Economic Alliance of Greater Baltimore Mission Overview • 25-person executive mission representing Business, Government and Higher Education in Greater Baltimore – Including EAGB Board Members as well as the State of Maryland, Howard County and Baltimore City • Group visits with 24 different companies and organizations over 2 days – Including major employers, research institutes, universities, incubators, accelerators, tech companies and VC firms • 5 networking events that fostered new connections and partnerships – CA & MD-based cyber security / biohealth companies, economic development organizations, West Coast Cyber Hive, thought leaders

A Model for Training Heros A Model for Training Professionals BAE Systems • A strategic investment focused on modernizing their workforce and increasing their competitiveness by: – Creating a partnership w/ each business area to identify, develop and deliver training – Providing access to certifications needed for compliance with gov’t standards (DoD 8570) • Need for university came from desire to go from a ‘culture of heroes’ to a ‘culture of professionals’ – Market pressures require higher performance with lower cost – Employees’ #1 request was for more access to quality training Intelligence & Security (I&S) Internal University

Instructor Expert Group Communities Instructor Led Training Community Competency Area How Does it Work? Communities of Practice • Each College contains several training tracks called competency areas (CA) • Each CA provides Instructor Led Training (ILT) and Expert Group Communities (EG) – Employee-led – Topics are selected based on participant interest/need – Trainings are 1 hour in duration – Projects are several months in duration – Most events are recorded to capture the shared knowledge

Economic Alliance of Greater Baltimore BAE Systems Most Active Communities • Cyber and Information Assurance – Meets weekly to discuss and demonstrate offensive and defensive cyber techniques – 42 EG events in 2013 • Agile Systems Engineering – Meets bi-weekly to discuss advances in Agile development techniques, solution architecting, defense-in-depth architecting, and secure solution architecting – 22 EG events in 2013 • Engineering Proposal Development – Meets bi-weekly to discuss proposal management, effective writing and graphics and basis of estimate development – 24 EG events in 2013 • Engineering Leadership and Management – Meets bi-weekly to discuss technical management, facilitation and presentation, and effective leadership techniques – 24 EG events in 2013

About CONNECT • Assisted in the formation and development of more than 3,000 companies • Unique culture of collaboration between industry, capital sources, professional service providers and research organizations • Originally founded as a part of the University of California (UC) in 1985, spun-out of UC San Diego in 2005 to better serve the research community

Economic Alliance of Greater Baltimore San Diego Ecosystem • Foster supportive, collaborative network – break down the silos and work together • Highly interactive relationship with the start up community • Large businesses work on the same team – Many support start ups/local businesses through in-house offices at incubators i.e. Qualcomm Labs at EvoNexus or CISCO • The CONNECT Program has a large group of experienced entrepreneurs who mentor – ALL are volunteers putting a lot time towards entrepreneurship without being compensated for it a great example of the large sense of community within San Diego

Economic Alliance of Greater Baltimore Next Steps • Continued momentum to seek out best practices and innovation focused opportunities and smaller regional executive missions – Planned tour of incubator in DC – Meeting with Qualcomm’s Division Director in DC to learn about current projects and how they work with their network of partners to foster entrepreneurship and enrich teaching and learning – Connect EdTechMD and to Qualcomm’s Wireless Reach Program – Connections to for Greater Baltimore start ups based on the company’s focus

Economic Alliance of Greater Baltimore Next Steps • Established connections with BioMed Ventures, the in-house venture arm of BioMed Realty, who have been looking to make a trip to Baltimore to meet with Pharma/BioTech companies at and and elsewhere in the region • Potential partnership opportunity to create a CONNECT East or a Cyber CONNECT – the program is already based in 50 markets around the world • Connected to bwtech; they are now working to plan a CyberTini together prior to CyberMaryland Conference on Oct. 28th • Establish connections for Kyocera to the new Johns Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute • Future partnership/real estate opportunities among delegates inspired by some of our Mission visits
