Disruption Set in Motion by Healthcare Consumerism.pdfMindfire LLC
Healthcare consumerism is the health industry’s shift towards a more value based care; it is a movement for a more cost effective and efficient delivery of healthcare services. It connotes the patient taking control of their health and wellness by managing all aspects of one’s healthcare landscape – including health benefits, medical insurance and retail health. In short, the goal of healthcare consumerism is to enable patients to become wholly involved in their healthcare decisions.

Taking the Digital Pulse: Why Healthcare Providers Need an Urgent Digital Che...Capgemini
Digital technologies are altering the very fabric of the traditional healthcare delivery model. Consumers are actively embracing digital tools to take charge of their health.
Consider this: no less than 86% of respondents in a survey reported that they wanted to take a more proactive role in their healthcare decisions, and 76% reported that they have the tools and information to do so. Social media and mobile platforms are becoming increasingly important channels for consumers. A survey found that 45% of respondents search for health information and close to 34% ask for health-related advice on social media. channels. The four million mobile health app downloads that occur every day also give consumers an easy way to track their health.
So how is the healthcare industry responding to these new opportunities? Are the industry and the current healthcare delivery model adapting to changing consumer needs rapidly enough? To obtain a clearer picture of current digital readiness, we conducted a survey of global healthcare players. We also compared the digital maturity of the healthcare industry with that of other industries, based on a previous study conducted jointly with the MIT Center for Digital Business. The results will probably not come as a surprise to many of us.
We found that healthcare is significantly less mature than many industries in the adoption of digital technologies. Our survey also revealed a wide disparity in the digital maturity of healthcare providers. Only 33% were found to be digitally mature or Digirati, while the majority were found to be lagging in the use of digital technologies.

1. I agree that the changes made with CMS (center for Medicare and Medicaid Services) how changed the guidelines for how providers can bill for services. One of the biggest changes was the upgrade of ICD codes which has expanded enormously to be more specific with diagnosis and services to bill for. I work for a program of hospice, called palliative care, and the change over from using ICD9 codes to ICD10 was a very large task that took time to switch over to but I have come to realize that changes in health care are inevitable and to be prepared for things to change constantly. With being a palliative care program I don't think the change was as big of an impact on us like I'm sure it was for a hospital. Our program provides education on disease progress for chronic illnesses such a chronic kidney disease, hypertension, diabetes, cancer, heart disease and so on. The amount of ICD 10 codes we use are minimal compared to what a hospital would see. Nonetheless the codes are way more specific now which can be challenging when trying to narrow down for accuracy.
2. I think training and feedback are two important aspects of implementing electronic medical records. The users are the most important stakeholders and they should be trained properly. Their feedback should be taken seriously as this helps with post implementation changes to the system. No one likes changes but change in any organization is essential. Technology has completely transformed the health care industry and from my experience resistance typically comes from the older generation who doesn't really understand the importance. Most are used to doing things manually. Most organizations are turning to the technology to transform their environment by cutting costs and ensuring that their revenues are coming in timely.

The Internet has been rapidly changing the consumer’s view of medicine. As the use of the Internet for health information becomes more widespread, risk to the overall consumer quality of care increases. There is social concern about the yet-undetermined effects the Internet has had and will continue to have on consumer behaviors and health outcomes. This study examines such behaviors and makes recommendations for the enrichment of future care.
Influencers are key resources in the commercialization of products and companies…
The question is why? The answer is that they have large “NETWORKS” of listeners and other thought leaders who are influenced by them. This means they can rapidly achieve mass diffusion of information; mass product acceptance; and mass product adoption

Medication Compliance and Diabetes Outcomes: Is There a CorrelationDr. Susan Dorfman
The basis of this paper draws on the theory of health production functions and the
hypothesis that each person has control over his or her health outcomes through various
healthcare behavior choices. More specifically, the assumptions in paper were that the outcomes
(output) of diabetes care are determined by a person’s compliance (input) to his or her medication
regiment. One key factor of compliance, as shown in the studies presented herein, are the costs
associated with compliance – primarily the cash payments (co-pays) that patients must pay for
every prescription. Of particular interest is the understanding of the health outputs provided in
the studies presented herein relate to the patient health input, which in this case is noncompliance
due to co-pay, and if and how they can be associated and applied to the production
function.
With the distribution of medical information to over 160 million people in the United States, the Internet has been rapidly changing the consumer’s view of medicine by providing a key opportunity for consumers and patients to become actively involved in the provision of his or her health care.
While the growing availability and use of Internet health information and social networking tools can benefit consumer awareness and participatory medicine, such tools may also expand the chance of consumer health risks associated with misleading information and studies showing that only 1 out of 40 self-diagnosis results in a visit to a physician

Defecation
Normal defecation begins with movement in the left colon, moving stool toward the anus. When stool reaches the rectum, the distention causes relaxation of the internal sphincter and an awareness of the need to defecate. At the time of defecation, the external sphincter relaxes, and abdominal muscles contract, increasing intrarectal pressure and forcing the stool out
The Valsalva maneuver exerts pressure to expel faeces through a voluntary contraction of the abdominal muscles while maintaining forced expiration against a closed airway. Patients with cardiovascular disease, glaucoma, increased intracranial pressure, or a new surgical wound are at greater risk for cardiac dysrhythmias and elevated blood pressure with the Valsalva maneuver and need to avoid straining to pass the stool.
Normal defecation is painless, resulting in passage of soft, formed stool
CONSTIPATION
Constipation is a symptom, not a disease. Improper diet, reduced fluid intake, lack of exercise, and certain medications can cause constipation. For example, patients receiving opiates for pain after surgery often require a stool softener or laxative to prevent constipation. The signs of constipation include infrequent bowel movements (less than every 3 days), difficulty passing stools, excessive straining, inability to defecate at will, and hard feaces
IMPACTION
Fecal impaction results from unrelieved constipation. It is a collection of hardened feces wedged in the rectum that a person cannot expel. In cases of severe impaction the mass extends up into the sigmoid colon.
DIARRHEA
Diarrhea is an increase in the number of stools and the passage of liquid, unformed feces. It is associated with disorders affecting digestion, absorption, and secretion in the GI tract. Intestinal contents pass through the small and large intestine too quickly to allow for the usual absorption of fluid and nutrients. Irritation within the colon results in increased mucus secretion. As a result, feces become watery, and the patient is unable to control the urge to defecate. Normally an anal bag is safe and effective in long-term treatment of patients with fecal incontinence at home, in hospice, or in the hospital. Fecal incontinence is expensive and a potentially dangerous condition in terms of contamination and risk of skin ulceration
HEMORRHOIDS
Hemorrhoids are dilated, engorged veins in the lining of the rectum. They are either external or internal.
FLATULENCE
As gas accumulates in the lumen of the intestines, the bowel wall stretches and distends (flatulence). It is a common cause of abdominal fullness, pain, and cramping. Normally intestinal gas escapes through the mouth (belching) or the anus (passing of flatus)
FECAL INCONTINENCE
Fecal incontinence is the inability to control passage of feces and gas from the anus. Incontinence harms a patient’s body image

Medical Technology Tackles New Health Care Demand - Research Report - March 2...pchutichetpong
M Capital Group (“MCG”) predicts that with, against, despite, and even without the global pandemic, the medical technology (MedTech) industry shows signs of continuous healthy growth, driven by smaller, faster, and cheaper devices, growing demand for home-based applications, technological innovation, strategic acquisitions, investments, and SPAC listings. MCG predicts that this should reflects itself in annual growth of over 6%, well beyond 2028.
According to Chris Mouchabhani, Managing Partner at M Capital Group, “Despite all economic scenarios that one may consider, beyond overall economic shocks, medical technology should remain one of the most promising and robust sectors over the short to medium term and well beyond 2028.”
There is a movement towards home-based care for the elderly, next generation scanning and MRI devices, wearable technology, artificial intelligence incorporation, and online connectivity. Experts also see a focus on predictive, preventive, personalized, participatory, and precision medicine, with rising levels of integration of home care and technological innovation.
The average cost of treatment has been rising across the board, creating additional financial burdens to governments, healthcare providers and insurance companies. According to MCG, cost-per-inpatient-stay in the United States alone rose on average annually by over 13% between 2014 to 2021, leading MedTech to focus research efforts on optimized medical equipment at lower price points, whilst emphasizing portability and ease of use. Namely, 46% of the 1,008 medical technology companies in the 2021 MedTech Innovator (“MTI”) database are focusing on prevention, wellness, detection, or diagnosis, signaling a clear push for preventive care to also tackle costs.
In addition, there has also been a lasting impact on consumer and medical demand for home care, supported by the pandemic. Lockdowns, closure of care facilities, and healthcare systems subjected to capacity pressure, accelerated demand away from traditional inpatient care. Now, outpatient care solutions are driving industry production, with nearly 70% of recent diagnostics start-up companies producing products in areas such as ambulatory clinics, at-home care, and self-administered diagnostics.
