the size of my research paper. I received a B on my final draft; the first passing grade I have ever
received on a research paper. I am very satisfied with my grade. When it came to the essays

and the style in which I need to write it in. There are nine essay writing methods which I learned
while attending this course: exemplification, compare/contrast, cause and effect, proposal,
narration, process, division/classification, definition, and argument. The only problems I
encountered when trying to write the essays that were assigned to me by the instructor was
finding suitable subject matter to write about. Once I found my topics for my essay, everything
else became easier. I would first produce a rough draft and then the students, the instructor, and
myself would go over them in class and decided if what I was writing was in its best form. Most
of my rough drafts needed improvement, but if it didn't it wouldn't be a rough draft, so it was

How My Writing Has Improved
After this semester of English 102, at Bristol Community College I feel that I have gained the
skill to articulate what I want to convey to the reader in many ways. I don't just look at
grammatical error, but instead I look for ways to make my sentences more effective and concise.
Nevertheless, I hope that this strategy will continue to help me improve my writing even further
on in the future. My strong points as a reader have also definitely improved after reading the

expression for me. I find myself to be very soft spoken and speaking verbally is usually difficult

Characterization is the concept of creating characters. Many authors throughout time include
dramatic transformations for their characters in their literature. In A Christmas Carol, Charles
Dickens brilliantly employs characterization within the character Ebenezer Scrooge, who experiences
a truly powerful and life–changing transformation, from a horrid person to one with great
ebullience for life. In Stave 1, Dickens establishes Scrooge's character as an extremely avaricious
person who doesn't encourage the notion of joy. To illustrate, "'If I could work my will,' Scrooge
said indignantly, 'every idiot who goes about with Merry Christmas on his lips, should be boiled
with his own pudding, and buried with a stake of holly through his heart.'" (Dickens, 5) In the

Scrooge persists and persists that he will improve his behavior in this piece of text, "'I am not the

However, if you learn how to use this technique efficiently, you will never have to reread a chapter.

designed for class, but I will tell you a secret or two. Or, should I say, I will allow you to see a small
preview. First, preview the chapter. Look at headings, bold words, captions, pictures and
sub–headings. Then, start with paragraph one. However, don't read with a high–lighter. At the end of
the paragraph, Stop, think about what was just read. Write a question in the margin and underline
the answer in text. Do this for the entire chapter. Like I said, it is very time consuming. Now when
you need to review, cover up the text and say question out loud. Try to answer it without looking at
the underline material. Review after reading the chapter, before classes, and
