The exhibit highlighted special collections from the Kelvin Smith Library at Case Western Reserve University, including rare books from the Kelmscott Press with original woodcuts and bindings. It also featured examples of book preservation work, such as rebinding a 1757 book. The bookplate collection contained over 5,000 examples documenting the history of book ownership. Other special collections included the papers of T. Keith Glennan, artifacts from Western Reserve College, and additional rare items.

Books
Of note among the several
examples of rare book
preservation work on display
was a 1757 edition of John
Dyer’s poetical work The
Fleece.
Work on this volume, which
arrived in Preservation
unbound, involved designing
a new period quarter binding
cover using marbled paper
and leather.

5. . Bookplate Collection Ex Libris Julian Marshall
Special Collections has, over
time, become the beneficiary of
donations from several local
bookplate collectors. Begun in
1917 with the Lemperly collection
and continuing to this day as a
record of our institutional ex
libris, the Bookplate Collection
consists of over 5,000 examples
of the art of the bookplate, used
in the study of the history of book
ownership.

T. Keith Glennan Primary Sources
• T. Keith Glennan, fourth president of
Case Institute of Technology (1947-
1966), was named the first
Administrator of the new National
Aeronautics and Space Administration
in 1958
• CWRU Archives houses the T. Keith
Glennan Papers and many other records
documenting his life and work.
• Glennan supported the new field of the
History of Science and Technology and
supported the creation of the Case
Archive of Contemporary Science and
Technology, founded in 1963 by CIT
Professor Robert Schofield and now
housed in Special Collections

7. Western Reserve College Library
Western Reserve College (WRC), was
founded in Hudson Ohio in 1826, and
WRC trustees appointed the first college
librarian, William Hanford that same
year.
Items on display included the Catalogue
of the Library in Western Reserve
College. 1850, as well as 19th century
texts heavily annotated in students’
hand.
