Threats to the survivalof the modern world are numerous: one of the most
serious is corruption in education. It is 'damaging education.
I would like to highlight the issues of corruption in education since these have
extremely negative effects on the survivaland development of many countries.
Corruption in the education sector can be defined as “the systematic use of
public office for private benefit
More than ever beforeeducational institutions have become profit-oriented in
their struggle to survive, neglecting their basic function – to give them quality
education.
Hence, we witness that educational institutions emerge uncontrollably, offering
the sameor similar curriculumto attract as large severalstudents as possible
rather than providethem quality education.
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization a 2007 report
examined in detail how corruption damaged universities and schools around the
world.
There are many fakeuniversities, some of which advertisein the international
press, circulate information by sending spamand rank high on the hit lists of
search engines. We can also see that bachelor, master and doctoral theses can be
bought at rather low prices via the Internet, which entirely degrades the
importance and senseof education
A major causeof corruption in education?
The study showed the main causes of academic corruption to be students'poor
study habits (68.8%) and poor entry qualifications (66%). Itfurther showed that
the effects of this corruption include poor quality of university graduates (87%).
2. In the national budget of Pakistan for 2009-10, thefederal governmentallocated
Rs31.6bn for education with the addition of Rs2bn for the promotion of education
for all and Rs151.6mfor socialwelfareand special education.
Investmentin education is a positive move. But doling out such huge amounts of
money withoutany solid monitoring or a proper plan and accountability system
will not bring any fruitful results.
In the end, I’mlike to say that corruption in education is an illegal thing
Corruption in education affects morepeople than corruption in other sectors and
it affects the development potential of the whole country.
I just hope someday we all live in a world where education is free from
corruption
