- Focus upon the SingStar game as a facilitator for a range of social arrangements that could not be observed ‘in game’ but rather across a far broader range of experiences and engagements.
- Political issue of understanding how games such as singstar and other mixed reality participatory games contribute to the development of key social and cultural skills. In the UK these skills are bemoaned as being absent in high school, college and university students yet these games encourage and even require these skills to be successful players of the game.
- Academic and public discourses on gaming what have tended to focus upon such issues as addiction, isolation and impaired social skills (Yates and Littleton 1999). Contemporary gaming research now shows that gamers of such environments are actually incredibly social beings who see collaboration and socialisation as a necessary and integral part of game play (Chen 2005; Smith 2006). Equally importantly in its presentation the game provides a ‘safe’ version of karaoke isolating a specific nexus of technologies for console and home consumption. However, by referencing this platform it presents a potentially impoverished experience that requires the introduction of additional technologies by the players themselves in order for it to ‘work’.
