Welcome to the 2016 SUNYCDO Annual Conference! This year marks SUNYCDO’s 40th Anniversary
and we are kicking off our Ruby Jubilee with our conference theme: The Path to Oz. Be inspired by
the Scarecrow and learn from some of the best in our field at our Keynote Presentations and General
Session Workshops. Be inspired by the Lion and find the courage to try something new: learn about the
latest career service products from our vendors or commit to implementing one of the best practices
showcased during our Awards Program. Be inspired by the Tin Man and find the heart to connect with
colleagues from across the state - some of the best ideas are generated from the informal conversations
you’ll have during networking times.
For the past year it has been a privilege to serve as your President. As a Board, and as an Organization,
we have taken the time to reflect on where we have been. We have made a conscious effort to stay true
to the intent of our Organization’s Founders while still pushing boundaries to ensure our relevancy to our
members, SUNY System and ultimately, to our students. This was accomplished through the strategic
planning process that occurred over 18 months and resulted in a new Mission & Vision Statement, a
five year strategic plan, and recommendations to develop and implement annual operational plans.
Our organization represents over 190 career professionals and I was pleased that many came forward
to volunteer their time and talent to the strategic planning process and many more members provided
input and feedback along the way. Members, this is truly your Organization and the direction we’re
heading is exciting.
So as I hand the reins over to the extremely capable and talented Holly Horn, I’m kicking off these worn
shoes and snatching up a pair of ruby slippers because: There’s no place like home . . . And no place
like SUNYCDO!

Tin Man’s Track
Helping students,

find inspiration or passion
in their work.
At past SUNYCDO Conferences we have broken sessions down into tracks by target audience
(Career Counselors, Employer Relations, Directors, and Employers). This year we created tracks
that were more open and inclusive to all members and offered tracks based off of content rather than
audiences. For employers looking to build relationships with college’s sessions in Dorothy’s track may
be helpful, for Career Counselors looking to help students identify their career goals and passions a
session in the lion’s track may be a better fit

This March SUNYCDO lost one of its own with the passing of Richard
(Dick) Schmonsky. Dick, an Emeritus Member of SUNYCDO, was the
Director of Counseling and Advising at Columbia – Greene Community
College for over 30 years. During this time he was active in SUNYCDO
and served as President from 1996-1997.
The proceeds of this year’s SUNYCDO Raffle will be donated in
Dick’s memory to Latin U College Access.
Latino U College Access helps first generation Latino students achieve
their goals. Their mission is to empower youth to enroll and graduate
from college and with this opportunity, better position themselves for
a more promising future. Through advocacy, community education
and student workshops, Latino U promotes college enrollment and
prepares students for their journey to college graduation.
Dick Schmonsky was a lifelong educator committed to student success.
Your generous support of this year’s raffle will honor his work in career
services, his dedication to SUNYCDO and the friendships he made
with many of us.

Education Abroad and Your Career
Lion
Dorothy was unexpectedly thrown into Oz by a tornado. She had to learn how to adapt, navigate, and
excel in this new world. College students have similar experiences as they adapt to their new college
setting. Add in a study abroad program, and they may become overwhelmed with how to process
and explain their life-changing experience. As career counselors, in collaboration with study abroad
advisors, we need to help students be proactive about the experiences they will gain abroad and how
it will help their future career. This session is focused primarily on how to advise students who will or
have studied abroad. Resources will be provided as well.

You’ve Always had the Power…You Just Had to Learn It For Yourself
Tin Man
The main topic of this forum is to provide a fresh look at how career professionals may aspire to ex-
plore and reinvigorate passion and inspiration in their daily experiences. Strategies such as intrinsic
motivation, student empowerment, and fostering a relationship with employers by building inspiring
in-roads are just some of interventions that will be discussed but from a theoretical lens that are often
overlooked by the career professional. The goal is to consider empowerment driven vehicles and the
modification of forgotten and existing approaches that can positively impact stakeholder engagement
and ultimately the increase in employability of students (specifically those at risk of academic failure)
using career services. The format will be high energy, lecture based, and very interactive with the
audience.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
- To learn how students may rekindle, re-acquire, or experience passion in their educational
experiences.
- To learn how to effectively create an atmosphere conducive to inspiring those we aim to serve.
- To explore how empowerment based approaches can positively impact a students’ ability to
autonomously find their inspiration.

Life Preservers for the Yellow Brick Road

Everyone is familiar with the yellow brick road and the journey that Dorothy and her friends take to
Oz. There were many obstacles that the group encountered on their way to Oz. Similarly, there are
multiple challenges that pop up during our career journey. As we think about our professional jour-
neys, whether it be our first year or ten years down the road, we need to remember our life preservers
- Brain, Heart, and Courage. In this presentation, both presenters will discuss the Brain, Heart and
Courage and how these tools will help you to professionally develop during your first years in the pro-
fessional world, as well as how important these traits are to hold onto throughout your career journey.

Finding the Courage to be Vulnerable Can Make You a Better Career Counselor and Leader
Lion
All the Cowardly Lion ever wanted was to be courageous in the face of adversity, but he was con-
stantly afraid. How can you be both? How can we let our students understand that it’s possible to be
both? Miriam Webster defines courage as the “mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and
withstand danger, fear, or difficulty.” Nowhere in that definition does it say that we can’t be afraid. It
simply says that we need to do whatever we’re afraid of anyway. This presentation will guide partici-
pants through the literature that explains how necessary it is to be vulnerable in order to be an effec-
tive leader and to truly connect with students in a meaningful way. It will include interactive activities
and audience participation, including sharing of examples from our own lives and student interactions.
