Nonprofit Partner Program Expressions of Gratitude
2010AnnualReport
1. Dear (Name),
What a great year it has been here at the National Ability Center! Your support has made a direct and
positive impact in the lives of individuals with disabilities and their families. Thank you!
The economic downturn has tested non-profits across the nation, but by staying true to our mission
and our motto – “If I can do this, I can do anything” – the National Ability Center has risen to the
challenge. We have sharpened our focus, evaluated our existing resources, and sought new and
creative ways to leverage our talents.
In the last year, we:
Devoted more than 80% of our resources to the Center’s core and highest need programs;
Extended our reach to more than 1,400 children with and without disabilities through
inclusive programming and peer partnerships. These programs teach skills, challenge
stereotypes and develop lasting friendships;
Expanded service hours for wounded warriors by more than 400% to meet the growing
demand of this emerging group as they heal and transition back into service or civilian life.
The National Ability Center’s programs are more important now than ever. Our existing social and
healthcare systems are not sufficient to manage the growing numbers of disabilities facing our nation.
By providing access to expert staff, state-of-the-art adaptive equipment, and a nurturing, yet
challenging environment, the NAC perseveres as a champion for change in the lives of individuals
with disabilities and their families.
As Kathy Stott, mother of participant David Stott, a child with Autism, noted:
“If I had every dime that I’d ever spent on physical, occupational, psychiatric care for
David, I feel that it would have been better spent – for David’s needs – at the NAC
than almost anyplace else.”
As we look to the future, the need for our programs will only continue to increase. The statistics on
soldiers who return from duty and attemp to reintegrate into their families and communities are
grave. More and more wounded warriors are fall into at-risk behaviors in order to cope with the
emotional and physical tolls of war including depression, substance abuse, domestic violence, divorce,
and suicide. One out of 110 children in the United States is diagnosed on the autism spectrum making
it more prevalent than childhood cancer. How we challenge, heal, and empower individuals with
disabilities not only concerns those with disabilities, but their families, their communities, and the
overall health of our nation.
Thank you for your investment in the National Ability Center and into the legacy we develop for
individuals, families and their communities. If you have not already, I invite you to join me in making
a year-end gift to support the National Ability Center. Kristi Brangle, Executive Assistant for
Resource Development, will gladly help you facilitate your gift over the phone, electronically or by
mail. In addition, if you would like to make your gift in person, we will gladly provide you a tour of
the ranch, including highlights of the improvements we have made and plans we have for the
upcoming year. Your gift will guarantee the success of our mission, help us meet the demand for our
services, and ensure that the National Ability Center will continue to be here as a force for positive
change in the lives of individuals with disabilities.
Sincerely,
Scott Jager

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Indian philosopher Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” For those of you
who have visited the National Ability Center and personally witnessed our mission in action, you have first-
hand knowledge of the unique transformational power that can be had here.
The NAC is a champion for the development of lifetime skills for people of all ages
and abilities through affordable, therapeutic sports programs within a supportive and
nurturing environment. Thousands of individuals credit the NAC for their successful
healing – providing them with the skills, confidence, and attitude they need to achieve a
whole and successful life. Over the last year, we touched the lives of more than 10,000
individuals – fathers and mothers, sons and daughters, soldiers and friends – who have
toured our ranch, participated in our programs, and volunteered their services.
NAC therapists and recreation specialists consistently remind our families of the
profound and positive shift in a person’s capacity to heal both emotionally and physically
within the framework of accomplishment. Through programs such as the ropes and
challenge courses, Hippotherapy, alpine skiing, and cycling, participants and their families can share and
celebrate in each other’s successes in reaching new heights. Simply, we offer the opportunity for all participants of all abilities to heal by doing.
The National Ability Center’s powerful programs also challenge stereotypes – focusing our participants, their family members and the
community to see abilities rather than disabilities. NAC team programs like sled hockey, alpine skiing and snowboarding have been recognized
nationally and internationally as role models for inclusive athletic training programs designed for individuals with and without disabilities to
work together to push themselves to the next level of fitness and accomplishment. The success of our team approach was highlighted during
the 2010 Winter Paralympic Games in Vancouver when NAC elite athletes Greg Shaw, Stephani Victor,
Arly Velasquez, Talan Skeels-Piggins and Danelle and Rob Ulmstead competed at the world’s highest level
of adaptive sports.
At the National Ability Center, we are the change we want to see. Please join me in 2011 as we continue to
change one life, one family, one community at a time. Working together, we will continue to be a positive
force for change throughout the world.
Gail Loveland
The last year was an exciting one for the National Ability Center. Following a national search, the Board
chose Gail Loveland to lead the Center as its new Executive Director. Gail comes to the NAC with
more than 15 years of experience as a non-profit leader, most recently from her five years of work
with a U.S. Paralympics and Disabled Sports USA partner program based in Seattle, Washington. We
are thrilled with the creativity and energy she brings to the NAC family.
While organizations around the country have struggled in the current
economic climate, the Ability Center staff and board worked jointly over
the last year to continue our program delivery to those in need. Faced
with declining donations, we tightened our belts and created a focused plan to build capacity in
existing activities. Thanks to those efforts and the willingness of our donors and supporters to
recognize the needs of our community and our mission, our finances and organization remain
strong. We are proud that $.83 out of every dollar donated returns directly to the programs and
services we provide.
The National Ability Center staff strives to provide the highest quality programs and services to participants, their families
and friends. That goal would not be possible without the army of NAC volunteers supporting our mission. Over the last
year volunteers could be seen throughout our programs, events, committees, and in our offices and facilities. Our volunteers
bring with them new ideas, infectious energy and an unmatched dedication. Collectively, volunteers contributed over 15,000
hours of volunteer time, estimated at a value of more than $300,000 in in-kind services, to our mission.
We recognize that our success is dependent upon your help. Together we are making a profound difference in the lives of
those with disabilities within our community, our nation and around the world. Thank you for your investment in our mission
and in the lives of those we touch.
