This document is a presentation on solving a numerical problem on boiler performance. It provides the problem statement which includes observations made during a 24 hour boiler trial such as the steam generation rate and coal consumed. It asks to determine the mass of coal burnt per hour per square meter of grate, equivalent evaporation from water at 100C per kg of coal, equivalent evaporation from water at 100C per square meter of heating surface per hour, and the boiler efficiency. The presentation then provides the solution steps to calculate these values. It also includes background information on the presenter, subject, and institution. The vision and goals of the department and institution are stated.

The Global CCS Institute has recently published a feasibility study report on applying carbon capture and storage (CCS) to a steel plant in China. Toshiba was commissioned to conduct the study in collaboration with Chinese corporations.
The feasibility suggests that carbon capture in Chinese steel plants is a cost effective means of reducing carbon emissions compared with similar plants around the world. In this webinar, Toshiba presented on the major findings of this feasibility study.

This is the second in a series of 'Show and Tell' webinars from the Ofgem Strategic Innovation Fund Round 1 Discovery phase, covering the Heat projects.
Consumers need better access to low-carbon heating options which remain reliable and affordable in comparison to existing solutions. For many domestic, commercial, and industrial end consumers, heat comprises a considerable proportion of their energy bills.
There are a variety of technologies which could potentially contribute to heat decarbonisation. These include heat networks, electric and hybrid heat pumps, hydrogen, biofuels and others.
As examples, you will hear from SIF projects working on developing the gas networks to adapt to hydrogen, and electricity networks exploring the use of thermal energy storage as a source of flexibility.
The Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) is an Ofgem programme managed in partnership with Innovate UK, part of UKRI. The SIF aims to fund network innovation that will contribute to achieving Net Zero rapidly and at lowest cost to consumers, and help transform the UK into the ‘Silicon Valley’ of energy, making it the best place for high-potential businesses to grow and scale in the energy market.

CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.

Immunizing Image Classifiers Against Localized Adversary Attacksgerogepatton
This paper addresses the vulnerability of deep learning models, particularly convolutional neural networks
(CNN)s, to adversarial attacks and presents a proactive training technique designed to counter them. We
introduce a novel volumization algorithm, which transforms 2D images into 3D volumetric representations.
When combined with 3D convolution and deep curriculum learning optimization (CLO), itsignificantly improves
the immunity of models against localized universal attacks by up to 40%. We evaluate our proposed approach
using contemporary CNN architectures and the modified Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR-10
and CIFAR-100) and ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC12) datasets, showcasing
accuracy improvements over previous techniques. The results indicate that the combination of the volumetric
input and curriculum learning holds significant promise for mitigating adversarial attacks without necessitating
adversary training.

3. Problem statement
During the boiler trial for 24 hours following observations
were made:
• Steam generation: 16 bar, dry saturated;
• Coal consumed: 10,000 kg;
• Rate of steam generation: 2500 kg/hr;
• Feed water temperature: 30℃;
• Total heating surface area: 3000 m2;
• Total grate area: 4 m2;
• Calorific value of coal: 28,000 kJ/kg;
Determine:
(i) Mass of coal burnt per m2 of grate per hour;
(ii) Equivalent evaporation from and at 100℃ per kg of coal;
(iii) Equivalent evaporation from and at 100℃ per m2
of total heating surface per hour;
(iv) Boiler efficiency.
