This was the lecture given by Liu Xun in Beijing Language and Culture University. Based on his experiences in teaching Chinese and academic studies as well, he talked about the characteristics of Mandarin Chinese and how to teach Chinese as a foreign language.

Based on defining and classifying metonymy f rom t he perspective of concept ual mappings and cognitive

In t he field of text ual linguistics and Engilsh2Chinese Const rastive st udy ,it is generally agreed t hat
parataxis ,as opposed to hypotaxis ,is an important subject ,and alse t he most important feat ure distinguish2
ing t he Chinese language f rom English. The aut hor believes t he difference of Chinese paratactic prominence
and English hypotactic prominence not only appears linguistically but also reflect s deep cult ural origin and
eternal causes.

English is subject2predicate language while Chinese is topic prominent one. Translation f rom English
into Chinese often involves t he t ransfer of subject2predicate st ruct ure into topic2comment st ruct ure. As t he
topic plays an important role in Chinese text ,t his paper discusses some aspect s in t his area and argues t hat
proper use of t he topic in t ranslation can render t he version more coherent .
