Audiences and Institutions - DARK KNIGHT CASE STUDYShaun Grimsley
The Dark Knight (Christopher Nolan, 2008) was financed and produced by Legendary Pictures and Warner Brothers. It was the sequel to the highly successful Batman Begins and featured Batman joining forces with District Attorney Harvey Dent to take on the psychotic criminal known as The Joker, played by Heath Ledger. The Dark Knight was a major commercial success, grossing over $1 billion worldwide and becoming the highest grossing film of 2008.
The document analyzes several film posters and identifies effective design techniques. It notes that posters for "Blue is the Warmest Colour" and "First Girl I Loved" use bright, eye-catching colors that relate to the title and emphasize the subjects' lips and hair to suggest a romantic relationship. The "Erin Brockovich" poster features Julia Roberts prominently but lacks a release date. "Lion" relies on famous actors' names rather than vibrant colors. "Cyberbully" clearly communicates its internet-focused theme through a light blue background and title in a digital font. Effective techniques highlighted include coordinating colors, centering eye-catching primary images, using quotes and slogans, and
The document discusses ideas for creating a Saul Bass-inspired poster for the student's film "Loving You". It analyzes posters Bass created for films like "Saint Joan", "Back to the Future", and "Her" focusing on effective design elements. The student considers two ideas for their poster - featuring a woman's neck and shoulders with a cloud background, or featuring keys as female symbols representing the film's same-sex relationship theme. Based on feedback, the student chooses the first idea and may incorporate aspects of the second. A pink base color is selected to convey the film's themes of passion and romance.
Saul Bass was an American graphic designer famous for his film title sequences and logos. He used simple geometric shapes that had symbolic meaning related to the film. For the title sequence of Anatomy of a Murder, he depicted a dead body to represent the crime genre, and used two contrasting typefaces - one messy and warped, and one official-looking - to represent the killer and investigators. The title sequence for The Man With The Golden Arm used spiny cutout lines to symbolize veins and syringes, indicating the film was about drug use.
Saul Bass was an American graphic designer famous for his film title sequences and logo designs from the 1950s-1970s. He is known for using simple, geometric shapes and a dominant central image to deliver powerful messages. His title sequences captured the essence of films through minimalist imagery rather than photographs. Bass hand-drew many elements to create a casual yet sophisticated style. He revolutionized title sequences by using them to visually summarize films through metaphorical stories. Bass' work spanned decades and influenced many other designers.

Here are a few key points about representation in The Dark Knight:
- Male characters like Batman and Harvey Dent are portrayed as strong, powerful, intelligent and in positions of authority. Their masculinity is exaggerated.
- Female characters like Rachel are often sexualized and objectified. Rachel is depicted as needing to be rescued and is tempted by multiple men.
- Elderly characters take on wise but less dominant roles. Youth are more easily manipulated. Children are shown as helpless victims.
- Villains like the Joker and Two-Face have physical disabilities/deformities and are depicted as insane and unaccepted by society.
- Ethnic groups like Russians, Italians and Black people are associated more with crimin

3. Saul Bass
(1920.5.8-1996.4.25)
Saul Bass
Introduction
4. Philosophy

Saul Bass

Logo Design
11. Impression
12. Impression
