This class focuses on using the steps of the writing process to create a cohesive essay. The activities
in this course lead to a Final Project due in Unit 9. Because we will work on each step of the writing
process, it is crucial to see the ultimate goal as the Final Project. The Final Project will provide you
with an opportunity to integrate all of the concepts covered in this class. As you read the unit
materials for each week and participate in discussions, keep these issues in mind. The projects will
all be steps in the process, so if you stay on task, you should be well prepared for the Final Project.
Expository essays attempt to educate an audience about a topic and, ultimately, explain ideas they
may not have understood before reading your essay. You can use the expository style for multiple
purposes such as informing, persuading, and explaining. In our course, we will focus on the
informative style of expository writing. To be convincing, essays must be justified by evidence and
be logically sound. Throughout this course, you will learn aspects of effective writing that will be
used in this Final Project.
Your Final Project for this course will be a 3–5 page, double-spaced informative essay. You should
document all sources using APA citation. Units 4 and 5 will discuss this citation style in detail. Your
essay will use a variety of sources and will be based on a topic selected in Unit 1. You will submit an
outline in Unit 4 and a three-page draft of the essay in Unit 7.
Your final paper must be original work written for this class. This means that you must be the
author (turning in a paper written by someone else is plagiarism and will not be tolerated) and you
must not have turned in your Final Paper (or another version of it) for a grade in another class.

Assignment Objectives
Students will complete this assignment by writing an essay that makes an original argument that answers the research question that they have already developed and researched in the previous assignment (which was a Review of Literature). Students’ essays should 1) have a thesis statement 2) support the argument presented in the thesis by synthesizing at least four sources that the student has found and evaluated as credible or otherwise worthy of attention; and 3) summarize, paraphrase, and quote from these sources adequately to complete the task.
Rationale
The simplest explanation of this essay’s purpose is that by completing it, you will write an essay that answers your research question. Ultimately, however, the purpose of this assignment is to enter a scholarly conversation. By applying the skills in research, source evaluation, and synthesis that you have been practicing through the term, you will contribute to an existing conversation by presenting your own original argument. That argument will speak to the existing conversation by using sources to support your argument (either as evidence, by extending or modifying your sources’ arguments, or by refuting sources’ arguments). The most important thing to remember as you work on this essay is that you cannot simply parrot the information or arguments that you find in your sources. Rather, this essay will be driven by your unique argument answering your research question. Your essay must be a persuasive argument that allows you as a young scholar to enter and contribute to the ongoing conversation on your topic.
Assignment
In short, this assignment requires you to write a thesis-driven essay that makes an argument answering your research question that cites at least four sources to support your claims and show your thesis’s relationship to the existing conversation on your topic. Suitable questions might be:
What is the definition of the American Dream?
Is the American Dream positive or negative in its impact on American culture?
Is the American Dream real or just a myth?
Is the American Dream dead or alive?
Only one question should be dealt with in this paper. Any of these questions may be modified as long as they are approved by the instructor in the planning stage.

Review of Literature
The author of “Key ideas in Sociology” (2003), Martin Slattery, describes educational
social inequality as the relationship between highly attained level of education of an individual
with that of the parents. Thomas Abel, who is the author of “cultural capital and social inequality
in health” (2008), describes educational social inequality as the disability of poor parents to pay
higher education for their children. He continues to state that children from poor background
perform poorly or fail to attain higher education because of poor resources attained by the
parents. According to Richard Wilkinson, the author of “The Spirit level: why more equal
societies almost always do better” (2010), states educational social inequality is linked to race
and ethnicity with individuals from particular ethnic minorities who underperform in school in
comparison to people from majority populaces.
Kathryn Neckerman conducted a broad research in her book, “What really causes Social
Inequality” (2004). After the research which basically questioned if the current growth in social
inequality had any connection with the growing differences in domains of community like the
superior neighborhood way of living with family. She noted that educational social inequality
was a result of a rising training level with minimum financial aid on students from poor
background. Daniel Dorling, the author of, “Injustice: Why Social Inequality Persists” (2011),
outlines that educational social inequality is present and persistent because of very limited
resources being shared among too many people. Unfairness of yesterday is today’s inequality
and unfairness of today is inequality of tomorrow (Daniel, 2011). This means according to
Daniel, inequality is a generational issue.

Social inequality in education is different in every country (Slattery, 2003). There is also a
differing effect in every generation when it comes to social inequality says Slattery. In every
country, the parent’s education differs from that of their children (Slattery, 2003). According to
Abel (2008), Social inequality differences come as a result of differing learning structures
worldwide. Abel believes the only difference in education structure is class; rich kids are able to
attain high education, while poor kids only attain minimum education level (Abel, 2008).
Slattery also states that education grows with generation, while Abel, believes education grows
with monetary power.

That argument will speak to the existing conversation by using sources to support your argument (either as evidence, by extending or modifying your sources’ arguments, or by refuting sources’ arguments). The most important thing to remember as you work on this essay is that you cannot simply parrot the information or arguments that you find in your sources. Rather, this essay will be driven by your unique argument answering your research question. Your essay must be a persuasive argument that allows you as a young scholar to enter and contribute to the ongoing conversation on your topic.

In short, this assignment requires you to write a thesis-driven essay that makes an argument answering your research question that cites at least four sources to support your claims and show your thesis’s relationship to the existing conversation on your topic. Suitable questions might be:

Review of Literature
The author of “Key ideas in Sociology” (2003), Martin Slattery, describes educational
social inequality as the relationship between highly attained level of education of an individual
with that of the parents. Thomas Abel, who is the author of “cultural capital and social inequality
in health” (2008), describes educational social inequality as the disability of poor parents to pay
higher education for their children. He continues to state that children from poor background
perform poorly or fail to attain higher education because of poor resources attained by the
parents. According to Richard Wilkinson, the author of “The Spirit level: why more equal
societies almost always do better” (2010), states educational social inequality is linked to race
and ethnicity with individuals from particular ethnic minorities who underperform in school in
comparison to people from majority populaces.
Kathryn Neckerman conducted a broad research in her book, “What really causes Social
Inequality” (2004). After the research which basically questioned if the current growth in social
inequality had any connection with the growing differences in domains of community like the
superior neighborhood way of living with family. She noted that educational social inequality
was a result of a rising training level with minimum financial aid on students from poor
background. Daniel Dorling, the author of, “Injustice: Why Social Inequality Persists” (2011),
outlines that educational social inequality is present and persistent because of very limited
resources being shared among too many people. Unfairness of yesterday is today’s inequality
and unfairness of today is inequality of tomorrow (Daniel, 2011). This means according to
Daniel, inequality is a generational issue.

Social inequality in education is different in every country (Slattery, 2003). There is also a
differing effect in every generation when it comes to social inequality says Slattery. In every
country, the parent’s education differs from that of their children (Slattery, 2003). According to
Abel (2008), Social inequality differences come as a result of differing learning structures
worldwide. Abel believes the only difference in education structure is class; rich kids are able to
attain high education, while poor kids only attain minimum education level (Abel, 2008).
Slattery also states that education grows with generation, while Abel, believes education grows
with monetary power.

She said that she had no recollection of events between the time she entered the store and an hour later, when she was arrested for shoplifting in a nearby department store with a considerable amount of stolen property on her person. She protested her innocence and became so agitated, belligerent, and profane that the arresting officers took her to the hospital for evaluation. At the hospital she reported that two years previously she had been arrested for shoplifting and had had amnesia for the act. The charges against her were then dropped because she explained that both the shoplifting and the amnesia resulted from her forgetting to eat after taking her insulin. Of note, her blood-sugar level on testing in the emergency room was elevated. The patient calmed down appearing asymptomatic after the evaluation and was transferred to jail pending a preliminary hearing. When she learned that her release was planned for the next day and that the charges against her would not be dropped, she became extremely agitated, angry, and abusive to the officers. Shortly thereafter, she complained of a headache and said she had no recollection of her abusive behavior. Later that evening she accosted an officer angrily. When the officer responded and addressed the patient by name, "Naomi," the patient said that her name was "Oprah" and that she would not allow herself to be called "Naomi," whom she described as a "wimp and a loser." "Oprah’s" voice and movement were somewhat different from those of "Naomi." She claimed that she had done the shoplifting and stepped back so that "Naomi" could be caught and humiliated, and that if she had wanted to, she could have evaded detection easily. Boundary Issues
It may not be possible or reasonable for counselors to always avoid dual relationships with clients. For example, counselors who live and work in small rural communities may attend the same religious institutions as their clients, or use the same libraries, doctors, or other services. In these multiple-relationship situations, counselors would not be in violation of ethical standards if they took reasonable steps to protect their objectivity and efficacy, and to avoid possibilities of exploitation or harm.
Counselors and supervisors usually consider dual relationships on a continuum of risk. As you work through the notion of dual relationships, you should consider the relationship with your client and the context of the situation. It is also important to consider the impact of dual roles on the power dynamics of the therapeutic relationship. For example, clients, students, and supervisees have less experience, knowledge, and power compared with licensed counselors and supervisors. Consequently, they are less likely to recognize inappropriate boundary crossings or to express their concerns about these crossings. These excerpts can help when I am doing homework because they can be used as a structure when answering questions for my future homework. In my next homework, I will aim to have more references and actually pinpoint what the answer is because I feel like I do not fully answer the question I only answer it partially. So I can turn in something rather than nothing. It is sometimes difficult to understand the main idea or interpret what some people are saying in the documentaries. Applying Theoretical Interventions for Clients Experiencing Life Transition and Developmental Issues, Part II
Marriage, couple, and family counselors have varying caseloads. What they all have in common is that their group of clients—whether large or small—represents the variety of human experience. Even those counselors with a specific clinical focus see variety in the ways in which specific issues manifest in different relationships. Part of the goal of your counseling program is to expose you to varying scenarios so that when you are faced with differing client situations, you will have the evidence-based research knowledge, flexibility, analytical skills, and theory-integration practice to know the best course of action to take with a particular couple or family.
To prepare for this Application Assignment, select and view one movie from the list provided in this week’s Learning Resources. Begin to conceptualize the couple's or family’s problem through your theoretical orientation and identify interventions that you might use. Finally, begin to locate articles in the Walden Library that could be used to justify the interventions you selected.
