Purposes

Material description
The system is made up of :
• Two probes and one sampling cabinet. Probes
needs to be installed in the chimney nearest to the
extracting point.
• One transfer line
• One conditioning cabinet suited closely from the
analysis unit
Sampling
The sampling is done via two water cooled probes
associated to a sampling cabinet. This cabinet consist of
two filters and their control units.
Gas samples have high dust densities, and a high temp.
Transfer
Gas samples transfer from sampling cabinet to analysis
unit is done via a heating and lagged link.
Conditioning - Analysis
Before the gas sample introduction in the analysis system,
it is filtered and conditioned inside a cabinet including a
dryer, a pressure regulation module and a fine filter.
The analysis step is done with a set of classical machines
or with a mass spectrometer.

System description
This system allow the measurement of diameter and
ovalization of a circular product directly over two
perpendicular axis.
The technology uses a double VLD laser reverb in parallel
beams over 2 axis. The measurement is carried out by
quantifying the shade on a CCD sensor.
The system allow the detection of short defects (cut ) of a
minimum length of 3.3 mm.

• 1 laser head (class 2) mounted into an IP65 chassis with integrated processor

The laser head is mounted on a online/offline cart to
help for system maintenance. There is also a settings
system to ensure position of the head compared with
product.

Optical and laser are mounted in a robust box, with removable
protection against water splash ensuring high precision measurement,
a good repeatabilityand optimal stability even in harsh environment.
The communication is made by a Ethernet network link allowing long
distances between the computer and measuring head.

Edges tears and holes detector (ETHD)
History
In the iron and steel industries, for cold rolling mill, cleaning and coating processes it is essential to
avoid strip breaks, which implied stops of production, expenses of cleaning and repairing. Based on
this remark, Spie Est introduce for the international market, a special fully automatic machine able to
improve the productivity, to save time and finally to earn money.
The Spie Est ETHD system is an optical non-contact inspection machine. It is used to detect edge
tears and holes on cold strips in various cold processes. This system is able in real-time to give
defects severity levels and to reduce strip translation speed avoiding thus strip breaks. Five
installations are already in production use, and others are in our projects thumbnail.

Defects classification
The classification of defects severity level is only possible
based on the experience of specialists.
The interview of such experts led to the definition of a
certain number of severity levels and circumstances
leading to the attribution of each of these levels. All these
data are synthesized in databases (mainly depending on
strips thickness).
Data processing
The central host unit is generally placed into a cooled
data-processing bay.
ETHD is connected to process managing devices
(calculator, vax…) and drives optional outputs able to
reduce or to stop strip movement. It can be connected
via TCP/IP network, to several low level host
computers allowing operators consultations (HMI).
Cameras
Cameras are compact line scan imager with 1024 pixels
resolution, 14 x 14 µm² pixels area, up to 36000 lines
per second.
They are available with standard objectives as C-mount
and are 50 x 50 x 88 mm, < 300 g.
A statistical study has made it possible to establish an optimal representative database of limited size.
The fully automatic classification procedure is made using current defects specifications impacted by
its neighborhood. The used method is the k nearest neighbors method.
The method is simple, requires little calculation time and gives results immediately intuitive for the
operator. They are not requiring special operator knowledge or specific interpretation tools.

The quality standards in the sectors of the
packaging and the automotive becoming
increasingly strict, it had become necessary to
bring a guarantee on the inclusion cleanliness
of rolled metal. The Arcelor group thus decided
to obtain equipment making it possible to
control on line the internal quality of thin sheets:
control by Lamb wave. After validation by
Arcelor Research, the responsibility for
industrialization was entrusted to the Spie
company which since the year 2000, equipped
5 sites.

Equipment for inclusion measurement of coils of thin sheets intended for the packaging (drink cans)
and automotive sectors.

A gantry supports the two wheels of measurement,
these last being equipped ultrasonic transducers with
adjustable incidence. Two calibration charts are also
present in order to check the sensors on line.
A PLC manages the movements of the machine as well
as the distribution of the coupling liquid.

The acquisition computer contains 1 emission and 4

A temperature regulator drives the induction heater
and manage the steps for measurements.
A motor drive controlled by computer starts motor
movements.
A water cooled induction heater allows to bring the
test coupon to more than 1000 °C. This test coupon is
placed into a quartz tube.
