Kelly was the only female finalist in the Toastmasters
2014 World Champion of Public Speaking
competition, and also the only American, male or
female, to place in the coveted top three! If this had
been the Olympics, she would have been the only
female medalist.
Kelly is a veteran of the United States Army where
she became certified as an Administration Specialist.
She has 30 years’experience in Administration and
currently works full time as a Certified Compliance
and Ethics professional for an oil and engineering
company. She is also a part-time Communications
Coach; she helps others transform their speaking
and presentation skills.
Kelly is frequently invited to speak on Leadership, Overcoming Obstacles, Empowering Women,
and Setting Goals. She is inspired by her God-given talent of communicating and connecting
with people. Kelly consistently delivers with impact leaving her spectators uplifted, intellectually
stimulated, and emotionally triggered. Her audience often describes her as“motivating and
entertaining.”
In her spare time she speaks for non-profit organizations as a Motivational Speaker at emergency
shelters, transitional housing, and half-way houses across the city of Houston.
District 13 Toastmasters
Welcomes 2nd Runner-Up

District 13 | 2016 Spring Conference4
Josué Batista, DTM
District 13 Director
District Director Welcome
Fellow Toastmasters and Friends,
Welcome to our 2016 Spring Conference and Bon Mardi Gras! If you
are reading this message, most likely you are already here, at the Em-
bassy Suites Pittsburgh International Airport, feeling the electrifying
excitement surrounding the most colorful conference ever! A very
passionate group of volunteers led by our Program Quality Director,
Dr. Hollis R. Batista, and our wonderful Conference Chair Claudette
Biers, has been working together on this conference with so much
enthusiasm, energy, and creativity to ensure you are engaged in
learning, enjoying, and meeting other passionate Toastmasters along
the way.
Growing up in southern Venezuela, in my hometown of Ciudad
Bolívar, there was such a fascinating mixture of people, cultures,
languages, food, and music. Caribbean Calypso music played every-
where during the Mardi Gras celebrations, called Carnival there. If you
were to walk along the Paseo Orinoco, a boulevard along the Orinoco
River during Carnival, you would have experienced a sensory over-
load of color, rhythm, drums, and steel band sounds. Catchy songs in
Patois, Spanish, and English, would have invited you to join everyone
in dancing, singing, and celebrating each other. Our district conference is filled with all that colorful excitement! As Dr.
Ralph Smedley said, "... we learn best in moments of enjoyment."
You made the choice to attend this conference and I thank you for trusting our team to make your time and presence
here the very best opportunity to enhance your leadership and communication skills. Our VIP Guest Speaker, Kelly
Sargeant, will deliver powerful and motivational speeches. Our workshop presenters are prepared and ready to deliver
relevant and valuable information for you to use and apply right away. Should I mention we also have speech contests
to enhance the excitement and enjoyment of all of us? All the very best to all contestants; you are examples of what our
theme is about: The WOW Factor - Wonderful Opportunities Within Toastmasters.
If there is one thing I would like for you to take away from this conference it is that Toastmasters International is here to
benefit you, that is right, YOU! Whether you are one of the volunteers putting time and effort supporting this event, or
leading your club, or serving in a district leader capacity, each one of these roles exists to enhance YOUR ability to be a
better leader and communicator. No other institution that I know cares that much about YOUR journey, YOUR why, YOUR
goals. I encourage you to be an ACTIVE participant if you want to accelerate and enhance your progress as a Toastmaster.
I have a challenge for you. On the next speaking slot available at your club, deliver at least one speech about what you
saw, heard, felt, and did during this conference. Make the very best of this conference, be present, be engaged, reach out
to others, and enhance your network by meeting other Toastmasters.
Salut!
Josué R. Batista, DTM
District Director District 13
P.S. If we have not met in person before or if you are a first time attendee, find me, reach out, and say Bon Mardi Gras! In
return, I will have a small keepsake token for you. Until then, au revoir!

Kelly Sargeant gives an inspirational ad-
dress about discovering who you become,
in the process of reaching your goals and
objectives through leadership.
Kelly draws upon her feelings of facing her
fears, the process of being transformed by
leading, and eventually living without fear
– but with purpose. Her testament helps
listeners realize the importance of acknowl-
edging the roadblocks to their dreams,
taking ownership of their issues by taking
full responsibility, solving them, and suc-
ceeding.
This keynote speech will inspire the audi-
ence to be open to growth by showing
them how to use leadership to instill cour-
age, confidence, and credibility in them-
selves.

The Number One Reason You Don’t Have Millennials . . .
How do we convince the Millennial to come to Toastmasters?
How do we reach into a community that has never opened a
phone book, hasn’t looked at a bulletin board since 2nd grade,
and doesn’t know the value of leadership to a newly launched
career? District 10 has found a tool that Millennials use and it’s
paying off. Join Kim as she talks about MeetUp the Millennials.
About Kim
Kim Krajci, DTM, plays well with words. As a professional writer,
social media marketer, public speaker, and podcaster, she
uses words to shape ideas. She publishes blogs and produces
podcasts, including her own On the Table-Topics for Toastmasters
(http://onthetablepodcasts.com/) and Toastmasters101 (http://

Kim lives with her husband and family in Ohio in a household
that is slowly reducing in size as the kids head off to their own
adventures.

Are you missing out on opportunities? Are you struggling to
achieve your education awards? Are you feeling frustrated at
the jumble of materials lying hidden in the corner? You could
be a distracted Toastmaster. Shawndra shares the strategies,
tools, and habits she’s used to become and stay an organized
Toastmaster.
About Shawndra
Shawndra Holmberg, ACB, ALB, believes in the power that an
organized space, schedule, and life has on our creative spirit. She
is a Certified Professional Organizer in Chronic Disorganization
(CPO-CD). Shawndra is focused on being a personal trainer for
productivity, a mentor for goals, and a motivational force for
creativity which is why she embraces Toastmasters.
Shawndra considers herself a lousy tourist as she usually spends
her vacations enjoying a good book (reading one or writing one) and sipping a tasty cup of coffee on her
lanai, deck, porch, or sunroom. That’s why she prefers to live and work in interesting locales. She went
to graduate school in Montana, worked on Johnston Island (~850 miles southwest of Hawaii) for several
years, spent a year at the South Pole, Antarctica, and then thawed out in Hawaii where she joined her
first Toastmaster club. She is currently enjoying the people and scenery of Western Pennsylvania and is a
member of the Earlybirds Toastmaster Club in Butler and the Mercer County Toastmasters.

Do you want to feel happier, healthier, or more productive?
Cracking the code on healthy lifestyle may seem challenging, but
there is a simple solution. In this program, you will learn how to
take charge of your diet, increase your energy, get restful sleep,
as well as strengthen your heart, body, and mind. When you take
care of yourself from the inside out, success will manifest itself
outwardly in everything else you do. The Simple Solution is not a
quick fix, but a lifestyle. No matter where you are on your journey
to a better life, there is something in this workshop for you.
About Vanessa
Vanessa Matthews, ACS, ALB, is the least likely person to be
speaking to you about healthy lifestyle, because she grew up
obese and sedentary, until she took a stand and turned her
life around, losing 75lbs in only 8 months. She earned her
Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of
Pittsburgh, and now dedicates her life to helping others change their lives through better health. Today she
is the owner of Fulfitment Personal Training, LLC, and is changing lives through fitness programs, nutritional
coaching, and public speaking.

Michael’s workshop will review the High Performance
Leadership project for first timers. If you are unsure of how to
proceed, what project to tackle, or who to enlist for help, this
workshop is for you. When youleave this workshop, you’ll be
ready to go back to your club and get started. Bring your HPL
manuals with you as we review:
What makes a good High Performance Leadership Project?
What should I consider when picking my Guidance Committee
members and my Action Team? What is the process of
EXPERIENCING the High Performance Leadership Project?

Oftentimes famous people are considered Life Changers. Today,
Patti will demonstrate that YOU are a Life Changer. Through
a fun time of sharing, you will create your“I”story (personal
Toastmasters testimony) and collect others’“I”stories. Patti will
demonstrate how these stories encourage existing members to
stretch and non-members to join. Learn how to use these stories
on club websites and social media—you never know who may
be looking for a change.
About Patti
Patti Thor, DTM, joined Penn State Pingers in 2011 and the
Nittany Club in 2015. She’s been an Immediate Past President,
VP Education, past Area Governor, Club Mentor, and VP Public
Relations.
Starting her Presidency at nine members, the club dropped to
five active members. Thor and her team implemented her Life Changer program and achieved President’s
Distinguished. Patti wants to share her insight and enthusiasm to show how“You are a Life Changer”so your
club will finish strong too.

VicePresidentandGeneralManagerofWPXI-TVtoreceive2016Communication
AchievementAward
PITTSBURGH, PA, March 19, 2016 — Ray Carter, of Pine Township,
has been selected as this year’s recipient of the District 13 Toastmasters
Communication Achievement Award. This award is given to a
distinguished individual in communication or leadership. As Vice
President and General Manager of WPXI-TV, Ray has the distinction of
earning this award for the impact his communication and leadership
skills have had on our community.
Just as Toastmasters practice and develop their skills to prepare
themselves to become effective leaders and communicators, Ray’s
prior experience prepared him well for his current role as Vice
President and General Manager at WPXI-TV. Ray has been involved in leadership of television stations since
1986. He has worked in several newsrooms as a photographer, editor, writer producer, reporter and anchor.
Before becoming a general manager, Ray spent fifteen years working as a News Director of local news
operations in media markets ranging from small towns like Binghamton, NY to large cities like Atlanta, GA.
Ray is active in the leadership of the television industry. He is a former member of the NBC Television Affiliate
Advisory Board, and currently sits on the executive board of the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters.
Ray is also active in his community and church. He currently serves on the advisory board of Bethlehem
Haven, The Cox Media Group Diversity and Inclusion Initiative, the Pennsylvania Economy League, and is
Vice Chairman of the St. Barnabas CEO Leadership Conference. He is also a lay minister for his church, with
executive and ecclesiastical responsibilities for eight separate congregations, including more than 2,000
congregants.
The presentation of the 2016 Communication Achievement Award will happen on April 23, 2016 at the
District 13 Toastmasters Spring Conference. The 2016 conference will be held at the Embassy Suites in
Coraopolis, PA. Accompanied by his wife, Cathy, Ray will be“delighted to accept”the award as he shares his
thoughts on what it takes to be a great communicator.
Ray and his wife, Cathy, are the parents of four children. He enjoys travel, photography, and riding his
mint-condition Harley Davidson Rocker on weekends. Late at night and every chance he gets, he works on
unfinished writing projects, including a novel and a screenplay.

  • 4. 4 District 13 | 2016 Spring Conference4 Josué Batista, DTM District 13 Director District Director Welcome Fellow Toastmasters and Friends, Welcome to our 2016 Spring Conference and Bon Mardi Gras! If you are reading this message, most likely you are already here, at the Em- bassy Suites Pittsburgh International Airport, feeling the electrifying excitement surrounding the most colorful conference ever! A very passionate group of volunteers led by our Program Quality Director, Dr. Hollis R. Batista, and our wonderful Conference Chair Claudette Biers, has been working together on this conference with so much enthusiasm, energy, and creativity to ensure you are engaged in learning, enjoying, and meeting other passionate Toastmasters along the way. Growing up in southern Venezuela, in my hometown of Ciudad Bolívar, there was such a fascinating mixture of people, cultures, languages, food, and music. Caribbean Calypso music played every- where during the Mardi Gras celebrations, called Carnival there. If you were to walk along the Paseo Orinoco, a boulevard along the Orinoco River during Carnival, you would have experienced a sensory over- load of color, rhythm, drums, and steel band sounds. Catchy songs in Patois, Spanish, and English, would have invited you to join everyone in dancing, singing, and celebrating each other. Our district conference is filled with all that colorful excitement! As Dr. Ralph Smedley said, "... we learn best in moments of enjoyment." You made the choice to attend this conference and I thank you for trusting our team to make your time and presence here the very best opportunity to enhance your leadership and communication skills. Our VIP Guest Speaker, Kelly Sargeant, will deliver powerful and motivational speeches. Our workshop presenters are prepared and ready to deliver relevant and valuable information for you to use and apply right away. Should I mention we also have speech contests to enhance the excitement and enjoyment of all of us? All the very best to all contestants; you are examples of what our theme is about: The WOW Factor - Wonderful Opportunities Within Toastmasters. If there is one thing I would like for you to take away from this conference it is that Toastmasters International is here to benefit you, that is right, YOU! Whether you are one of the volunteers putting time and effort supporting this event, or leading your club, or serving in a district leader capacity, each one of these roles exists to enhance YOUR ability to be a better leader and communicator. No other institution that I know cares that much about YOUR journey, YOUR why, YOUR goals. I encourage you to be an ACTIVE participant if you want to accelerate and enhance your progress as a Toastmaster. I have a challenge for you. On the next speaking slot available at your club, deliver at least one speech about what you saw, heard, felt, and did during this conference. Make the very best of this conference, be present, be engaged, reach out to others, and enhance your network by meeting other Toastmasters. Salut! Josué R. Batista, DTM District Director District 13 P.S. If we have not met in person before or if you are a first time attendee, find me, reach out, and say Bon Mardi Gras! In return, I will have a small keepsake token for you. Until then, au revoir! Spring Conference 2016 - program v2.indd 4 4/19/16 10:52 PM

Kelly draws upon her feelings of facing her fears, the process of being transformed by leading, and eventually living without fear – but with purpose. How do we reach into a community that has never opened a phone book, hasn’t looked at a bulletin board since 2nd grade, and doesn’t know the value of leadership to a newly launched career? District 10 has found a tool that Millennials use and it’s paying off. Join Kim as she talks about MeetUp the Millennials. About Kim Kim Krajci, DTM, plays well with words. As a professional writer, social media marketer, public speaker, and podcaster, she uses words to shape ideas. She publishes blogs and produces podcasts, including her own On the Table-Topics for Toastmasters (http://onthetablepodcasts.com/) and Toastmasters101 (http:// toastmasters101.net). That’s why she prefers to live and work in interesting locales. She went to graduate school in Montana, worked on Johnston Island (~850 miles southwest of Hawaii) for several years, spent a year at the South Pole, Antarctica, and then thawed out in Hawaii where she joined her first Toastmaster club.
