A compact disc is made of three thin layers - a tough plastic middle layer, with a thin aluminum layer in between and a protective lacquer layer on top. This layered structure makes the disc shiny on one side to reflect a laser that reads the information stored on the disc. Compact discs are commonly used for storing large files like movies, music, games and software by educational institutions, advertisers and musicians due to their mass storage capacity. However, CDs are easily breakable, require a special drive to read and write, and can be expensive.
