INTRODUCTION
Museums play a great part in the education of school children as they
bring home to them much more vividly than any prosaic lectures, the
discoveries of the past and the various developments that have taken place in
many fields of science and technology. The social studies museum plays an
important role in imparting instruction in social studies.
Organization of social science museum can be taken up as a co-curricular
activity. Museums have great educative value. These are recreation centers also.
These contain non reading materials which represents valuable information
concerning the past periods. Events, persons etc. are presented in the form of
real objects, pictures, drawings etc. The museums can procure and maintain
various materials that could be effectively used in class room teaching. These
can be collected, classified, and exhibited by students and teachers. It provides
insight in to how people lived, how society has progressed and how science has
developed since time immemorial. It stimulates enthusiasm for deep study and
research among students as well as teachers.
SOCIAL SCIENCE MUSEUM
The museum as an instrument of popular education is a twentieth century
phenomenon. Until very recently museums were private clubs for the

intellectually privileged and exhibitions were arranged in such a way as to be
almost meaningless to scientifically or artistically uninformed visitors. The
secondary education commission on the role of school museums observed “
museums play a great part in the education of school children as they bring
home to them much more vividly than any prosaic lectures, the discoveries of
the past and the various developments that have taken place in many fields of
science and technology. These museums were made up of materials used in
class room teaching which in many cases are collected classified and exhibited
by students with or without the help of a teacher. The museum activities may be
an extracurricular function of the class or the school or they may be in corporate
in to a scientific experimental method of teaching”.
OBJECTIVES OF MUSEUM
 To form within the class room an embryonic community dedicated to the
usual occupations reflected in the school life of adults
 To permit visual instruction and experimentation with actual museum
specimens
 To stimulate enthusiasm for study and research among both teachers and
students

 To stimulate interest, co-operation and participation in the cultural
activities and scientific research conducted by the larger museums
 To instruct students in proper scientific methods of laboratory research
and museum conservation and exhibition techniques
TYPES OF MUSEUM
a) Public museum: Containing different material or developmental stages of
society or culture.
b) Mobile museum: Moving in a big truck or van to take it into different places
or villages
c) Local museum: At state or district headquarters containing articles excavated
from the area.
d) School museum: Containing articles prepared by students. School museum
should have separate sections for languages, social sciences and for physical
sciences. It encourages “learning by doing”. School museum motivate students
to prepare objects for school museum and satisfy their urge for construction and
creativity.

IMPORTANCE OF MUSEUM
1. The museum can procure and maintain various materials that could
collectively museums can procure used in class room teaching
2. The teacher can take the students to the museum to observe relevant
material if available before or after teaching a particular lesson
3. It makes the teaching of social science lively and provides direct
experience
4. These throw light on political social cultural and artistic developments of
different periods in different countries.
5. It helps to inculcate values such as national integration and international
understanding.
6. It adds reality to teaching and makes children active. It encourages
curiosity and self education.
7. It increases power for thinking and fosters imagination and creativity
among students.
Points to be kept in mind while using a social science museum
 Museum should be airy and well ventilated
 Articles should be securely placed

 The title and the date should be mentioned on the object along with the
information about its procurement.
 Insecticides may be used as and when necessary.
 Children should not be allowed to touch the objects.
 A list of all the objects placed in the museum should be maintained.
 The exhibits should be carefully cleaned and handled with care.
CONCLUSION
Museums are recreation centers. It enhances the education field. These
museums contain non reading material which presents valuable information
concerning the past periods events personal things and happenings in the form
of real objects, pictures, drawings etc. Museum provides information on how
people lived, how society has progressed, how science has developed since time
immemorial. These museums add reality to teaching and make children active.
