The use of the child soldiers by armed groups is a persistent problem in the Philippines. The UN reports armed groups operating in the Philippines particularly New People’s Army (NPA), Abu Sayyaf, Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF), ISIS ,Moro National Liberation Front(MNLF) and Moro Islamic Liberation Front(MILF) continue to recruit and use children for combatant and non-combatant roles. this is supported by the The US State Department in its recent Trafficking Report 2017 said armed conflict and reports of recruitment of child soldier by armed group in Mindanao are still ongoing.
“Abuses and injustices committed by the Philippine Military and other government-supported armed group ignited the children’s desire to avenge injustices or defend their communities by joining opposing team
Considering the vulnerability of Filipino youth to the overtures of armed groups amidst the climate of political repression and assaults on human rights, it is time for the government to consider granting children and youth the political space to address this
As global cultural forms, sports are easily taught to people in most setting. Sports for Development and Peace projects that are centered on peace building tend to view sport as instrument in building positive socio-cultural and political characteristics that may be helpful in context to end those conflicts. It is understood as effective way as “breaking the ice” between those who have been in conflict. Sports provide a playful, competitive, rule-governed context for relations to be built with one and another
2.. According to Wilfred Lemke, a special adviser to the UN secretary general on Sports for Development and Peace, “Sports is the most unifying tool in the world” Sports and physical activity not only helps improved individual health and well- being, but also empower individual both important values and social skills. Sports unite and inspires people collectively which build friendship in the community
Our government rendered various efforts to end the conflict between the MILF, MNLF and NPA through peace talks. However, the existence of armed conflict is still evident, thus failed to promote peace. The current President Rodrigo Duterte is openly supportive to the peace talks with these revolutionary groups. He approves the BBL for them to achieve their cause and hopeful to achieve the lasting peace among the Moro people and the Philippine Government.
Looking through these efforts, hearing the clamors of MNLF and MILF for self-determination, and seeing the youths giving up their life, enlighten my vision to help achieve peace for my country. Thus, it gave me an idea to use my expertise in sports manangemnt in the pursuit of peace thru the non-violent way of war. Thus, spearheading the Sports for Peace Project. Consequently, the University administration is ever supportive for this noble and inspiring work.
The problem of recruitment of child soldier has been long existent in the Philippines, This crisis does not only require government interventions but also calls for immediate and strong constructive engagement from various societies and the people. Mindanao State University, the only public university of the region through the Office of Physical Education, Sports and Cultural Affairs(OPESCA) spearheaded the Sports for Peace project that aims to provide former child soldier and adult in the conflict areas the opportunity to play and interact with other tri-young people in order to promote peace and solidarity while establishing the basic foundation of the sports core values; teamwork, discipline and sportsmanship which are the keys to develop a culture of peace.

Conduct of Sports for Peace Day
Participants
Tri-Young People- the tri-young people represent three categories of youth defined according to their religious views and socio-cultural ethnic affiliation.
1. Settlers- a group of youth that belongs to the Roman Catholic faith whose parents migrated in the area for so many years.
2. Moro- belongs to the tribe of Maguindanon. A muslim minority group originated in the area. In this project, some of the moro youths were the children of combatants
3. Indigenous People- a group of youth that came from the native tribes of B’laan and T’boli.
The presence of armed groups is the most challenging one.
(MNLF and MILF) - they are former child soldiers and youth. Before the signing of Peace Agreement between Philippine Government and MILF, these groups of people are called Mujahidin (Islamic Freedom Fighters) who defended their land and aims to established Islamic State in the area. They lived in the mountains and forest. As young as a child, their rights to play are already taken from them. Before the peace talks, they carry guns instead of balls and pens.
The Picture
Former child soldier giving his message of gratitute to the organizer as this is his first experience to engage in playing. His life before was spent in the mountain, chasing enemies and running for his life.
Bcoz of this project, he and the rest of his company experice for the the first time to play with children and youth in their community.
As a teacher, we always in the battlefield of war,
But, instead of guns and tank,
Be bring whistles and balls,
Added with sacks of perseverance,
And tons of patience and determination,
Finally we could end this war
In the future, we give hope to our children
No bombs, ….no guns, …..no evacuation…
That earth is the best place to live in!
Thank you
