Building DUE DILIGENCE material for startups raising capitalBryan Starbuck
This document provides guidance on preparing materials for investor due diligence for angel investors. It recommends including a pitch deck, executive summary, product details, team bios, current investors, customer testimonials, financial projections, and legal documents in a Dropbox folder for easy sharing. Financial projections are critically important, and a rent-a-CFO is recommended to ensure they are realistic. The process should be treated like a sales pipeline with trusted introductions, follow up meetings to answer questions, and working in tranches to finalize investments along the way.
Bryan Starbuck is an experienced startup founder and CEO. He provides advice on lean startup techniques that focus on quickly validating assumptions and removing big risks early through cheap testing. This includes creating minimum viable products and pitch decks and getting feedback from customers, employees, advisors and investors to test plans before fully committing resources. The goal is to learn what works through short iterations rather than long development cycles.
This document discusses customer acquisition strategies for startups. It covers bootstrapping by getting initial rabid fans through friends and networking events. It emphasizes validating the product with a small group before large-scale marketing. Content marketing and growth hacking techniques are also discussed, like using content to spread brand awareness and leveraging existing users to find new customers. The document provides examples from companies like Instagram, Wetpaint, and AirBnB and recommends resources for learning more about customer acquisition best practices.
Bryan Starbuck, a founder's institute mentor and former CEO, discusses the importance of financial modeling for startups to prevent failure. He recommends modeling revenue early to test pricing strategies and business models. Investors expect proposed companies to target large markets of $40-80 million in revenue annually. However, 95% of companies pursue markets that are too small. To attract investors, companies need to prove they can reach over $100 million in revenue for angels or $400-800 million for VCs. They must also show there is a real problem for customers, their solution solves it uniquely, and customers will pay the company's prices for a huge target market.
This document provides guidance for first-time founders on raising capital from angels and venture capitalists (VCs). It emphasizes focusing the pitch on demonstrating a huge market size for the solution and convincing investors that the company can achieve over $100 million or $400 million in revenue. The process involves pitching to investors, answering diligence questions, negotiating terms, and closing the deal. It recommends working with several batches of VC firms simultaneously to improve chances of funding and terms.
Marketing and Sales strategies for StartupsBryan Starbuck
For B2C and B2B companies. This pairs up the Marketing and Sales strategy. It covers both eCommerce and sales teams sales strategies, and the marketing needed for that sales strategy.
This document provides guidance for first-time founders on raising capital. It discusses pitching to angels and venture capitalists, emphasizing the importance of understanding the investor's perspective. Key tips include focusing the pitch on addressing a real problem and potential for huge market size and revenue. Due diligence, negotiations, and trust-building are important final steps to closing a funding deal. Additional resources are recommended for ongoing learning about startups.
Bryan Starbuck provides a presentation on research shaping startups. He outlines a 4 step process for validating startup ideas: 1) develop a list of ideas, 2) build a pitch deck for the top idea, 3) validate the idea with target customers, and 4) if it passes validation then build the startup, if it fails then repeat the process. Starbuck emphasizes the importance of validating business models and ideas by talking to potential customers and getting feedback on pitch decks to identify weaknesses or blind spots before fully developing a startup.
This document summarizes a talk about avoiding mistakes when starting a sales team for a pre-revenue startup. The biggest mistakes are 1) not having the founder achieve the ability to sell before hiring salespeople and 2) hiring salespeople too soon before establishing a successful sales process. The talk recommends the founder close 12 sales themselves first to learn the sales process before hiring a rep, and to use metrics to ensure sales and marketing costs do not exceed first year revenue before scaling the sales team. It also advises being cautious of full-time VP of Sales costs if revenue does not increase enough to cover their salary.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
