What a fantastic way to open up our New Hombu Dojo at Cas-
tle Hill. We all had such a fantastic experience (teacher's and
student's alike) and I am sure our families are also included in
this.
We had in total 36 junior students and 16 senior students
grade, and the level demonstrated by all was amazing.
I would like to take this opportunity to also thank everyone in-
volved in setting up and taking down of our training school to-
day, it is very appreciated.
It is also with great pleasure that we advise you all that we
have a new website (nkainternational.org), a new email ad-
dress (info@nkainternational.org) and our NEW Hombu
Dojo training timetable with specialist classes starting from
June this year.
Please note the following information;
Karate Classes:
Tuesday and Thursday evening classes remain un-
changed,
We will be reintroducing our Sunday morning Class (Mixed
JNR/SNR) from 10am to 11am (from June 5th),
We will be commencing Monday and Wednesday
night (7:30pm to 9pm) Kata and Grading Classes for sen-
ior students (from June 6th),
We will be commencing Junior only classes (ages 5 to
12) from 4:45 to 5:45pm on Monday, Tuesday and Wednes-
day evenings (from June 6th) -Bookings are essential for
these classes as spaces are limited. Please book early
by letting me know.
S.M.A.R.T. Defence Classes (women and children
over 13yrs of age):
From June 5th we are commencing S.M.A.R.T. Self-
Defence classes that run for 5 weeks. Classes will be
held on Sunday mornings (9am to 10am) and Monday
and Wednesday evenings (6:30 to 7:30pm). These
classes are perfect for mums with busy schedules and
children greater than 13yrs of age that don't necessarily
want to learn Karate, but would like to learn how to de-
fend themselves. Get a group of friends together and
learn Simple Methods and Reliable Techniques in Self-
Defence - Bookings are essential for these classes
as spaces are limited so please book early by letting
me know. Please note that these classes require
additional payment and are not included as part of
your Karate training fees ($50 per person for 5
weeks)
BlackBelt/Weapons Only training Classes:
These classes are strictly only for Black Belt students
and will occur each month on the 2nd and 4th Sun-
days from 11am to 12:30pm with the first class
scheduled for June 12th. -Bookings are essential
for these classes and must be made in advance.
Please note that these classes require additional
payment ($20/student per session).
Senior Advanced Training With Shihan Red:
These classes are for all senior students of any grade
and will occur on the 1st Sunday of each month from
11am to 12:30pm with the first class scheduled for June
5th. These classes will involve training in ground de-
fense and grappling techniques. -Bookings are essen-
tial for these classes and must be made in advance.

Testimonial by Shihan Jim Genovese graduate of the
Japan Karatedo College on Kancho Deena Naidu
I met Kancho Deena Naidu (Dino as I know him) at the All Japan
Karate Do College in Tokyo in the early 1970’s. He was already
there when I arrived and was a respected student at the col-
lege.Shortly after my arrival I met Deena Naidu and we quickly
became friends. We were all foreign students training in karate
in Japan. The training in Japan was very strict and arduous. We
started early in the morning and trained late into the night. Spar-
ring, conditioning, physical training, meditation, and spiritual
training were all a part of our daily life.
Deena Naidu always trained hard and did well. He had a good
spirit, and a good heart. He paid close attention to all the les-
sons, and was really interested in the spiritual aspects of our
training. He had come to increase his skills and knowledge, so
he could better lead his karate organization in South Africa. We
trained and studied with the best in Japan. We trained primarily
in Goju Ryu, but we also trained in Shotokan, Shitoryu, weap-
ons , and Okinawan Goju. We were trained in Shintoism, Bud-
dhism, and healing arts for dojo injuries.
We all lived in the dormitory at the school. We were often sum-
moned at all times of the day and night to go down to the dojo
for a special event or special training. Living and training to-
gether we all got to know each other very well. Deena Naidu
was always a dedicated and conscientious student, and one of
Master Gogen Yamaguchi’s favourites. The master always spoke
well of him, and liked him very much. It was an arduous and
difficult year, but soon it came to an end. Deena Naidu gradu-
ated with honours and Master Yamaguchi praised him as one of
his better students. He was recognized as a good teacher, and a
spiritual karate practioner.
Recently, he got in touch with me after over 25 years. We re-established
our friendship, and met again in Canada while he was travelling in
North America. It was wonderful seeing him and catching up after all
these years. It was even better to find out that he had continued his life-
long study of karate, and taken his initial training and continued his
growth, as he still does.
Deena Naidu, the man I knew in Japan has just grown and refined in the
man I met in Victoria, Canada. I was proud to be his friend then, and
even prouder to be his friend now.

It is like I have known Kancho Deena Naidu for decades,yet we met 21

Kancho Deena Naidu I believe in Budo, I understand the way as this is
what my teacher showed me, I trust him and honour him so I will be
doing myself an injustice if I do not go the way he pointed to me. I do not

Kancho Deena Naidu was personally trained by Gogen Yamaguchi Sen-
sei the world famous master. Kancho graduated from Gogen Yamaguchi
Sensei’s college in 1976 and became the 6th in the world to do it. Goshin
kan does not participate in tournaments and all of its teachers are re-
garded as the finest in the world. It is totally traditional and has an edu-
cation in human values program. Goshin kan has now a college in Syd-
ney Australia to train graduates from all around the world. Kancho has
done a great deal of work for the betterment of the karate community.
Gogen Sensei treated him like a son. His school teaches traditional ka-
rate like no one else. His 29 systems of karate is not like the fast track
school that only teach basics, moving, kata and Kumite. His goal is to
improve the quality of life for all who come to him and teach them the
skills they need for defence. He does not sit on a pedestal but trains and
guides all his students. He never gives up on his students.
Kancho Deena Naidu That is 40 years ago. Wow! How fast does time
travels when you having fun.

Martial Arts Brief: Kancho Deena NaiduPage 4 S O L O M Z
Kancho Deena Naidu was born in the year
1949 in South Africa. His mother gave birth to
him prematurely. Kancho graduated in the
Japan Karate Do College in Tokyo in 1976, 6th
in the world under Grandmaster Gogen Yama-
guchi and became the only one South African
to have done so in the world. “ Gogen sensei
took me in as a son”, he said.
Kancho lives in Australia in the suburb of Syd-
ney where he runs an international organiza-
tion called NKA International Goshin Karate-
Do. His teaching does not involve competitions
or tournaments of any kind as he believes that
this is the breeding ground for ego and com-
petitions he believes does very little to im-
prove character or help people defend them-
selves. He says karate has three parts: physi-
cal for body, mental for the mind and spiritual
for the heart.
His involvement in spirituality began in child-
hood as he has been a seeker of truth for the
major part of his life. His writing of books sud-
denly started on a trip to India in the 1988 and
grew drawing a worldwide audience. He has
been called as guest speaker in many coun-
tries. In Japan he addressed a crowd of over
3500 people, and many hundreds in other
countries. He also spoke in New York a couple
of years ago. He took part in recently in a
movie in Hollywood called “Justice for Hire”.
Kancho taught the Australian Army for two
years. He was also a national coordinator for
“Vision Australia” helping people with sight
impairment. He was nominated ‘Australian of
the Year”. He has now produced many books
in hard copies: Discovering Martial Art, Bu-
doka-True Spiritual Warriors, Poems of the
Spiritual Heart. His audio books are “Goshin-
The Secret Revealed”, “The Adventure of
Gugu”, “My Dear Driver”, My Dear Child”,
“My Dear Student”. Kancho started an organi-
zation called “Sanctuary 108” and have as-
sisted many people with depression. He has
saved many lives over many years and wants
to continue this effort on a world scale.
He has now started NKA International to
unify the teaching of Budo to bring mar-
tial artists together for the upliftment of
human beings. To share human values in
a program called “KarateCare”. The
human values are Truth, Love, Peace,
Right Conduct and Non Violence.
NKA comprise of teachers globally for the
pure purpose of reigniting Traditional Karat-
eDo which had lost its way for decades. Teach-
ers have come from different countries with
their clear objective of making a difference, as
in their hearts know KarateDo had taken a
wrong direction of making it a game. We have
teachers from many countries and we will
continue to grow.
Teachers in our team are determined to improve
life skills of students by bringing back good
discipline, better self control training, education
in human values, improvised character develop-
ment programs, confidence development train-
ing and the true art of KarateDo. As we believe
KarateDo comprises of three aspects Physical
( Body), Mental (Mind) and Spiritual ( Life).
NKA is a brand new Karate organization that
focuses on the pure essence of traditional karate
that embraces human values. We are deter-
mined to lift the character of our students
through our KarateCare Program. The intensity
of karate practice does not just lie on the physi-
cal practice it is also that of the nature of the
person who practices the art. If bad people
practice karate no one is safe. If good people
practice the art everyone is safe. Our aim is to
convert the people with bad ways to become
good and those who are good to become better.
Goshin Kan has been working very hard on
many aspects of KarateDo since it inception. In
our schools we have implemented various ideas
that has had outstanding results.
Parents and students are very happy
with our KarateCare programs as this
has been improving our students’
character in all avenues of their lives.
We have safe ways of physical train-
ing, great ways of mental training and
life skills training that works. The radi-
ance of what we do will be moving to
many all around the world and to-
gether with the international teachers
lift life for all our students.
The prime objective of NKA Interna-
tional is to band together like minded
teachers world wide who desire to
impart the pure essence of traditional
karate do disciplines and values to all
its students. Every school within NKA
International will have its own knowl-
edge base of style or system of impart-
ing physical techniques. This opera-
tion of each school operates under its
own medium of understanding in
terms of physical technique. This will
allow each to have the freedom to
operate as they seem fit as long as
there is no cause for concern of what
happens to the students physically or
mentally. We accept all, into NKA
International immaterial of style or
system. We believe there is not one
way of executing technique however,
in terms of disciplines and values we
have a united format under one ban-
ner.
Our system is non competitive as we
find there is a growing interest in non
tournament world wide. Many have
asked Kancho Deena Naidu to create
such an organization for many years
but he was reluctant to do so as he
thought it was best to keep this only
within his own organization called
Goshin Kan. This has been working
superbly and the transformations of
many students were beyond all expec-
tations. This together with the growing
need for change in the world inspired
Kancho to have a world organization.
Kancho Deena Naidu has been a hard-
ened loyal student of Gogen Yamagu-
chi sensei for many decades. He
choose the path of his teacher who was
very happy at this and that was teach-
ing karate for defense only with spe-
cial emphasis on human development.
The other objectives of developing
character through Education in Human
Values. His teacher was proud of him
while he was alive and I am sure he
will continue to be happy with from the
“Botswana seminar is very special. I will
do my best for those who are sincere and
who respond. I would like everyone to
respond quicker and I will give my
heart”.

Seminar Brief

Interest in the various forms of martial art has been growing stead-
ily in English speaking countries during the last 30 to 40 years.
Sadly martial arts is seen by most practitioners and observers as a
means of immobilizing an opponent, whether in tournament or eve-
ryday life. It has been demonstrated through university-based re-
search in Western Australia that young people become more ag-
gressive in their speech, attitudes and behaviour after learning
some form of martial arts, when contrasted with measures taken
before they attended any classes. There seems to be a movement
away from purely self defence towards offensive and abusive to-
wards others. What a blight this is on what was once the good repu-
tation attached to these centuries-old techniques; and what a fester-
ing is growing in our midst when increasing numbers of disaffected
youth are being taught to behave with violence in thought, word
and deed.
There is a saying: “The darker the night, the brighter shines the
light.” Seen against the background of martial arts as it is per-
ceived and taught today, the work of Kancho Deena Naidu stands
out light a beacon of light showing the way across stormy seas of
anger, selfishness and violence saturating many of the Martial Arts
movements today. This is not to say that he is alone in his task.
Many stars can be seen in the vast darkness of the night sky. Yet he
stands out in his ability to inspire, guide and teach others in the
ancient traditions which hold that serenity, compassion, responsi-
bility, truth and non-violence are as essential to the Martial Arts as
salt to the sea water.
Kancho Naidu has 45 years of serious study in a number of styles of
martial arts. He took lessons in the fighting arts at the early age of
11 years. By January, 1971 he had started training in Budo-Ryu ka-
rate at the Zenuki Karate Institute, a well known karate organization
in South Africa.
By good fortune (or God’s grace) his chief instructor, Sensei Jam
Mohan was steeped in knowledge which extended beyond the
physical aspects of the fighting Arts, incorporating the mental and
spiritual aspects as well. The seeds fell on fertile ground, making a
deep impression upon the young Naidu, and leaving him with a
yearning to delve further into the hidden (forgotten) teachings un-
derlying all martial arts.
After four years at the Zenuki karate Institute Deena Naidu started
his own organisation known as Hirosaki Karate, with three mem-
bers of the first school having lessons on the foundation slab of a
garage.
The school quickly grew in size and moved to bigger premises in a
community hall. Soon that too was over flowing with new members.
As it caught up in a flash-flood of community interest in karate, with
new schools being established at a rapid rate Kancho, Deena
Naidu, affectionately known as Sensei Dino by many, felt the need
to make contact with more advanced teachers who focused on the
spiritual aspects of karate-do. In 1975 he went to Japan and studied
under Grand Master Gogen Yamaguchi Hanshi. Unknowingly he
made an impression upon the other students with his absolute dedi-
cation to training and the acquisition of further knowledge. Al-
though he showed little interest in gaining grades his obvious talent
led to his becoming the sixth person in the world to have graduated
from the famous Japan karate-do College.
As well as being an instructor of Budo-Ryu he became a qualified
instructor of Japanese weapons and gained credentials in five other
styles of Karate. Before leaving Japan Gogen Sensei gave told him
that he could use the name Goshin kan.
Upon his return to South Africa he established many other schools.
At the university Of Durban-Westville karate became a subject for
students in physical education. His creativity as a teacher grew in a
way that he began introducing new and innovative ways of integrat-
ing the spiritual into the physical aspects of karate. Word quickly
spread that here was style that not only gave confidence and prow-
ess in self defence, but also led to the discovery of an inner joy,
peace and wisdom.
In 1981 left Goshin kan South Africa in very capable hands and
immigrated to Australia. Here, from a small school in Blacktown to
many locations. Following up an invitation to observe one of his
classes in action, I discovered a sense of peace
and strength in the hall as I entered, and this powerful serenity
remained throughout the lesson. He has teachers who have great
warmth and humility and respect for authority.
Through all of my association with him I found Kancho Deena Naidu
to be a man with enormous talent, both as a practitioner and a
teacher of karate-do, yet one who believed that all of his skill was
by the grace of God. He believes that, although the karate instruc-
tor demonstrated physical skills and power, of greater importance
is that he/she be a living example to the students of values. He con-
tends that it is the role of the teacher to inspire and be a model of
what lies ahead of the student, and that the ‘sins’ of pride and arro-
gance have to be kept under watch so that they do not appear and
poison the instructor and the class.
On one occasion Kancho gave a talk on humility and said that a
teacher is a servant of the student. He demonstrated this by wash-
ing the feet of two students. This so moved the class that tears were
seen in many eyes.
Such a man is not afraid to be called weak and misguided by his
peers in the field of Martial arts. A certain mysterious strength
seems to pervade those who imbued with goodness and faith. Kan-
cho is one who knows that he is in the forefront of an exponential
change that will transform not only the Martial arts community, but
all of society.
I am honoured to call Kancho Deena Naidu my friend. He inspires
me with his enthusiasm for life and good living, his fearless applica-
tion of compassionate discipline in all aspects of his personal life,
and his dedicat5ion to the rediscovery and regeneration of the
spiritual quest underlying all traditional forms of martial arts. His
voice which will be heard, read and re-told. His is a vision which
will inspire others, like a candle which lights a thousand others
without diminishing its own light.

In this article Kancho Deena Naidu expresses
his desire to contribute to Australia and to oth-
ers around the world importance of the teach-
ings of human values and life virtues. This arti-
cle has some of his thoughts, parts of his
learning and understanding.
Kancho Deena Naidu is one of the leading exponents of traditional
karate-do both here in Australia and abroad. He has a strong stance
for the promotion and retention of this long-established art. It is his
opinion, as with most karate-ka from the old school of thinking,
through the practice of traditional Karate, good values and virtues
must be retained. The importance of this, he says, it invariably
builds up a better society of Budo-ka thereby contributing to an
improved community. In order to enhance the quality of life within
his student community, he teaches Education in Human Values and
Virtues (EHVV). This intense Human Values and Virtues program
has taken years to develop and is designed for karate-do practitio-
ners. This practice has now being adopted by other traditional
schools and martial arts systems that are directly associated with his
organisation. His students and associated members of his service
are enjoying and greatly benefiting from this high level of EHVV or
educare program.
Kancho Deena Naidu believes that ‘the development of character
is equally important as the physical aspects of the art.’ He says,
“In most situations it is one’s character that either gets one into trou-
ble or away from it. Without the implementation of values and vir-
tues in class, students may become ego driven, lost without proper
guidance, and may use the art incorrectly. This is because the young
human mind can easily be subjected to negative influences which
are constantly around them, as we have seen in so many cases. Any
organisation that guides its students with moral ethics and values
will be assisting the community and country in improving the qual-
ity of its people and thereby supporting the world to become a bet-
ter and a safer place. This is the desire of every good human being
on the planet.
Parents who send their children to learn Goshin Kan karate is be-
cause emphasis is given to Human Values and effective karate-do
instruction. These parents like most, have a great concern for the
well being of their children and their future. They believe the world
is becoming unsafe and immorality is so wide spread that its influ-
ences are creeping into these young minds from many sources.
Goshin kan’s teachings is what is needed and from reports received
it seems that they love all the aspects of what is being taught and
many people regardless of their age have benefited from these
unique teachings. Adults who also participate in their classes are
saying that all martial arts schools, corporate businesses, hospitality
industries etc. could benefit from this unique and terrific method of
learning and teachings. This lifts the human being into a far better
state of understanding of himself/herself and others and gives value
to life in terms of love and respect. Like most who have a more
knowledgeable understanding of life, parents are beginning to
believe that correct influence at the earliest stage of a young life
will help children grow and develop to become a more evolved
human being. It is the negative exposure from the many sources on
those who do not know the difference that is corrupting the young
minds to think it is okay to be improper in behaviour and attitudes.
Goshin Kan no doubt is having a tremendous positive impact on all
young minds and parents love it.
About Kancho Deena Naidu
Kancho was a student of the world famous Gogen Yamaguchi Sensei,
who was the president of the world renowned, Japan karate do
College in Tokyo, Japan. He graduated out of this college in 1976
and became the sixth graduate in the world. He was well liked by
his teacher, journeyed together with him and Mamasan (wife of
Gogen Sensei), to a number of places and has had the privilege of
having a number of private lessons with his famous and respected
teacher. Kancho has in his possession, a number of memorabilia
from his teacher Gogen Sensei and Gogen Sensei’s family and some
great stories to go with them. Gogen Sensei had an extreme desire
to keep the traditional light of karate-do burning for as long as the
world needed it. We all know that the karate world needs it more
than ever. It is a known fact that there aren’t many schools teaching
tradition any more. The karate world is moving into new trends and
tendencies and many young martial arts have little or no inclination
of what the real purpose and goals of Karate-do, or what the pur-
pose of life is. Many think of the art as a tool for fighting and hurting
others. This is because of the way it is depicted through some
sources of the media. Kancho says, ‘There is nothing in the real
art of karate-do that teaches you how to fight, what it teaches
you are how to defend yourself and how not to fight. Karate is
just a tool to help one protect oneself. Through learning this skill
one has to engage oneself in learning other skills which come with
the art such as discipline, self control, etiquette etc. Life is about
learning and gaining experience and also about a continuous self
improvement. It is more than the mundane things most people do
daily. Life is about our own inner discovery and has a journey far
greater than that of the five senses.’
There is a great need for instructors to give students lessons of true
Budo or Bujutsu, rather than the frilly type of martial arts that looks
good but does not work, in all areas of the true art such as the physi-
cal, mental and spiritual. Only a few could deliver this type of
knowledge. It is Kancho’s opinion that this is one of the reasons for
Gogen Sensei establishing the Zen Nihon (All Japan) karate-do Col-
lege. In this college subjects such as Yoga, different forms of karate
and spirituality were taught. Even in those early years of the col-
lege, only a few could grasp Gogen Sensei’s concept that Karate-do
is much more than just the physical. Very few foreigners would
attend the Yoga training, meditation or any of the lessons concern-
ing the deeper concepts of Gogen Sensei’s understanding, he said.
A few months prior to his death, Gogen Sensei made this statement
to Kancho, “Thousands of students heard but only a few listened.
Many think that karate-do is about Jiyu Kumite (free fighting) and it
is not.” Kancho remembers his Japanese friends telling him on a
number of occasions that many foreign students only come to Japan
to learn to fight. Very few really took what Japanese traditional
teachers were giving them, such as learning discipline, developing
respect for teachers, being humble and non egoistic etc.
Kancho Deena Naidu like a few others around him intend keeping
the traditional light burning. He says,“we have reignited the flame
of truth of karate-do and we are going to keep this light burning
for as long as it takes. It makes a huge difference to everyone
who embraces it and does so by changing their lives for the
better and also improves their level of awareness”. This light
represents the teachings of Gogen Sensei and other great teachers,
says Kancho Deena Naidu. Both Goshin-Kai and Goshin Kan believe
in the concept of truth and it explores all areas with deeper under-
standing.

to create such an organization for many years
but he was reluctant to do so as he thought it

I did ask, can you kindly share on the
concept of 'Hihyo' and its use in dojo
instruction.
It is well needed as a teacher and stu-
dent. Criticism is well needed. It is im-
portant also whose knowledge you re-
ceive. Teacher and student must be
humble to receive (Hihyo) Guidance.

My teacher passed on and we buried 12 Sep-
tember 2015. I am in my 2nd year of my 7th
Dan grade induction. He was to grade and
confer me the 7th Dan anytime this year. I
wish that this grading be done within and by
the NKA to help fulfil my teachers wish. He
did confer Dai Soke status, making me inheri-
tor of Oikado. I need your guidance and ad-
vice. Some organizations are ready to grade
me. I am not after the belt, the 7th Dan grad-
ing was a Spiritual call on my teacher having
been his loyal disciple for 30yrs.

is deeper, it is about spiritual development
as well. I can issue the grading immediately,
but I have not met you personally which i
would sincerely like to do. If you want to
obtain a grading from someone else you
could. But as you say it is not the grade you
after. You can call your self this level until i
see and examine you personally and then
make it official. Your teacher would have
been happy to have given you this grade and
it is sad that he did not and he passed away
before the task was complete. So I will say
take this level as a blessing from your
teacher and I will be in your country next
year to officially ordain you. If anyone ques-
tions you can use me as giving you that level.

Kancho and I met on Facebook on 21 August 2015 and
we quickly connected by a common vibration energy

to rush us into converting and changing our system and
style to theirs.

Since 2009 both have participated across
various structures in Oikado Gashuku,
Gradings, daily errands and external
internships. They have offered their
resources, secretarial and administrative
services to and for Oikado. Their current
mission is to help Oikado grow in leaps

A Better World is Our
Theme.
Karate is the start. We are powerful con-
tributes towards world peace.
The whole concept of Human Values is to
improve the character of the karate com-
munity. it is important for the students to
learn to value others, appreciate and ac-
cept people for who they are. As we all are
one humanity and must develop human
dignity of regard and respect towards. The
purpose of it all is avoidance rejecting,
belittling and insulting others. Taking care
of others rushing to help others in distress
is the first step forward, even where ten-
sion exists. It is so easy to ignore, looking
the other way, avoiding and thinking it is
not my problem.
Part of our human dignity is to love and we
do this with service and care. That is the
reason I called our program KarateCare.
Saying sorry if one is wrong, asking for
forgiveness if one had made a mistake in
the past. Favoring reconciliation due to
misunderstanding. Our program is about
Listening. I say to the students this means
focus on learning through listening. Listen
to what others are saying. How do you
know about others, you do this by paying
attention and be kind by lending your ear?
Today in Human life many are insensitive
and cold towards the feelings of others.
We need to care more, offer support. We
share human values daily, we tell stories
about our great heroes of human life. To-
day children are looking for role models
and mentors. They turn to starts, sports
champions etc. and many do not conduct
them self in a proper way. So we as karate
teachers want to develop students in a way
they become role models for others. By
doing this the world becomes better.
What makes us human is our inner nature of
goodness and righteousness. We as a karate
organization want to bring the best out of stu-
dents. We as teachers and as an organization
think about what are the attributes that consti-
tutes a good human person. It is kindness,
forgiveness, tolerance, compassion and love.
We want our students to develop good natures
so that they can integrate into the society or
community much better. I believe we are all
born with a divine nature and through associa-
tion and influences this can becomes good or
bad. The mind does not know how to discrimi-
nate; it is the learning that does this. And it
improves our conscious state to become better
in our ways.
We commit to serving humanity through a re-
turn to human values and we have chosen our
vehicle as KarateDo. NKA International has
been launched on 23 October 2015 and is
open for worldwide membership and affiliation
by teachers of the art to help spread and teach
the message. This ia our promise.

The OIKADO Martial Arts School is proud
to present its Grassroots Development
Program for 2010 – 2020. It is a result of
work by the OIKADO National Executive
Council and Technical Board and has em-
braced all stakeholders of the school. This
third phase of the program is set in the back-
ground of unprecedented unity and drive
demonstrated in the first phase (1995-2000)
and the second phase (2006-2010) to take
karate to the public. Recent developments in
Oikado Black Belts cadre resolve is to speak
and act in unity and also paramount to de-
liver martial arts/karate practice to the pub-
lic in a coordinated and structured way.
Crucial to the program was the appointment of a
strong and active National Technical Board headed
by Kyoshi Moses Topsoil Kgosibodiba, the Presi-
dent of the School, Shihan Gaabadzo Moseki,
Chairman Technical Board. Plus eight (8) active
black belts of instructorship status drawn across the
breath and length of Botswana. The Grassroots
Development Program sits alongside and
personal, educational, careers, emotional,
physical and spiritual dimensions.
The school aims to achieve these goals and in
2001-2005 & 2006-2014 we embarked on the
re-engineering exercise and increased the
number of instructors in order to expand the
program throughout the country.
The results have been dramatic, primarily
because enthusiasm for martial arts practice
and training does exist in local communities.
Martial arts/karate offers a genuine and safe
alternative and augments other performing
arts and sporting codes.
Its popularity is growing in leaps and bounds
at secondary schools, colleges and univer-
sity. It has attracted international interest.
Funds’ permitting our wish is to cascade the
program down to primary school children, to
rural communities near and remote.

where appropriate make adjustments.
The Grassroots Development Program
seeks to embrace and build the key compo-
nent required to achieve Youth Develop-

individuals to experience as positive, fun
and free atmosphere of martial arts/karate
practice and training and go on to fulfill
their true potential in the arts and across
various areas of their development: social,

Thank you for taking time to read and discuss
the Schools Karate Motivation Training Pro-
gram for Children and Young Teens.
Kyoshi Moses Kgosibodiba, a world class
karate trainer and instructor is now offering
Karate Motivation Training program to chil-
dren in Botswana and SADC member coun-
tries.
The program beneficiaries are children and
teens at primary (5-12yrs), junior (13-15yrs),
and senior (16-21 yrs) schools.
The program teaches martial arts/karate,
motivation and discipline to students and
have resulted in students who are fit and
much disciplined.
As every teacher knows, the benefits of a
disciplined student are enormous as they
study well at school and at home. Do and
submit their homework on time and prepare
for tests and examination in time.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The program also teaches self-confidence
and will highlight the dangers of smoking,
drug abuse and alcohol.
We believe that fit and disciplined students
will benefit the students themselves, the
school system, teachers and parents and the
community and society in which they reside.
This program takes students away from lazi-
ness, smoking, drinking and gets them in-
volved and motivated to become better stu-
dents. No other program offers such benefits!
The program will be taught and presented
by Mr. Moses Kgosibodiba, who has over 35
years experience as a world class instructor.
By this submission we wish to roll out the
program to primary, junior and senior secon-
dary schools. Funds permitting it will be our
delight for every school to be involved with

Shodan Oteng Master Katonto
Master Katonto is ranked Shodan in Oikado in 2015. A brief rank-
ing history shows that he graded Yellow in 2009, Green in 2011
and Blue 2013 and has 2 years training Oikado under Shihan
Kealeboga Lekgatlhane at BOFWA. Master had taken responsi-
bility to keep Oikado BOFWA Dojo alive in the absence of Shi-
han. He had also lived the spirit of taking Oikado to the people of
Kgatleng through establishing dojo in primary schools.
He is credited with attracting children in the age bracket of 5-
13years old. Himself 20 years old. Through his efforts Master
established a primary school dojo that he named the Thunder-
bolts Dojo Group in compliance with Oikado dojo branding
exercise. He continues to knock at every primary school doors to
establish and attract children to regular training. Thunder-bolts
Dojo Group, Mochudi branch has 6 active child-budoka under
the guidance of Master and Shihan. Master has committed to a
youthful life of regular training. He has the gift of attracting Kidz.
He has a daily personal program of 5km morning roadwork,
weight lifting, and dojo instruction in addition to being a student
of Oikado at Mochudi BOFWA.
In Master Katonto we see youthful vigor and exuberance that
must be fully supported and encouraged. Indeed duplicated by
other Oikado Youth. 2015 April, Master Katonto sat the Oikado
Shodan Test & Grading.

A results oriented teacher of Humanities, prac-
titioner and teacher of the martial arts with
good interpersonal, communication, research
and analytical skills. Ranko Shihan is a good
planner, organizer, decision-maker and pre-
senter. This has been proven by his success as
a teacher in Junior and Senior Secondary
School, College Lecturer and of the martial arts
for the past thirty years as evidenced by the
number of many students he has produced
some of whom are experienced black belts and
teachers of the art as well. We affectionately
call him Ninja at Oikado given that he likes
training late at night. Full of stealth and a firm
believer of “secrecy in silence and silence in
secrecy”. He was among the first three(3) to
grade Shodan in Oikado. An formidable kata
performer with impeccable agility during is
prime years. Ninja and I and Jonah Madibela
Shihan planted the Oikado seed when we went
into schools as teachers wherein we introduced
Oikado.

Kancho Deena Naidu was born in the year 1949 in South Africa. His
mother gave birth to him prematurely. Kancho graduated in the Japan
Karate Do College in Tokyo in 1976, 6th in the world under Grandmaster
Gogen Yamaguchi and became the only one South African to have done
so in the world. “ Gogen sensei took me in as a son”, he said.
Kancho lives in Australia in the suburb of Sydney where he runs an inter-
national organization called NKA International Goshin Karate-Do. His
teaching does not involve competitions or tournaments of any kind as he
believes that this is the breeding ground for ego and competitions he be-
lieves does very little to improve character or help people defend them-
selves. He says, karate has three parts: physical for body, mental for the
mind and spiritual for the heart.
His involvement in spirituality began in childhood as he has been a seeker
of truth for the major part of his life. His writing of books suddenly started
on a trip to India in the 1988 and grew drawing a worldwide audience. He
has been called as guest speaker in many countries. In Japan he addressed
a crowd of over 3500 people, and many hundreds in other countries. He
also spoke in New York a couple of years ago. He took part in recently in
a movie in Hollywood called “Justice for Hire”.
Kancho taught the Australian Army for two years. He was also a national
coordinator for “Vision Australia” helping people with sight impairment.
He was nominated ‘Australian of the Year”. He has now produced many
Books in hard copies: Discovering Martial Art, Budoka-True Spiritual Warriors,
Poems of the Spirituaal Heart. His audio books are “Goshin-The Secret Re-
vealed”, “The Adventure of Gugu”, “My Dear Driver”, My Dear Child”, “My
Dear Student”. Kancho started an organization called “ Sanctuary 108” and have
assisted many people with depression. He has saved many lives over many years
and wants to continue this effort on a world scale.
He has now started NKA International to unify the teaching of Budo to bring
martial artists together for the upliftment of human beings. To share human values

About Kancho Deena Naidu
Kancho was a student of the world famous Gogen Yamaguchi Sensei, who was the president of
the world renowned, Japan karate do College in Tokyo, Japan. He graduated out of this col-
lege in 1976 and became the sixth graduate in the world. He was well liked by his teacher, jour-
neyed together with him and Mamasan (wife of Gogen Sensei), to a number of places and has
had the privilege of having a number of private lessons with his famous and respected teacher.
Kancho has in his possession, a number of memorabilia from his teacher Gogen Sensei and
Gogen Sensei’s family and some great stories to go with them. Gogen Sensei had an extreme
desire to keep the traditional light of karate-do burning for as long as the world needed it. We all
know that the karate world needs it more than ever. It is a known fact that there aren’t many
schools teaching tradition any more. The karate world is moving into new trends and tendencies
and many young martial arts have little or no inclination of what the real purpose and goals of Ka-
rate-do, or what the purpose of life is. Many think of the art as a tool for fighting and hurting oth-
ers. This is because of the way it is depicted through some sources of the media. Kancho says,
‘There is nothing in the real art of karate-do that teaches you how to fight, what it teaches
you are how to defend yourself and how not to fight. Karate is just a tool to help one protect
oneself. Through learning this skill one has to engage oneself in learning other skills which come
with the art such as discipline, self control, etiquette etc. Life is about learning and gaining experi-
ence and also about a continuous self improvement. It is more than the mundane things most
people do daily. Life is about our own inner discovery and has a journey far greater than that of
the five senses.’
There is a great need for instructors to give students lessons of true Budo or Bujutsu, rather than
the frilly type of martial arts that looks good but does not work, in all areas of the true art such as
the physical, mental and spiritual. Only a few could deliver this type of knowledge. It is Kancho’s
opinion that this is one of the reasons for Gogen Sensei establishing the Zen Nihon (All Japan)
karate-do College. In this college subjects such as Yoga, different forms of karate and spirituality
were taught. Even in those early years of the college, only a few could grasp Gogen Sensei’s
concept that Karate-do is much more than just the physical. Very few foreigners would attend
the Yoga training, meditation or any of the lessons concerning the deeper concepts of Gogen
Sensei’s understanding, he said.
A few months prior to his death, Gogen Sensei made this statement to Kancho, “Thousands of
students heard but only a few listened. Many think that karate-do is about Jiyu Kumite (free fight-
ing) and it is not.” Kancho remembers his Japanese friends telling him on a number of occasions
that many foreign students only come to Japan to learn to fight. Very few really took what Japa-
nese traditional teachers were giving them, such as learning discipline, developing respect for
teachers, being humble and non egoistic etc.
Kancho Deena Naidu like a few others around him intend keeping the traditional light burning.
He says, “we have reignited the flame of truth of karate-do and we are going to keep this
light burning for as long as it takes. It makes a huge difference to everyone who embraces
it and does so by changing their lives for the better and also improves their level of aware-
ness”. This light represents the teachings of Gogen Sensei and other great teachers, says Kan-
cho Deena Naidu. Both Goshin-Kai and Goshin Kan believe in the concept of truth and it ex-
plores all areas with deeper understanding.

Kancho has been practicing martial arts from the age of 11. After he graduated out of the college
in 1976, he became the Leader of Goshin Kan Karate-do, a name given to him by Gogen Sensei
which incidentally, was also the name of the dojo of Goshi Shihan, the third son of Gogen Sen-
sei.
Kancho Deena Naidu is also the head of Goshin-kai International which was formulated to bring
like minded Karate-ka together from all around the globe for the common goal of tradi-
tional karate-do. His dojos are well known for their human values program and the only one of
its kind in the world for Budo exponents. His teaching in human values is in conjunction with
physical karate. Kancho says that every bujutsu teacher has a responsibility to his students, to
give them the best in the arts, in terms of the proper understanding in the physical, mental and
spiritual knowledge. “Without self control, the mind will be tempted to use the art for the wrong
reason, without spiritual development the student will stagnate and not grow into a higher level of
awareness. Spirituality is not religion; it is about love, compassion, tolerance, kindness and an
understanding that goes beyond body and mind.”
Through the study of martial artists, teachers, as well as students develop great power. All prac-
titioners of these arts, as well as teachers must never abuse their power on any level, be it physi-
cal, emotional or verbal. Bringing harm to others without good cause is tragic. It was for this rea-
son that teachers in the old days used to screen people before accepting them as students. Peo-
ple with bad motives had no chance of joining a school with excellent standards of great knowl-
edge and skills. It was also the practice of head teachers to carefully select students who wanted
to be teachers of their art. A bujutsu art must never become like fast food. There are many good
organisations and some great teachers with incredible skill. They have a great concern that ka-
rate-do is being cheapened. The general public have little or no idea in the differences between
good karate and the awful one. If they join a bad school two things may happen;
1) They realise after a while that joining martial arts was a waste and put off from the art to
never do it again.
2) Develop hopeless techniques and terrible habits that will be detrimental to life.
Most people enlist with a school trusting that the person instructing wearing a black belt is a
genuine black belt and is knowledgable about the art. To them it looks like karate and the person
wearing a black belt must be a teacher. Little do they know that, ‘it is not all gold that glitters.’ It is
alleged that students below green belt are posing as instructors wearing black belts and taking
classes. This is a real shame. Not so long ago a head teacher (who on video could not even do
his first basic kata), giving a sales speech once to his new recruits said “ People are like spa-
ghetti, when you throw it up against the wall, some stick and some fall, so don’t worry about that
which falls because there are others”.
Teachers of the past were the pinnacles of goodness. They were special and taught with care.
This was so because every true teacher understood that they were dealing with the lives of peo-
ple. Teachers of this calibre knew that if they set an example of a life of goodness then this will
have a snow ball effect on others. There is no value in an art that offers nothing, not even a good
teacher. In these fast learning schools there are no lessons on anything of value more especially
on ethics, morals or virtues. There is a saying, “For bad to continue good people must do noth-
ing.” Many of the opinion “each to their own.’ What about human responsibility?

Good evening! I did ask, can you kindly share on the concept of 'Hihyo' and its use
in dojo instruction.
It is well needed as a teacher and student. Criticism is well needed. It is important
also whose knowledge you receive. Teacher and student must be humble to re-
ceive (Hihyo) Guidance. Revisiting basics, adjustments etc is important if that is
what you asking.

True karate teaches important life values that a person will carry and be able to share for
generations to come. These ethics obtained can be used to contribute to the enrichment
of the family and community. It is a progressive journey over the years, each level offers
set goals and skills to aspire to. It is a journey that never ends, as learning is a lifetime
pursuit.
Parents of children that are interested in getting their children into some form of defence and
even adults themselves must consider every aspect before joining their children into an organisa-
tion. Investigate the back ground without listening to just a sales pitch. Karate-do was never a
selling product; it is a necessity in a troubled world of uncertainty. People in this type of art have
to learn defence of value on every level such as on the physical, mental, emotional etc. Just
punching and kicking is not enough – when and how to execute techniques is of primary impor-
tance. When choosing an organisation or school consider a teacher that is firm with discipline as
well as loving, who knows the art and has had the right schooling.
People trust organisations to do the right thing and think they are getting value for their money
only to discover that in some organisations teachers real grade was a green belt posing as a
black belt. Karate-do is not just physical, even that has to be taught correctly. In just a single solid
punch there are more than ten things to consider, the hip alone has to move four times. Can a
green belt know how to teach this? As it is said you can fool some of the people some of the time
but you cannot fool all the people all the time. The real karate enthusiast will never be a part of
an organisation that has a green belt teaching, but travel miles to find an authentic school with a
genuine teacher who understands the art. In this country, there are some excellent teachers
in every art of bujutsu. These instructors have put in years of hard training to become great and
good practitioners. Seek them out, find teachers who offer real value and be patient about learn-
ing and make sacrifice to travel if you have to. One of my friends, Keihei Sakamoto Shihan used
to travel three hours by train to and from Hombu Dojo to train. He is one of the greatest Karate
teachers of all time. Here, was a dedicated man who sacrificed his time and made great effort, so
that he could learn from a first-class teacher. He valued what he was learning. His eyes and ears
were opened and he learnt well and became one the top instructors of the art. Distance was not
a problem because his love for the art and the opportunity to learn from an excellent teacher mo-
tivated him to travel. The end result was he became exemplary in his art and I, too, was also mo-
tivated by Sakamoto Shihan to make sacrifices to get somewhere in life.
Ethics and Values are most essential
Kancho Deena Naidu’s organisation has a fully integrated system of learning values, the results
of which has been outstanding. Such training is about developing students character so that will
have a brighter future in terms of productivity and positivity. Kancho says if we need a bet-
ter tomorrow, then the children of today have to be trained to lead their lives in a proper manner.
Each will become a leader in their own right and in so doing they will form a path that others will
follow. Generations to come will be on the upswing of a better life for all. “They’-being the young
students, he says are the beacons of light in the sea of darkness. Martial arts with its good train-
ing methods are a means to a better future. The world can and will change for the better, every-
one has to play their part and contribute to a better world in their way. We must start now by
training the young in real values for living righteously. Every teacher must have a say to make a
difference. A teacher is a leader and a bestower of truth. He/she sets the pace, the pattern
and the path for students to follow. If the instructor however, has none of these qualities then
he/she cannot have the name ‘teacher’. In the east teachers are named Guru, Sensei, Sifu etc.

all these names have special meaning. It means remover of ignorance, or enlightened one or
one with knowledge. A Sensei is not a coach training someone to excel in a sport. He/she is a
person of profound understanding and knowledge of life as well as the physical aspects of the
art.
The purpose of any institute or school of learning is to instil into the minds of students knowl-
edge of their expertise. If, however, this knowledge is wrongly taught, it will consequentially be
incorrectly practised. This will be detrimental to all concerned, especially for those in the field of
martial arts. Students must learn and understand the risks involved in Karate. There are huge
dangers and one’s life could be at stake. It could be that of the student or that of the attacker.
There is no doubt that if karate training is kept on just a physical level of attack and defence then,
the human mind understands this art to be an aggressive way of resolving issues. Students who
train without proper guidance will think of their art as just a violent means for protection and will
defend themselves in the most aggressive way. In the case of those who cannot control their ag-
gression the situation may become catastrophic, whereby people may get seriously hurt, be
maimed or even fatally injured. Aggression breeds aggression. Karate is neither good nor bad; it
is purely an instrument for defence. The mind through its education becomes a tool that uses
what it learns in either a positive or negative way. The type of school we learn from has a great
impact on behaviour patterns – to be good or bad.
Teachers in Goshin kan pay a lot of attention to detail, in improving the quality of their student’s
ability and their life. It is not a huge organisation and students travel great distances to attend our
classes. We do not have low grades taking classes. Teachers have become teachers because of
their understanding of the art. Our teachings, includes values and virtues. Kancho said “I remem-
ber many years ago I had the roughest of all men who belong to a club that did not have a good
reputation. He said to me that he wants his child to learn my type of karate so that this child could
develop into a good human being. There were other cases when hardened criminals came to
learn this art so that it can improve their thinking and consequently change their life. Every hu-
man being has goodness within them. There is none in this world that is completely bad. True
Karate-do brings out that goodness, no matter how tiny it is and expands it to greater horizons
thereby changing life for the better.”
The art of Budo has been developed through study of defence mechanics of wild animals. It was
then adapted for humans to use to protect ourselves. We are humans and not animals. It is the
quality of the humane in us that makes the difference between the animal and us. Allowing the
ego to have its way descends our thought patterns and thereby bringing out qualities that are not
good. The mind has to become disciplined to handle the ego. E.G.O means Easing Goodness
Out. Each person is an individual with his/her own personality or ego. Ego is only bad, when the
individuals become self-important in their ways. In martial arts we develop incredible power of
both the mind and body and this can be the cause of huge problems if the mind is not controlled.
Traditional teachers have always advised students that they must be in total control of
their minds. This means responsibility in defence by using both common and spiritual
sense even against violent attackers.
The physical art teaches us skill - this means the ability to defend oneself from hostile attacks
with practical force. Many take away the ‘S’ in skill and it becomes an art to ‘kill’, this means de-
structive and dishonourable means of defence. With the ‘S’, it is an art that embraces Spirituality
in terms of tolerance, compassion and love. In other words, it reminds us through our conscious-
ness to use discretion
