Recent years have seen a growing interest in variety of evolution topics, as witnessed by the growing number of publications dedicated to the subject. Without attempting to be complete, in this talk we provide an overview of emerging trends in software evolution research, such as extension of the traditional boundaries of software, growing attention for social and socio-technical aspects of software development processes, and interdisciplinary research applying research techniques from other research areas to study software evolution, and software evolution research techniques to other research areas. As a large body of software evolution research is empirical in nature, we are confronted by important challenges pertaining to reproducibility of the research, and its generalizability.

GenOrganizations and development teams are moving beyond waterfall models to those embracing a continuous delivery/DevOps-style set of processes. The deployment of doing tens, hundreds, or even thousands of deploys per day as 'normal' does not align to the SDLC, separation of duties, and common controls expected by auditors. In this presentation, we will describe what auditors look for in a compliance audit, how to develop alternate control procedures that fulfill those reporting requirements, how to avoid “red flags” that indicate inadequate controls, and real world case studies and reporting artifacts. Gene Kim has been studying high performing IT organizations since 1999 and helped develop the SOX scoping guidelines with the Institute of Internal Auditors in 2005. James DeLuccia IV is the leader for the Ernst & Young Americas Certification Services, James oversees all of the audits against common industry standards, and champions several global program implementation roll-outs. Developing and 'translating' the control environment behaviors of clients, such as Google, Amazon, Workday, and others is difficult. This discussion will bridge the needs of auditors with the community of developers by sharing examples, discussing the assurance expectations, and how to communicate to pass an audit.

What does this mean in practice? Organizationally, it means small teams with well-defined areas of responsibility, directly aligned with the business. The teams are cross-functional, meaning that each team has all the skill sets it requires to do its job, while at the same time relying on other teams for supporting services, tools, and libraries. Process-wise, it means doubling down on practices like test-driven development and continuous delivery. Using continuous delivery practices, high-performing teams can and do release their applications and services multiple times a day. This enables them to iterate rapidly, experiment courageously, and fail more quickly. Culturally, it means end-to-end ownership. Each team owns its software end-to-end, from design to development to deployment to retirement. The same engineers who are responsible for the features are responsible for quality, performance, operations, and maintenance. This ownership puts incentives in the right place to encourage building maintainable, observable, and operable systems from the start. All these techniques and approaches are available to everyone, and practical examples in this talk will help other organizations on their journey.

In the talk we will go through different approaches to the data pipelines: from a simple in-house built, with comparison to open source solutions based on Apache stack(Apache Kafka, Apache Samza, Spark) and finally hosted auto-scaling solutions based Amazon(S3, Kinesis, Lambda, EMR) or Google(Pub/Sub, Dataflow, BigQuery). The talk covers the main aspects of data collecting processes altogether with further implications for data processing, highlighting appropriate solutions and architectures for the particular use-cases.
