Formal Education
Education is very essential in life no matter what age you are. Every day is a new learning
experience, and the possibilities are endless. We are all different people with different mindsets and
life experiences. But, we do not need traditional schooling to further our experiences in education.
We all can learn various things that schooling will not be able to teach. Formaleducation can enforce
freedom, but to a certain extent. Social class and race can shape the education system on very high
grounds. In many ways, social class and race affect the education system. For instance, if one is
African American, they would be judged entirely on the color of their skin rather than their
knowledge. Is that fair? Absolutely not! They get...show more content...
A person is more likely to be more successful in life when attaining a higher degree. They can
pursue a successful career that they are passionate about. Higher education is beneficial because
no matter what you choose to do it will always be there to back you up in the future. Having a
college degree can help you with financial stability as well. But, in today's world, does having a
college degree mean you can get any job at any given place or time? Not always will you find jobs
that need certain degrees to be placed in jobs. Many places prefer no degree than having one. Some
jobs require something even higher. There are a few limitations on having higher education. Also, by
having higher education, it does not necessarily mean a person knows everything. You may have
little to no education and still learn and know more things than someone with higher education can.
For example, in Blue–Collar Brilliance, Mike Rose; Rose's mother had dropped out of school to help
support her family in a diner. She did not need school or a degree to develop psychological skills.
She knew how things worked in a person by socially connecting to them. "Her tip depended on how
well she responded to these needs, and so she became adept at reading social cues and managing
feelings, both the customers' and her own." (Rose). That goes to show that higher education is not
always needed in workplaces that use more connection to humans

Formal Writing History
My history with formal writing: A challenging subject I had been putting off the research paper as
long as I could, now I was in real trouble. The night before the due date and all I had was my name
and four blank pages. The essay was to summarize the life of a famous person in history. The topic
was not the problem; it was my procrastination. I had always been good about getting my homework
done in time except when it came to formal writing. Formal writing has always been hard for me
because of the formatting and citing, I am hoping this class will help me overcome these obstacles
and make writing fun and enjoyable. I will first tell you about my history with formal writing, then I
will talk about using online article databases and googling information. I will then discuss my
experience with sources and quotes, using MLA format and my experience using in–text
parenthetical citations....show more content...
I haven't had to write a lot of papers in my life besides the occasional assignments in middle school
and high school. Back in middle school it was mainly trying to get your handwriting down, creating
rough drafts and then finalizing them in Microsoft Word. I had a few papers to write in high
school but we were given multiple days to research and brainstorm what we wanted to talk about.
This is really the first class I have taken that is dedicated to writing formal essays in a specified
format with topics that are a little more challenging than what I have experienced in the

Leadership Resilience
Overview I thoroughly enjoyed this semester, I felt more comfortable writing papers, typing the
papers in the correct format, and setting up the citations correctly. We covered a wide variety of
information during this course including useful resource tools, websites, writing styles, critical
thinking skills, emotional intelligence, and leadership resilience. I learned something every week
that I can implement not only in my professional life, but in my personal life as well.
Applying What I Learned One of the lessons talked about the importance of saying thank you. I
have always been very consistent about saying thank you in person, but in retrospect, I realized that I
was not always efficient about saying thank you in writing. As...show more content...
I cannot say that I had ever considered my emotional intelligence before this lesson. I gained new
knowledge from the assigned reading, the self–reflection, and Dr. Adler's (2014) YouTube video,
Emotional Intelligence: How Good Leaders Become Great. I watched the video multiple times, and
have applied the knowledge learned from this subject many times in my home and work life. The
lesson over leadership resilience was very helpful. We were able to take a Personal Resilience
Inventory (Allison–Napolitano & Pesut, 2015) to determine our strengths and identify areas which
need improvement. I was classified as a moderately resilient person. As a result of this exercise, I
was able to clearly list areas where I can improve my leadership resilience. This lesson also
provided the insight that resilience can be learned, it is not a finite quality. In Week 11 we
reviewed the government websites, Healthy People 2020 and Rural Healthy People 2020. I had
previous knowledge of Healthy People 2020 but not of Rural Healthy People 2020. These
websites provide a lot of useful resources that will be very beneficial in future classes as well as in
professional practice. I have gone to the websites several times just to explore and learn about all
the information contained. I have bookmarked the websites for my personal use and have shared the
knowledge of these websites with several

Many writers share their experiences about literacy and language. The writer Helen Keller wrote
The Day Language Came into My Life, an essay where she tells the reader her experience with
how she learned how to speak, read and write even though she is blind and deaf. Amy Tan wrote
Mother Tongue, an essay where she talks about the trouble of speaking English as an immigrant in
a new country. Frederick Douglass wrote Learning to Read and Write, an essay where he talks
about becoming literate during a time when slaves were not allowed to read and write. They all talk
about literacy in their own ways, but at some point they all had some similarities in their experiences.

But then, later on, as a result of bad influence from her husband, she became even more violent in her
opposition to his learning to read than her husband himself. He felt that his knowledge only brought
bad things to him and reminded him that he was a slave who could never be anything else in life.
Overcoming this obstacle was one of the biggest challenges that Douglass would have to face.
However, later on, he started making friends with all those he met in the streets of their
neighborhood. He learned lessons and got more knowledge from them and would give bread in
return. He said, "This bread I used to bestow upon the hungry little urchins, who, in return, would
give me that more valuable bread of knowledge" (Douglass 88) He used to read all the readings,
magazines, news papers, and etc. to gain knowledge, he said, "The reading of these documents
enabled me to utter my thoughts" (Douglass 88) However, he wasn't happy to learn literacy and
become educated, because he said, "I would at time feel that learning to read had been a curse
rather than a blessing. It had given me a view of my wretched condition, without the remedy"
(Douglass 89) He saw an enslaved person escape and brought back to his owner again. He knew he
also had to escape but he waited for a safe time to do so, because he was too young to make himself
free and besides, he has to learn how to write. He "Might have occasion to

Final Rationale Analysis
Final Rationale While taking English 1111 I experienced some of the toughest writing
assignments that I have ever done. It was difficult and led to many long nights with a lot sleep
lost. I don't say this in pain misery though, I say this under the idea that I believe in myself more
and my writing skills. You have pissed me off a lot but, you have pushed me more than any other
teacher and I thank you for it.
The most difficult thing I experienced this semester was the interview analysis. This particular
assignment was hard for me because it just didn't seem like I could put my words to ink, I wrote the
paper but it had no meaning. I believe some reasons that I had this problem is because this
assignment is from earlier in the semester and...show more content...
I enjoyed that I could talk to you like a person and that you understand the struggles that I have in
my life. You understand that I have a life and that I just don't go home and do homework. You
know that I have responsibilities in my life. By you having this state of mind, it makes me feel
for comfortable with this class and school. I'm glad talking to you isn't like talking to a robot who
just sends out assignment but, doesn't care about how we get to making this paper. Another thing
that I enjoy is the ability to have originality in my work. Every paper that wrote by everyone has a
story behind it. You let me express myself and give the ability to spread my wings. You don't give
a strict outline of the paper, you let me be me. In conclusion, I had a great time in this class. I have
developed in my writing skills and the confidence I have in my writing abilities; this semester has
taught me some key life skills that go past a simple English but skills that will be applied. You have
given me the ability to question things around and to not settle for someone else's answer. I thank
you again for being my teacher and mentor. I'm going to miss you as my English

English 101 Class Analysis
English 101 is much different than any English class I have ever taken. The theme of the class is
to help you with your overall English skills. It is different for our class because while our class work
is done online, we have the help of an in–class teacher who oversees our work and gives us tips and
advice on how to do some of the work when we have questions.
There have been many different types of essays and papers that we have covered over this semester
long course. This class was the first time I have ever written a blog. I feel the blogs were very good
for us to get a feel of the structure of the class and how to deal with deadlines. I also found it very
helpful doing the blogs at the beginning of the school year for us to get our minds...show more

I use more thought–out and intellectual words and sentence phrasing than I ever have before. I
never felt the work to be too stressful as one may assume college would be. The essays were not
too arduous. The entire writing part of the class was pretty easy due to the sources provided to us
and the information that can gathered from other areas. For me, the only part that can sometimes be
difficult is the technological side but it is very simple to submit your work. If you are already
proficient with technology, you will have no issues. The technological skills you gain in this class
will be extremely helpful in other classes beyond this one. With the advances in technology we
experience every day, it is constantly becoming more prevalent in school work. You need to
know more about technology than just writing papers. You also need to learn different types of
research that is available online and also different types of formatting and writing styles certain
teachers may require. If technology keeps advancing at the rate it is currently, it will be an even
bigger asset to you in your future workplace than in college. The better you become now and over
the next few years, the more prepared you will be when pushed out into the real world. My advice
would be to make sure you stay on top of your work. If there is a project or paper due on Thursday

Essay On Formal Writing
13. When should you write like you talk and when is it best to be more formal?
There are two forms of communication: formal and casual. When writing, you need to know your
audience and select your words carefully. Formal writing is used in professional settings, college
level papers, book reports, writing to an authority's figure, or business to allow you to get your
point across without using offensive words or voice. This type of writing is eloquent with proper
use of grammar and phrases to add credibility to what you are saying. Formal writing should never
use slang or abbreviated words. Formal writing is extremely important to allow the writer to create a
business presentation or formal business letter that sounds educated and...show more content...
Although, as in formal writing, you cannot always use the same simple words. The use of big
words gives ones writing more punch and helps the reader to improve their vocabulary. It is very
important when using big words that they are used appropriately and do not change the content of
what is being written. A writer needs to use caution when picking big words. If the reader has
trouble understanding the words used then what the writer is trying to say gets lost. Some may
also say that using big words makes the writer look pompous. There is a very fine line between
using the precise word, and using a word that sounds important. It is more important to select the
precise word to describe a situation, than to settle on another word that just doesn't convey the same
feeling. As Mark Twain once said, "The difference between the almost right word and the right word
is really a large matter – it's the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning." 15. Why is
the "you–viewpoint" important and why should you avoid using the "you–viewpoint"
manipulatively?
The you–viewpoint helps the writer grab the reader's attention and bases its points on the reader's
interest. The writer needs to concentrate on what the reader needs versus what you want from the
reader. This type of writing strengthens the writer's persuasiveness. Youneed

Introduction
Hello,
My name is Lily Chhun, I am a first year undergraduate student, currently attending UC Merced, and
majoring in psychology while also planning on minoring in English as well.
As I reflect on my time at UC Merced, by far, I have come at a realization that as my first year as
an undergraduate student I have had the greatest opportunity to learn about what it like to live the
college life. As a student at UC Merced I have gained many experiences academically and socially, I
have also gained the opportunity in meeting new people and making new friend. During my time in
Writing 001, also known as my Academic Writing course,...show more content...
It was my first writing class as a college freshmen and I did not know what to expect, like whether or
not the class would be harder compared to what I took in high school or even if I would enjoy taking
class. But as soon as day one turned in into week one, than soon week fifteen I felt more
comfortable in the class than what I have probably felt in the beginning. I felt like I could write
anything my professor threw at me, because through writing I could express my individuality. It
gives me the freedom to express myself through words, and write about things I felt passionate
about writing about. I felt as though I writing because I wanted to, and less because I was assigned
to do so.
Although, I did struggle with analyzing my work in the past and Writing 001 kind of builds on that
factor when it comes to discussing about readings and writing an essay that involves analyzing a
quote. Analyzing work has never been my strong point and it has always been a challenging factor
throughout my high school career. But I believe that have improved on in this area during my first
semester. From the comments I have been given by my professor and peers, my analytic work has
gradually grown

English Comp 1 Reflection
Improving English Comp 1 was an eye opening experience. The course was emotionally and
physically draining, but I strongly believe it prepared me for Comp 2. Learning and improving
are a few of the rewards I received through hard work and dedication during the course.
Throughout English comp 1, I discovered my biggest weakness. I improved some of my various
difficulties, and I achieved a rewarding high point. During the course of English Comp 1, I
discovered my ultimate weakness: commas. Before I took the course, I did not realize how
horrendous I was with punctuation in general, but more specifically, commas. After Mrs. Menetre
graded my first paper, it soon became obvious that I needed to learn a great deal about commas in a
short amount...show more content...
In my opinion, the biggest high point I had during the class was making a ninety six on one of my
final drafts. The paper where we had to write about world events during our lifetime is the one that I
scored a ninety–six. It was the highest grade I had throughout the entire year and one of very few
happy moments I had while taking the class. Receiving a high "A" on a paper was very relieving,
because it was proof that all of my hard work and stress was being rewarded. It is important to have
high points and to recognize the high points in order to achieve

Many places prefer no degree than having one. Some jobs require something even higher. There are a few limitations on having higher education. Also, by having higher education, it does not necessarily mean a person knows everything. You may have little to no education and still learn and know more things than someone with higher education can. For example, in Blue–Collar Brilliance, Mike Rose; Rose's mother had dropped out of school to help support her family in a diner. She did not need school or a degree to develop psychological skills. She knew how things worked in a person by socially connecting to them. "Her tip depended on how well she responded to these needs, and so she became adept at reading social cues and managing feelings, both the customers' and her own." (Rose). That goes to show that higher education is not always needed in workplaces that use more connection to humans Get more content on HelpWriting.net

I learned something every week that I can implement not only in my professional life, but in my personal life as well. Applying What I Learned One of the lessons talked about the importance of saying thank you. I have always been very consistent about saying thank you in person, but in retrospect, I realized that I was not always efficient about saying thank you in writing. As...show more content... I cannot say that I had ever considered my emotional intelligence before this lesson. I gained new knowledge from the assigned reading, the self–reflection, and Dr. Adler's (2014) YouTube video, Emotional Intelligence: How Good Leaders Become Great. I watched the video multiple times, and have applied the knowledge learned from this subject many times in my home and work life. The lesson over leadership resilience was very helpful. We were able to take a Personal Resilience Inventory (Allison–Napolitano & Pesut, 2015) to determine our strengths and identify areas which need improvement. I was classified as a moderately resilient person. As a result of this exercise, I was able to clearly list areas where I can improve my leadership resilience. This lesson also provided the insight that resilience can be learned, it is not a finite quality. In Week 11 we reviewed the government websites, Healthy People 2020 and Rural Healthy People 2020. I had previous knowledge of Healthy People 2020 but not of Rural Healthy People 2020. These websites provide a lot of useful resources that will be very beneficial in future classes as well as in professional practice. I have gone to the websites several times just to explore and learn about all the information contained. I have bookmarked the websites for my personal use and have shared the knowledge of these websites with several Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Formal English Essay Binita Guchait Saha Prof. Isaac Eng 14 25 November 2012 Many writers share their experiences about literacy and language. The writer Helen Keller wrote The Day Language Came into My Life, an essay where she tells the reader her experience with how she learned how to speak, read and write even though she is blind and deaf. Amy Tan wrote Mother Tongue, an essay where she talks about the trouble of speaking English as an immigrant in a new country. Frederick Douglass wrote Learning to Read and Write, an essay where he talks about becoming literate during a time when slaves were not allowed to read and write. They all talk about literacy in their own ways, but at some point they all had some similarities in their experiences. ...show more content... But then, later on, as a result of bad influence from her husband, she became even more violent in her opposition to his learning to read than her husband himself. He felt that his knowledge only brought bad things to him and reminded him that he was a slave who could never be anything else in life. Overcoming this obstacle was one of the biggest challenges that Douglass would have to face. However, later on, he started making friends with all those he met in the streets of their neighborhood. He learned lessons and got more knowledge from them and would give bread in return. He said, "This bread I used to bestow upon the hungry little urchins, who, in return, would give me that more valuable bread of knowledge" (Douglass 88) He used to read all the readings, magazines, news papers, and etc. to gain knowledge, he said, "The reading of these documents enabled me to utter my thoughts" (Douglass 88) However, he wasn't happy to learn literacy and become educated, because he said, "I would at time feel that learning to read had been a curse rather than a blessing. It had given me a view of my wretched condition, without the remedy" (Douglass 89) He saw an enslaved person escape and brought back to his owner again. He knew he also had to escape but he waited for a safe time to do so, because he was too young to make himself free and besides, he has to learn how to write. • 5. Final Rationale Analysis Final Rationale While taking English 1111 I experienced some of the toughest writing assignments that I have ever done. It was difficult and led to many long nights with a lot sleep lost. I don't say this in pain misery though, I say this under the idea that I believe in myself more and my writing skills. You have pissed me off a lot but, you have pushed me more than any other teacher and I thank you for it. The most difficult thing I experienced this semester was the interview analysis. This particular assignment was hard for me because it just didn't seem like I could put my words to ink, I wrote the paper but it had no meaning. I believe some reasons that I had this problem is because this assignment is from earlier in the semester and...show more content... I enjoyed that I could talk to you like a person and that you understand the struggles that I have in my life. You understand that I have a life and that I just don't go home and do homework. You know that I have responsibilities in my life. By you having this state of mind, it makes me feel for comfortable with this class and school. I'm glad talking to you isn't like talking to a robot who just sends out assignment but, doesn't care about how we get to making this paper. Another thing that I enjoy is the ability to have originality in my work. Every paper that wrote by everyone has a story behind it. You let me express myself and give the ability to spread my wings. You don't give a strict outline of the paper, you let me be me. In conclusion, I had a great time in this class. I have developed in my writing skills and the confidence I have in my writing abilities; this semester has taught me some key life skills that go past a simple English but skills that will be applied. You have given me the ability to question things around and to not settle for someone else's answer. I thank you again for being my teacher and mentor. • 6. English 101 Class Analysis English 101 is much different than any English class I have ever taken. The theme of the class is to help you with your overall English skills. It is different for our class because while our class work is done online, we have the help of an in–class teacher who oversees our work and gives us tips and advice on how to do some of the work when we have questions. There have been many different types of essays and papers that we have covered over this semester long course. This class was the first time I have ever written a blog. I feel the blogs were very good for us to get a feel of the structure of the class and how to deal with deadlines. I also found it very helpful doing the blogs at the beginning of the school year for us to get our minds...show more content... I use more thought–out and intellectual words and sentence phrasing than I ever have before. I never felt the work to be too stressful as one may assume college would be. The essays were not too arduous. The entire writing part of the class was pretty easy due to the sources provided to us and the information that can gathered from other areas. For me, the only part that can sometimes be difficult is the technological side but it is very simple to submit your work. If you are already proficient with technology, you will have no issues. The technological skills you gain in this class will be extremely helpful in other classes beyond this one. With the advances in technology we experience every day, it is constantly becoming more prevalent in school work. You need to know more about technology than just writing papers. You also need to learn different types of research that is available online and also different types of formatting and writing styles certain teachers may require. If technology keeps advancing at the rate it is currently, it will be an even bigger asset to you in your future workplace than in college. The better you become now and over the next few years, the more prepared you will be when pushed out into the real world. My advice would be to make sure you stay on top of your work. • 7. Essay On Formal Writing 13. When should you write like you talk and when is it best to be more formal? There are two forms of communication: formal and casual. When writing, you need to know your audience and select your words carefully. Formal writing is used in professional settings, college level papers, book reports, writing to an authority's figure, or business to allow you to get your point across without using offensive words or voice. This type of writing is eloquent with proper use of grammar and phrases to add credibility to what you are saying. Formal writing should never use slang or abbreviated words. Formal writing is extremely important to allow the writer to create a business presentation or formal business letter that sounds educated and...show more content... Although, as in formal writing, you cannot always use the same simple words. The use of big words gives ones writing more punch and helps the reader to improve their vocabulary. It is very important when using big words that they are used appropriately and do not change the content of what is being written. A writer needs to use caution when picking big words. If the reader has trouble understanding the words used then what the writer is trying to say gets lost. Some may also say that using big words makes the writer look pompous. There is a very fine line between using the precise word, and using a word that sounds important. It is more important to select the precise word to describe a situation, than to settle on another word that just doesn't convey the same feeling. As Mark Twain once said, "The difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a large matter – it's the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning." 15. Why is the "you–viewpoint" important and why should you avoid using the "you–viewpoint" manipulatively? The you–viewpoint helps the writer grab the reader's attention and bases its points on the reader's interest. The writer needs to concentrate on what the reader needs versus what you want from the reader. This type of writing strengthens the writer's persuasiveness. Rhetoric: Lessons Learned Lily Chhun MENU SKIP TO CONTENT HOME COLLABORATION CRAFT PROCESS RESEARCH ETHICS RHETORIC SAMPLE PAGE Introduction Hello, My name is Lily Chhun, I am a first year undergraduate student, currently attending UC Merced, and majoring in psychology while also planning on minoring in English as well. As I reflect on my time at UC Merced, by far, I have come at a realization that as my first year as an undergraduate student I have had the greatest opportunity to learn about what it like to live the college life. As a student at UC Merced I have gained many experiences academically and socially, I have also gained the opportunity in meeting new people and making new friend. During my time in Writing 001, also known as my Academic Writing course,...show more content... It was my first writing class as a college freshmen and I did not know what to expect, like whether or not the class would be harder compared to what I took in high school or even if I would enjoy taking class. But as soon as day one turned in into week one, than soon week fifteen I felt more comfortable in the class than what I have probably felt in the beginning. I felt like I could write anything my professor threw at me, because through writing I could express my individuality. It gives me the freedom to express myself through words, and write about things I felt passionate about writing about. I felt as though I writing because I wanted to, and less because I was assigned to do so. Although, I did struggle with analyzing my work in the past and Writing 001 kind of builds on that factor when it comes to discussing about readings and writing an essay that involves analyzing a quote. Analyzing work has never been my strong point and it has always been a challenging factor throughout my high school career. But I believe that have improved on in this area during my first semester. From the comments I have been given by my professor and peers, my analytic work has gradually grown Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. English Comp 1 Reflection Improving English Comp 1 was an eye opening experience. The course was emotionally and physically draining, but I strongly believe it prepared me for Comp 2. Learning and improving are a few of the rewards I received through hard work and dedication during the course. Throughout English comp 1, I discovered my biggest weakness. I improved some of my various difficulties, and I achieved a rewarding high point. During the course of English Comp 1, I discovered my ultimate weakness: commas. Before I took the course, I did not realize how horrendous I was with punctuation in general, but more specifically, commas. After Mrs. Menetre graded my first paper, it soon became obvious that I needed to learn a great deal about commas in a short amount...show more content... The paper where we had to write about world events during our lifetime is the one that I scored a ninety–six.
