Sparta's economy relied on farming while Athens' economy was based on maritime trade. Life in Sparta centered around a strong military and conquering other city-states, whereas life in Athens revolved around overseas trade. Both Sparta and Athens shared the same Greek religious beliefs and had the Olympian gods as part of their mythology. The two cities also had enemies in common, mainly the Persians. Sparta met its needs through the use of slaves, and the two powers eventually went to war against each other in the Peloponnese War.
