Anime has its origins in Japan in the early 20th century and became more prominent internationally starting in the 1970s-1980s. It encompasses a wide range of genres and styles, from movies to television series. Traditional animation techniques were used originally, but digital computer animation is now common. Anime has had influence on mainstream animated films from Disney and Pixar as well.
