SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS AND
ENGLISH PROFICIENCY AMONG
KPTM STUDENTS

INTRODUCTION
• According to American Psychological Association, (Association)
socioeconomic status can be defined as socioeconomic status (SES) is often
measured as a combination of education, income, and occupation.
• In this research strand, it is cleared that socioeconomic status effects the
students’ development since they children small and up to adolescence.
• This research is conducted to come out with answers related to students’
proficiency and academic status. Lower socioeconomic status students often
display difficulty with language skills and struggle with reading
BACKGROUND RESEARCH
• Socioeconomic status (SES) is probably the most widely used contextual
variable in education research. Increasingly, researchers examine
educational processes, including academic achievement, in relation to
socioeconomic background (Bornstein & Bradley, 2003; Brooks-Gunn &
Duncan, 1997; Coleman,1988; McLoyd, 1998).
• In this research strand, it is cleared that socioeconomic status effects the
students’ development since they children small and up to adolescence.
This research is conducted to come out with answers related to students’
proficiency and academic status.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
• This research is important to educator in KPTM Kuala Lumpur as to identify
the types of students with different socioeconomic background in the
classroom.
• Some of students are quite weak in English classroom as they could not even
pronounce and speak confidently
• Their confidence level is low compare to students with high socioeconomic
status. Most lecturer has found out that, students with socioeconomic status
can speak and talk confidently in front of their friends..
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE
• To find out the comparison of English Performances between students
who come from Low Socioeconomic Status and High Economic Status
• To identify the relationship between socioeconomic status of parents and
students’ English Performances
• To investigate on the socioeconomic status of the parents affect the
English Performances of KPTM students

INTRODUCTION • According to American Psychological Association, (Association) socioeconomic status can be defined as socioeconomic status (SES) is often measured as a combination of education, income, and occupation. • In this research strand, it is cleared that socioeconomic status effects the students’ development since they children small and up to adolescence. • This research is conducted to come out with answers related to students’ proficiency and academic status. Lower socioeconomic status students often display difficulty with language skills and struggle with reading
  • 3. BACKGROUND RESEARCH • Socioeconomic status (SES) is probably the most widely used contextual variable in education research. Increasingly, researchers examine educational processes, including academic achievement, in relation to socioeconomic background (Bornstein & Bradley, 2003; Brooks-Gunn & Duncan, 1997; Coleman,1988; McLoyd, 1998). • In this research strand, it is cleared that socioeconomic status effects the students’ development since they children small and up to adolescence. This research is conducted to come out with answers related to students’ proficiency and academic status.

PROBLEM STATEMENT • This research is important to educator in KPTM Kuala Lumpur as to identify the types of students with different socioeconomic background in the classroom. • Some of students are quite weak in English classroom as they could not even pronounce and speak confidently • Their confidence level is low compare to students with high socioeconomic status. Most lecturer has found out that, students with socioeconomic status can speak and talk confidently in front of their friends..

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE • To find out the comparison of English Performances between students who come from Low Socioeconomic Status and High Economic Status • To identify the relationship between socioeconomic status of parents and students’ English Performances • To investigate on the socioeconomic status of the parents affect the English Performances of KPTM students
