Peer Observation Document
Observer: Stephen Greiner
Host Teacher: Mohamed
Point of Focus:
(e.g. subject area, stream,
pedagogical approach) Arabic Language Literacy Centers
Classroom: 2D Class: 2D Date: March 12, 2013
1. In regards to your point of focus, list three things that you’ve observed that you believe you can apply
(with or without modifications) in your own classroom. Explain why you think these things will benefit
your students.
1) Mohamed had one center where students rolled a dice with different Arabic letterson it. The students
then had to write words that either started or contained the letter that they rolled. I believe I could
modify this activity and have students use the dice with English letters. They would roll the dice and have
to write words off the word wall that contained that particular letter.
2) There were also students using the computer as a listening center in Mohamed’s class. There were two
computers and students either listened to stories or played literacy games on them. I have one computer
that I use as a center but I would like to ask the administration to distribute more of the older computers
so that we can use three or four computers in each room to use as a center activity for the students.
3) I also saw a variety of differentiation occurring in Mohamed’s classroom. Students in the lower and
higher groups were involved in centersthat were appropriate for their learning needs. For example,
some of the lower students were writing their letters or were trying to put letterstogether to form a
word with the aid of a picture. Yet the higher students were writing words with certain lettersor
answering detailed questions about a book. These sort of activities encourage me to continue to think of
new ways to differentiating the centers that I have.
2. List one modification to the lesson that you would apply to better meet the needs of the students. Why
do you believe this change would enhance the students’ learning experience?
1) I think the students would benefit from having one center where Mohamed is more directly involved with
the students and are focusing on a specific Arabic learning outcome. For example, if the students are
learning about descriptive words (adjectives) Mohamed could have a center where students practice
writing using more adjectives in their sentences. With the low students he could help them by giving them a
sentence starter and have them add adjectives to the sentence. Withhigher students he could give them
some adjectives and discuss their meaning before giving them a writing prompt in which they would have to
use those adjectives in a couple of sentences to describe certain things.

3. What aspects of the classroom environment and resources do you think positively impact the learning
experience of the students? List other things that you would add to the classroom environment and explain
why they would be a beneficial addition for the students and/or teacher.
I believe that having the computer centers in Mohamed room positively impacted the learning experience of
the students. The boys at the computers were completely engaged in what they were learning and were
having fun. That was exciting to see. I’m not completely sure what would be a beneficial addition to
Mohamed’s room since all of the things he had up were in Arabic, which I cannot read. Nevertheless I would
encourage him to update his word wall as new learning outcomes are achieved and even have a large Arabic
alphabet strip up for the lower students to reference.
4. Use the space below to note additional feedback for the observed teacher or to add comments regarding
your experience during the peer observation.
I would like to thank Mohamed for letting me come and see his Arabic literacy centers. It is exciting to see an
Arabic teacher embrace the New School Model and be willing to share his ideas with others even if it is in
another language.
