A Message
from Soroptimist Leaders
The theme of this annual report is “growing dreams,” because
in so many ways that is what SIA does. We work to grow dreams.
The dreams of the women and girls we serve. The dreams of
our volunteer members. And the dreams we all share for the
future of our global organization. Every day, in our 20 countries
and territories, we are growing these dreams and making a
sustainable difference for women and girls around the world.
Last year was a big year—our award-winning programs
made an impact in the lives of deserving women and girls; we
engaged our existing members and enticed new supporters to
get involved with our mission through the LiveYourDream.org
strategy; and we brought in record contributions that will help
advance our mission. Throughout the year, we worked together
as leaders, regions, clubs, members, donors and staff to increase
our collective impact and shape our future. In FY13/14, we grew
dreams into successes in three notable areas:
H Live Your Dream: Education and Training Awards for
Women, which assists women who provide the primary source of
financial support for their families by giving them the resources
they need to improve their education, skills, and employment
prospects. In FY13/14, SIA disbursed $1.74 million (a 7 percent
increase) to 1,277 deserving women (a 3 percent increase)
in awards, with 80 percent of Soroptimist clubs (a 6 percent
increase) delivering this life-changing program around the world.
Of those surveyed, 100 percent of recipients report an increase
in self-esteem; 58 percent earned an educational certification
or degree; 89 percent of those who completed their education
secured higher-paying employment; 85 percent improved the
standard of living for themselves and their dependents; and 94
percent are serving as a role model for their dependents.
H LiveYourDream.org online model, which has propelled
forward our Strategic Plan goals of impact, engagement,
recognition and philanthropy with double and triple digits
increases in performance. We saw a whopping 371 percent
increase in the number of program actions taken through
the site, a 71 percent increase in the amount of contributions
($8,550), and a 140 percent increase in visitors coming to the
website. More than 26,000 people joined the LiveYourDream.org
community this last year, bringing the total number of supporters
to 52,876—90 percent of whom are new to the Soroptimist
mission (non-members).
H Contributions, which reached an all-time high of $2 million
received in support of our programs in one year. For the first
time, contributions surpassed member dues as the largest
source of operational revenue for the organization, allowing us
to grow bigger dreams and advance our mission. Eighty percent
of Soroptimist clubs contributed $690,890 to Club Giving:
Empowering Women and Girls to Live Their Dreams, with 67
percent of clubs giving at least 10 percent. Contributions to the
Laurel Society were up 36 percent over last fiscal year, totaling
more than $703,000.
This past year saw many other successes as well. We relaxed
our membership requirements, making it easier for people
to engage and join us in our important work. Fifteen new
Soroptimist clubs and 3,600 new members joined our ranks.
Social media engagement was up 60 percent over last year,
and we saw a 165 percent increase in the number of member
resources downloaded from the Soroptimist website.
Two new sponsors, Happify and Royal Neighbors of America,
joined the Soroptimist family, which together contributed
$72,500 in revenue.
And finally, we launched a new and exciting global program
for girls in FY13/14—Dream It, Be It: Career Support for
Girls. The program targets girls in secondary school who face
obstacles to their future success and provides them with access
to professional role models, career education and the resources
to live their dreams. It joins the Soroptimist Live Your Dream
Awards program in ensuring women and girls have access to
the education and training they need to reach their full
potential.
At all levels of our global organization, we share one
very important dream—which is to fulfill our mission of
improving the lives of women and girls through programs
leading to social and economic empowerment. Dedication
and hard work made our astounding growth possible this
year. As our dreams continue to grow, we congratulate
you on all that has been accomplished this past year. We
thank you—our members, donors and the women and
girls we serve—for inspiring SIA to dream big and keep
those dreams growing.

“I am so honored to be
chosen as a recipient of this
award, and I realize that
the Live Your Dream Award
is not recognition of just
me, but of the indomitable
female spirit, the human
spirit. Life has given me
many challenges, yes.
Nonetheless there are many
women in the world who
masquerade as mere mortals
every day, performing
superhuman feats without a
cape. So I hope that with this
recognition, I can represent
all these women, and that
my life will be spent paying
it forward to these unsung
heroes.”
—Shirlee Draper, 2014 Live
Your Dream Award Recipient
Each year, Soroptimist’s Live Your Dream
Awards program (formerly the Women’s
Opportunity Awards) provides financial
support to women working to achieve
their dreams for themselves and their
families. Each and every woman who
receives this award is a true inspiration.
They are women with great courage
in the face of unimaginable obstacles,
such as domestic and sexual violence,
divorce, death of a spouse and other
enormous life challenges.
Since 1972, Soroptimist has disbursed
more than $30 million through this
program, helping tens of thousands of
women. Recipients may use the cash
grants however they choose in support
of their education goals—including
for tuition, books, childcare and
transportation.
In FY13/14, 1,277 women received
more than $1.7 million. This year,
funding increased by $117,298 (7
percent) and 42 additional women
received the award. Soroptimist clubs
also gave more than 400 women
additional support valued at $70,915.
This support was provided in the
form of over 900 activities, including
mentoring, job training, tutoring, tax
and financial advice, and childcare.
The outcomes of the growing reach
the award has are
reflected in
the region
recipients who
responded to
follow-up surveys.
They report:
• An increase in
self-esteem and
self-confidence (100
percent).
• Earning an educational
degree/certification (58 percent).
• Continuing to pursue an
educational degree/certification (50
percent).
• Securing higher-paying employment
(those who completed their
education) (89 percent).
• An improved standard of living for
themselves and their dependents
(85 percent).
• Serving as a role model for their
dependents (94 percent).
The Live Your Dream Awards is
SIA’s major program and is central to
the organization’s ability to increase
its collective impact. The program
underwent a number of updates this
past year to ensure its continued growth
and success, including a name change
and the streamlining of the application
process.
As in year’s past, three remarkable
women —Shirlee Draper, Rebecca
Shuflin and Christina Valadez—received
$10,000 federation-level awards. Click

Named after the president of
the first Soroptimist club, the
Soroptimist Violet Richardson
Award honors girls who are
making a difference through
volunteer service. Each year,
Soroptimist clubs honor girls who
donate their time and energy to
causes that make the community
and world a better place.
During FY13/14, 51 percent of
clubs participated, recognizing
743 girls. Across the federation,
Soroptimist awarded $278,707
to girls and $133,559 to 348
volunteer organizations.
To measure the program’s
impact, Soroptimist sends surveys
to recipients three years after they
receive the award. In FY13/14,
survey results showed:
• 100 percent of
respondents are still
volunteering
• 80 percent
of respondents
reported
their volunteer work is focused on
women and girls.
• 100 percent of respondents
reported the award increased
their self-confidence.
This year’s federation finalist,
Carolyn Hoemann of Clive, Iowa,
volunteers with Valley Standing
Against Sexual Assualt (SASA), a
student organization she created
to help victims in her community
recovering from sexual abuse.
Carolyn, who experienced a
sexually abusive relationship first-
hand, founded the support group
when she discovered that many of
her friends had also been victims
of sexual violence. SASA is a
supportive and welcoming group
made up of victims and allies
who help each other cope with
the memories and emotions that
come with sexual trauma.

tremendous impact on
me. The support from
other members has
helped me recuperate
from my own past

SI/Cochabamba, Brazil, used its $10,000 grant to provide
rural women with access to reproductive health exams
including pap smears, ultrasounds and mammograms.
In addition, club members hosted weekly education
and health-care talks, posted educational banners and
distributed flyers all in an effort to raise awareness about
women’s health.
Soroptimist Club Grants for Women and Girls enable
clubs to make a real difference in the lives of women
and girls in their communities by addressing specific
local need. SIA received 78 proposals requesting
$517,500 in funding. A task force made up of
members of the SIA Program Council reviewed the
proposals and recommended funding to the SIA
president for approval.
For the FY13/14, SIA granted a total of $217,000 to
43 Soroptimist clubs for new or ongoing projects.
Grants ranged from $500 to $10,000 and were
given to clubs in eight countries—Bolivia, Brazil,
Canada, Ecuador, Japan, Paraguay, the Philippines,
and the United States. This year’s projects include
providing medical supplies for diabetes and blood
pressure screenings for women; supplying office
space and phones to assist immigrant domestic
violence survivors; and holding an eight-week
financial literacy program to improve women’s
education, job resources and economic opportunity.
To date, 30 projects have been completed, with 96
percent meeting their stated objectives.
As in years past, the grants not only helped women
and girls; they also helped the clubs. Of the clubs
that have submitted a final report, 70 percent gained
new members and 63 percent received media
coverage as a result of the funded projects.

Soroptimist’s Disaster Grants for Women
and Girls target the special needs of
women and girls before, during and after
disasters. Women and girls are particularly
vulnerable during disasters and lack access
to resources. They also have special
abilities to respond to disasters, which are
often overlooked. While disasters create
hardships for many, women and girls are
disproportionately vulnerable because
of existing gender inequalities that are
magnified during and following a disaster.
In FY13/14:
• $129,761 was donated to the SIA
Disaster Fund
• Six grants were disbursed totaling
$59,258.
SIA granted $20,000 to
SI/Kalibo, Philippines,
after Typhoon Quinta displaced
residents and farm animals,
and submerged in mud office
spaces, office equipment
and supplies. The club
provided livelihood skills
training opportunities to
women affected by the
disaster so they would be able to earn an
income and support their families.
$10,000 was given to
MADRE, which partnered with
Diaspora Community Services (DCS) to
provide technical assistance needed to
apply a gender perspective to the work
of empowering women after a disaster.
The grant provided services to women
and their families who are low-income
Haitian Americans and Haitian immigrants
coping with complex challenges related
to the 2010 earthquake in Port-au-Prince.
The grant also assisted those affected by
Superstorm Sandy, which impacted the
New York/New Jersey area in 2012. As a
result of the grant, 151 families received
food coupons. DCS was also able to
utilize a mobile unit to conduct outreach
to additional women and families by
delivering food, medicine and clothing,
which would not have been possible via
public transportation.
SI/Marine Iwaki, Japan,
received $5,000 for its Picture Book
Project, which aimed to create strong
bonds between mothers and children,
in addition to reducing mothers’ post-
traumatic stress disorder as a result of the
2011 earthquake and nuclear disaster, by
having mothers read to their children.
SIA’s Philippines Region
also received $20,000 after a
7.2 magnitude earthquake devastated
the Bohol Island Province in October,
2013. Many buildings and homes
were destroyed, causing thousands
of individuals to be displaced. SIA’s
Philippines Region partnered with
organizations providing relief in the area
to target women and girls and provided
disaster kits, which included personal
hygiene and safety items.

During FY13/14, SIA laid the ground work for a new global program for girls. As the organization continues to create sustainable,
measurable change in the lives of girls in its 20 countries and territories, SIA is optimistic this program will help girls to reach their full
potential and live their dreams.
The new program, Dream It, Be It: Career Support for Girls, will help girls grow up to be strong, successful, happy adults. Dream
It, Be It targets girls in secondary school who face obstacles to their future success. It provides them with access to professional role
models, career education and the resources to live their dreams. Soroptimist clubs will work in partnership with girls in small groups or
in a conference setting to provide them with the information and resources they want and need to be successful. The topics covered
include career opportunities, setting and achieving goals, overcoming obstacles to success, and how to move forward after setbacks
or failures. Here is a look at the research SIA conducted in preparation for designing this program.

Soroptimist clubs and members work beyond their borders to help grow the
organization’s global impact. Their hard work and dedication makes it possible for
SIA programs to reach the women and girls who need them most. Clubs carry out
federation programs such as the Live Your Dream Awards, but they also deliver on
the mission in their own communities by evaluating conditions and creating projects
that address critical local need.
The projects on this page are representative of the thousands of hours and dollars
contributed by Soroptimist club members throughout 20 countries and territories.
Kudos to the clubs and members for their incredible efforts to make the world a
better place for women and girls.
SI/Curitiba Batel, Brazil, (pictured on page 10) hosted an event to educate
women and girls about healthy relationships, and raise awareness about teen dating
and domestic violence.
SI/Hikone, Japan, (pictured on page 10) participated in the International Day
for Elimination of Violence Against Women. Members distributed hotline cards and
purple ribbons at local domestic violence facilities, hospitals and universities.
SI/Long Beach Island, New Jersey, opened a Suit Up for Success store,
which provides gently used professional clothing to women in need of appropriate
items for job interviews or office positions.
SI/Pampanga, Philippines, organized a half-day human trafficking
lecture to help local women and girls avoid sex-trafficking, and to assist victims.
SI/San Juan, Puerto Rico, teamed up with a local substance abuse
shelter to teach women ways to lead healthy lifestyles and prevent illnesses.
Participants learned about topics including heart disease, breast and cervical
cancer, and high blood pressure.
At the end of FY13/14,
Soroptimist comprised 20
countries and territories,
including Argentina, Bolivia,
Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia,
Ecuador, Guam, Japan, Korea,
Mexico, Northern Mariana
Islands, Panama, Paraguay, Peru,
Philippines, Puerto Rico, Taiwan,
