Mesrop Mashtots was a 5th century Armenian monk and scholar who is credited with creating the Armenian alphabet. He grew up in a noble family and received a good education, learning Greek and Persian. As a royal secretary, he wrote documents in those languages. He later became a monk and spent years in prayer and study. Around 405 AD, with the support of Catholicos Sahak and Prince Shampith, Mesrop traveled throughout Armenia preaching and converting people, but faced difficulties as the Armenians did not have their own alphabet.
