLIC ART • Sculpture: in the round, bas relief, kinetic works (mobiles), electronic works, light works; figurative, abstract, statuary; formed from any material that provides the type of durability required for the project; • Mosaics including engravings, carvings, frescoes; • Fountains or water elements; • Fine art crafts: clay, fiber (tapestries), textiles, wood, metal, plastics, stained glass; • Mixed-media video and computer- generated works, collage, photography; The 16th Avenue Titled Steps by Aileen Barr and Colette Crutcher Source: mymodernmet.com
