She put Max on a short leash. Jean gave Max treats when he walked calmly and did not pull. Montel trained his poodle, Frankie, to do tricks. First he taught him to follow simple commands like “sit” and “stay.” Then Montel taught Frankie how to roll over, jump up into his arms, and fetch the newspaper. Dogs like to be rewarded when they do what their owners want them to do. Nice words, a loving pet, and a yummy treat are always great rewards for a hard-working dog.

15. Go Fetch! Cree is at an age when most kids like to spend their free time playing video games or hanging out with their friends. Instead, this fifth grader from Santa Fe, New Mexico, spends three hours each Wednesday afternoon training dogs. Cree is a volunteer at Assistance Dogs. That is one of several programs around the country that train dogs to be the eyes, ears, and hands for some people with disabilities. Cree started volunteering when she was in fourth grade because she loves animals. Dogs in the program learn how to open and shut doors, turn lights on and off, throw away trash, and pick up items for people who are in wheelchairs. Each dog learns a total of 90 commands.
