This document outlines a lesson plan for teaching students about spoken word poetry. The lesson includes reading and analyzing Daniel Beaty's poem "Knock Knock" to understand elements like volume, eye contact and facial expressions. Students will then do a popcorn performance where they each say one line of a poem incorporating these elements. Finally, the teacher will discuss different types of spoken word poems like duets and back-and-forths as an introduction to an upcoming student assignment to write and perform their own spoken word poem.

Teaching English to Arabic Speakers: Cultural and Linguistic Considerations
In the past few years, more Arabic speakers have come to Canada to learn English than ever before. The workshop aims to present cultural and linguistic information that is useful to English teachers of native Arabic-speaking learners. Participants will learn how to anticipate challenges with regards to teaching grammar, pronunciation, literacy, and critical thinking skills to native Arabic speakers.
Language Transfer: An Interlanguage Strategy by Primary School English Learne...AJHSSR Journal
ABSTRACT: English a second language for most people of the world, has increasingly become the
international language for business and commerce Science and technology and International relations and
diplomacy. In Kenya the importance of English as a medium of instruction goes way back to the colonial
period.Even though English has been accorded a prestigious position of being the official language and
language of instruction learners take time to learn it. The learners construct a personal linguistic system in the
interim time which is different from the first language and also target language called interlanguage. This paper
examines language transfer as an interlanguage strategy employed by primary school pupils in MirigaMieru
West Division, Meru County. The study employed descriptive survey method of research. The target population
comprised of class five pupils. Standard five was targeted because they are in their second year in upper primary
and being in their early years of acquiring English, the pupils use it more in their interaction with and in writing
of essays. At this level English is also used as a medium of instruction and used in the learning of other subjects.
Data was analyzed within the tenets of interlanguage theory. The study established that in the process of
learning English pupils transferred linguistic structures from their first language which is Kiementi to English.
The study recommends that English teachers should give clearer explanations of English grammar rules and
second language learners should be guided in extensive reading as extensive reading exposes learners to correct
grammatical structures. The study contributes to the scholarly, literature on interlanguage of second language
English learners. The findings are also useful to the teachers, pupils and to curriculum developers of language in
designing learning materials
Pronunciation is the bridge between you and a native English speaker. It is the first thing that anyone notices about you, when you start to speak. It connects you. Without clear pronunciation, messages can get lost or confused. The listener might even start to feel frustrated because they don't understand what is being said.

2. Spoken Word Types 2
Overview
In this lesson, we will discuss the nonverbal cues of a speech and a spoken
word poem and go over the different types of spoken word poems. We will
also discuss their project.
Objectives
CCSS.ELA.LITERACY.RL.7.7- Compare and contrast a written story, drama, or
poem to its audio, filmed, staged, or multimedia version, analyzing the effects
of techniques unique to each medium.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.7.6- Adapt speech to a variety of contexts and tasks,
demonstrating command of formal English when indicated or appropriate.
Activities
1. Bellwork: What is Spoken Word Poetry and how is it different from
regular poetry?
2. We will read Daniel Beaty’s Knock Knock to introduce themselves to
the poem.
3. We will watch Daniel Beaty’s “Knock, Knock” spoken word poem and
write down notes of volume, eye contact, facial expressions,
movement on their poem.
4. We will write down everything they noticed about the performance
on the Smartboard and discuss how those elements impact the
performance.
5. We will do a Popcorn Performance: Students will be the prompt of life
in a math class. They will write three lines about their life in a math
class. One at a time, they will stand up say one line they wrote,
incorporating the nonverbal elements we noticed in ‘Knock, Knock’.
This will go on until each person has said all three lines.
6. I will talk to the students about their upcoming Spoken Word
assignment. In that assignment, they are to write a Spoken Word
poem and then perform at our class poetry read.
7. Upon learning about the assignment, I will talk to them about the
different types of poems they can do, showing a Youtube video
example of one of the poems (Duet poem) , and demonstrating the
other with a student (Back and Forth).
Adaptations
The written poem could be translated into the language of my English
Language Learners. If there is a student with a speech impediment, then they
can have the option to say 1-2 lines during the Popcorn Performance. Those
who have trouble seeing the board may sit closer to the front and receive
printed notes of the notes taken about the videos.
Materials
‘Knock, Knock video’
‘Sons’ Video.
3. Spoken Word Types 3
Evaluation
They will write down on a piece of paper the name of one type of Spoken
Word poem we talked about (Knock, Knock would be considered a solo) and
describe what it is.
