Stomata are microscopic pores found in plant leaves and stems that allow for gas exchange. They are surrounded by guard cells that open and close the pores. The student hypothesized that leaves directly exposed to sunlight would have a higher stomata density than shaded leaves. Samples were taken from holly leaves in sunny and shaded areas. Statistical analysis confirmed that sunny leaves had significantly more stomata per area than shaded leaves, supporting the hypothesis.
