The Spokane Tribe originally lived on and protected over three million acres along the Spokane River in Washington. They fished the river and gathered at Spokane Falls. The tribe was split into the Upper, Middle, and Lower Spokane bands who lived in seasonal camps. In 1881, President Rutherford B. Hayes established by executive order the smaller Spokane Indian Reservation, splitting up the Spokane bands and relocating some to the Coeur d'Alene, Flathead, and Colville reservations.
