Sound Therapy: Natural Hearing Improvement Simone Carot Collins Sound Therapy Consultant
A little about me Lost 10% of my hearing due to ear infections By age 14, had noise induced hearing loss and tinnitus from loud music Completed 2 science degrees at UWA Used Sound Therapy in 2003 (aged 26) – hearing improved & tinnitus gone!
A little about me Completed Sound Therapy practitioner training in 2003 Trained in other natural therapies from 2004 Became primary distributor for Sound Therapy in WA in late 2006 Continue to use Sound Therapy as a preventative measure
What is Sound Therapy? A listening program developed by an ENT specialist in France Uses specially filtered classical music to rehabilitate the ear and stimulate the brain Different to other music therapies as the sound has a physiological effect on the ear and brain A portable program that can be used by anyone, anywhere
How was Sound Therapy developed? Dr Tomatis (1920 – 2001) first worked with singers He found that if they couldn’t hear a sound, they weren’t able to sing it He designed the “Electronic Ear” to manipulate frequencies to help alter one’s auditory curve By correcting hearing with the Electronic Ear, he restored the missing sounds to the voice
How was Sound Therapy developed? Consistent treatment with the Electronic Ear over a certain period of time modifies hearing and speech permanently Fluctuating sounds alternating between highs and lows give the ear muscles a gym work out This tones the muscles, which helps them work properly
How was Sound Therapy developed? Tomatis discovered a psychological component to hearing We can choose to shut out sounds we don’t want to hear Founded the study of Audio-psycho-phonology A foetus begins to hear at 4½ months The foetus listens to the mother’s voice while still in the womb
How was Sound Therapy developed? Tomatis wrote 14 books and many articles Named Knight of Public Health of France (1951) Awarded a Gold Medal for Scientific Research (1958) Tomatis method is used in over 200 centres worldwide Numerous research studies
How was Sound Therapy developed? In the 1980s, Patricia Joudry was treated at a Tomatis Clinic in Montreal It improved her insomnia, exhaustion, sound sensitivity and writers block Patricia produced a portable, self-help version of the listening program Her daughter Rafaele founded Sound Therapy International, based in NSW
How it helps the ear 3 tiny bones – first to develop in utero: hammer , anvil and stirrup Smallest & densest bones in the body Hearing is a vital sense to a foetus
How it helps the ear 2 muscles: tensor tympani & stapedius Allow us to tune in to sounds we want to hear Sound Therapy tones these muscles High frequencies stimulate hair cells in inner ear
How it helps the brain High frequency sounds Are needed by the brain to function properly Replenish and restore our energy levels Are found in nature Low frequency sounds Deplete our energy levels Surround us on a daily nature Emitted by vehicles, machines, appliances
How it helps the brain Increased energy levels Good for chronic fatigue sufferers Reduced stress levels Better quality of sleep Overcomes insomnia Fewer hours of sleep needed
Sound Therapy and Hearing Loss Assists with hearing in a noisy room – hearing aids often make this worse Tunes up high frequency hearing , making speech comprehension easier Improves the body’s own function rather than compensating with a device
Sound Therapy and Hearing Loss “… My hearing was becoming progressively worse. Ear specialists told me it was caused by nerve damage, therefore nothing could be done… My hearing has improved to such an extent that I seldom have to use my hearing aid.” – D. Stuckel “ I was fitted with hearing aids. After several months the tinnitus in the right ear was so strong that the aid was useless… For eight months I persevered with the treatment. In the last three months I realised my hearing had improved so that I can now do without the aids. I have the hearing of a woman of 40 – I’m 87!” – G. Irwin
Sound Therapy and Tinnitus Tinnitus is a noise heard inside the ear that no one else can hear It is neurons firing from internal, not external, stimuli: Damage to the cilia Fluid imbalance Hyperactive brain cells No conventional treatment for tinnitus
Sound Therapy and Tinnitus The movement in the ear muscles caused by Sound Therapy can rebalance the fluid in the inner ear Brain cells are calmed Flattened cilia may be stimulated to regain their upright position Triumph Over Tinnitus offers other treatments plus chemicals to avoid
Learning and speech disorders Many of these disorders are auditory reception problems – they can’t make sense of what they hear. Another problem is confused laterality . A time delay in sounds going from the left ear to the right brain and then the left brain can cause stuttering or dyslexia. Sound Therapy produces right ear dominance
How do you use it? Requires a portable player with headphones Doesn’t take any time out of your day A carry pouch can be useful too Volume is kept very low You can still hear everything around you Do some listening with a hearing aid in, and some without it
How long does it take? 3 hours a day for adults 30 mins a day for children Average time for significant change is 3 months Hearing and tinnitus can take much longer, but usually some change is evident in that time Time required varies from person to person
Nutrition for the ear Environmental toxins contribute to poorer health We need 60 minerals a day to maintain good health Antioxidants are also important Use toxic-free home and personal care products to minimise exposure to harmful chemicals
How much does it cost? Basic Music Kit : $439 4 music CDs, 2 DVDs, manual and ongoing support Family Kit : $639 4 music CDs, 4 story CDs, 2 DVDs, manual and ongoing support Purchase a kit with accessories and receive free items Payment plans available
