2. Step 1
• Identify the verb in the sentence
• Put it on the right side of the horizontal line

3. Step 2
• Identify the simple subject
• Place it on the left side of the horizontal line

4. Step 3
• If the verb is an action verb, look for a direct
object
• If there is a direct object, place it on the
horizontal line after the verb

5. Step 4
• Look for articles (a, an, the) or possessives
(his, her, their, Joe’s, ect.)
• Place the article or possessive on a diagonal
line coming from the noun it describes

6. Step 5
• Look for adjectives
• Place adjectives on a diagonal line coming
from the noun it describes
– There may be more than one diagonal line coming
from nouns

7. Step 6
• Look for adverbs (describing
verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs)
• Place the adverb on a diagonal line from the
word it is modifying
