3. Solar PV Systems
Solar PV panels use silicon semi‐conductors to convert light from the
sun into electricity. The energy generated is ‘free’ and renewable, and
PV systems emit no carbon dioxide.

almost any size
o ‘Plugs‐in’ easily to existing electrical infrastructure
o No moving parts, so basically maintenance free post‐installation

4. CO2 Reductions and Economic Benefits
The energy produced by PV systems is totally CO2 free. The emissions
(embodied CO2) associated with the production, installation and maintenance
of the systems themselves are minimal and are usually recovered within 2‐5
years.

From April 2010 it’s proposed that UK will have a Feed- A look at the economics and of a large PV system.
In Tariff, paying owners of renewable energy systems a

5. PV Systems for Rural Businesses
The introduction of FiT will transform the economic case for PV systems and make it easier for rural
businesses to invest in renewable energy. As well as the obvious benefits from a guaranteed annual
income, a PV system is an excellent way of showing commitment to the environment and your
business’s understanding of green issues. This can be useful competitive advantage in an
increasingly environmentally aware market.
Why Install a PV System? Planning Permission
PV systems may or may not require planning permission,
oGuaranteed annual income depending on the area in which the site is located and the
type of system installed. Roof mounted systems can often be
installed without planning permission, but ground‐mounted
oReduced long‐term electricity costs
systems can require it. In either case, Segen’s dedicated
planning team will establish what’s required at an early

oMaintenance‐free technology DNO Permission
oEasy to specify and install In order to connect a PV system to the grid, permission is
required from the District Network Operator (DNO) that
