Athens and Sparta had differing economies and societies. Athens relied on trade while Sparta relied on farming and conquest. Life was difficult for most in Athens, where many worked as slaves in silver mines, while life in Sparta was somewhat better for women and education was valued. The two cities had different religious beliefs and landscapes but maintained a generally friendly relationship, though they competed for dominance of Greece. Both contributed militarily to defeating Persia.
