This document discusses the impact of social media on various aspects of life. It introduces popular social media platforms and notes that social media is important for staying connected with friends and informed about news. The document then explores both the advantages and disadvantages of social media, noting positive impacts on areas like education and business, but also negative impacts like addiction, fraud, and stress. Overall, it concludes that social media has both benefits and drawbacks for users and society.
Social media allows for consumer-generated content that is easy to share with little or no cost. It enables people to share information with friends and colleagues over the Internet using social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, and Twitter, which facilitate interaction and conversation. Social media is important because the average young person in America spends over 7 hours a day on electronic devices like phones, computers, and TV, and those aged 16-24 have come to expect information to be brief, instant, and constantly available through growing up online.
Impact of social networking sites on youthJustin Patel
This document discusses the positive and negative impacts of social networking sites on youth. Positively, social networks help youth stay connected with friends and family globally, gain knowledge about other cultures, and provide opportunities for networking and business. However, negatives include oversharing personal information which can change mindsets to prioritize online popularity over real world connections. Additionally, constant social media usage can replace meaningful face-to-face interactions and violate personal privacy for the sake of maintaining online profiles and connections.
Social media refers to online platforms that allow users to connect, share content, and interact. Popular social media sites include Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and WhatsApp. In Pakistan, over 44 million people use social media, with Facebook having 30 million users. Worldwide, over 3.7 billion people use the internet, with 2.3 billion active on social media. While social media allows for connection and information sharing, it can also have negative effects on youth like increased risk of psychological disorders, addiction, and negative impact on physical health from excessive screen time. However, social media also has benefits such as easier communication, information dissemination, and professional networking opportunities.
This document discusses the impacts of social media usage on teens. It notes that almost all teens use social media and spend significant time engaged with it. However, excessive social media usage can negatively impact teens' mental health, social skills, and motivation to do other activities. It can also expose them to risks like cyberbullying, which studies have linked to increased rates of suicide ideation. While social media has benefits, the document advocates for responsible usage and limiting time spent online to avoid these potential downsides.
Effects of Social Media on Young AdultsRatan Rajpal
The document discusses the effects of social media on young adults. It notes that while social media allows people to easily connect with others, it may also negatively impact real-life interactions and communication. Some disadvantages include reduced face-to-face interactions, increased online bullying, and the prioritization of online popularity over real-world connections. Social networking allows individuals to create public profiles, meet others with shared interests, and connect with friends and family. The first social network, Facebook, launched in 1997 and now has over 800 million users, with 50% logging on daily. Every 60 seconds on Facebook, 510,000 comments are posted, 293,000 statuses are updated, and 136,000 photos are uploaded. While social networks connect people and provide access to information, overuse can negatively impact productivity and relationships. Addiction is characterized by constantly checking for updates and prioritizing social media over real world interactions.

It then provides statistics on social media platform usage and notes that most youth prefer mobile access. While excessive social media use can negatively impact health, relationships, and productivity through addiction and exposure to cyberbullying or manipulation, it also enables global communication, information sharing, and business opportunities when used in moderation.
Social media has both advantages and disadvantages. It allows for easier communication and connection through means like Facebook, which was used in the Arab Spring to help spark revolutions. However, it can also negatively impact people's social lives, mental health, behavior, and religious practices. Too much time spent on social media can lead to loneliness, isolation, addiction, and exposure to misinformation. Face-to-face communication is important for fully understanding messages, as facial expressions and body language account for more than half of communication. Moderation is key to gaining benefits while avoiding harms.

Social networking allows individuals to construct public profiles, connect with others, and view connections within the system. It has evolved from early 20th century ideas to today's major sites like Facebook. Networks can be analyzed at the micro, meso, and macro levels. While social networking provides benefits like strengthening relationships, it also poses privacy and addiction risks. The growth of social networks is evidenced by increasing related patents over time.
Social media can negatively impact mental health in several ways:
1. It can be addictive due to psychological and physiological withdrawal symptoms when not using.
2. Frequent social media use is linked to increased feelings of sadness and decreased well-being and life satisfaction.
3. Comparing oneself to others' curated social media profiles often triggers feelings of jealousy and inadequacy that fuel depression.
Social networks allow individuals to construct online profiles, connect with other users, and share content. While early social networks focused only on connecting users, now most provide ways to interact through messaging, share multimedia content, and use applications. Some key concerns about social networks include privacy issues, identity theft through phishing, stalking, bullying, and how personal information shared could affect job opportunities. The future of social networks may see greater integration of mobile access and location-based features, as people increasingly belong to multiple networks. Ensuring privacy and portability of user data and identities across platforms will also be important issues going forward.
INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES ON PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL LIVES OF PE...IAEME Publication
The project “Influence of Social Networking Sites on personal and professional lives of people” mainly focuses on the impact of these sites on the people and the disturbance it causes to their lives in both personal and professional. The social networking sites are gaining a lot of popularity these days with almost all of the educated youth using one or the other such site. In this age of globalization, the world has become too small a place thanks to the electronic media and portals. These have played a crucial role in bridging boundaries and crossing the seas and enabling them to communicate on a common platform.
The document provides an overview of online social networking. It discusses the rise in popularity of social networking sites and some of the key factors driving their use, including the ability for users to connect with others who share common interests and freely create and share content. The document also examines how people are using social networking sites, categorizes different types of social networks, discusses opportunities and barriers to use, and reviews literature on potential harms from social networking site use. The executive summary highlights that social networking sites allow easy profile creation and contact networks, and that their rapid growth indicates they are now mainstream. It also summarizes findings on user behaviors and attitudes.
The document discusses how social media allows for more natural human connections by getting recommendations from others rather than companies. It then provides a brief history of major social media platforms and milestones from the 1960s to present. Both pros and cons of social media's effects on society are outlined, such as increased interaction but also decreased face-to-face communication and potential exposure to false or dangerous information. Risks like cyberbullying, decreased productivity at work, and lack of privacy control are also examined.
The document discusses the history and characteristics of social networks. It describes how social networking began with early systems like email and Geocities in the 1970s and 1990s. It outlines major current social networks like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google+. The document also discusses why people use social networks, the impact of social networks, and how social media played a role in the Arab Spring uprisings by helping spread messages of freedom and democracy.
A social networking service is an online platform that allows users to build social networks by connecting with other users who share interests and activities. Key features include user profiles, the ability to connect with friends and view their profiles, sharing content, and interacting through messaging. While social networks help users connect globally, they also raise privacy and safety issues that users must be aware of.

Social Networking and its impact on Youth, Culture, Communication and Behavior
-----------------------------------------------------------------
In this survey paper, I concluded six research projects on Social Networking and its impact. The Social Networking has become increasingly popular components of our everyday lives in today’s globalized society. They provide a context where people across the world can communicate, exchange messages, share knowledge, and interact with each other seamlessly.

This document discusses theories related to computer-mediated communication (CMC). It defines CMC as human communication via computers using text, images, audio, and video. Early social networking sites from the 1980s and 1990s are mentioned, as well as how CMC allows for identity fabrication but also truth. Theories discussed include diffusion of innovation theory, uses and gratifications theory, and concepts of online culture and power. Characteristics of social networking sites and their relationship to communication theory are also summarized.
Computer-mediated communication (CMC) refers to human communication through computers. Early CMC developed in the 1980s-1990s through simple websites and email. This led to the rise of social media platforms that allowed for user profiles and sharing of personal information. Theories like diffusion of innovation and uses and gratifications help explain how new communication technologies and trends spread online and how people use social media for information, entertainment, and social connection. While social media allows for connection, it also enables impression management and new forms of cultural influence through memes and online power dynamics.
Social networking sites have become increasingly popular in recent years. They allow users to build online communities of people with shared interests and explore others' interests. Popular social networking sites include Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Cyworld, and Bebo, which have attracted millions of users. In Malaysia, more people are spending time socializing and networking online due to increased mobile access and affordable internet services. Social networking sites provide benefits like maintaining social connections remotely, sharing photos and videos, and networking for business purposes. However, they also present risks if private or inappropriate information is posted.
This document discusses social networking, including its history, applications, trends, and popular sites. Social networking began with bulletin board systems in 1978 and allowed users to interact over phone lines. It discusses how social networks are used for education, healthcare, business, and science. The most popular social networks today are Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Qzone. The document also covers social networking in Sri Lanka and both the positive and negative impacts it can have.
Social media and the future of social networkingRussetanSc
Social media has evolved greatly over time and will continue to change the future. It started with basic communication tools like email and phones and now includes large social networks like Facebook and Twitter. These platforms have had major impacts on society such as influencing political movements and revolutions. However, increased social media use has also led to growing concerns around privacy, identity issues, cybercrime, and other negative impacts. Looking ahead, social networking will likely become even more integrated into work, education, and daily life, but these developments also may exacerbate existing problems with privacy, addiction, and mental health issues related to social media use.
Gunalan Ranganahan is presenting a final year project on the negative impacts of social networking. The project will use projection mapping to demonstrate how social networking can negatively impact individuals and society through teasing. Research found that while users are aware of potential downsides, many underestimate the risks or become addicted. The presentation will last 2-5 minutes and use text, images, video, animation and sound effects to metaphorically portray social networking's downsides like privacy issues, stress on families, and addiction. The goal is to educate viewers on social media's realities beyond communication.
Social networks have evolved significantly since the first one, SixDegrees, launched in 1997. They now allow users to communicate, market products and services, and spread news and information quickly. The document discusses the history of social networks and how they have changed from early sites like SixDegrees and LiveJournal. It also outlines current uses of social networks like Facebook and Twitter for communication, publicity, politics, healthcare, and education. Finally, it addresses how social networks have influenced society by enabling new ways to connect, share events, and spread information.
Social media is the use of electronic and internet tools to share and discuss information with online communities. Some positive effects of social media include establishing connections with people, sharing ideas and creativity, and accessing information from anywhere in the world. However, social media can also be addictive and negatively impact students' academic performance. It also opens users up to hackers, fraud, and health issues from overuse. Popular social media tools include WhatsApp, Twitter, Google+, and LinkedIn. Users must be aware of threats like social networking worms, phishing, trojans, data leaks, and shortened malicious links on social media. Parents and users should work to prevent these threats through safety precautions like privacy settings and not sharing personal information
The document discusses social networking sites and their evolution and use. It defines social networking sites as web-based services that allow users to construct a public profile, identify other users they are connected to, and view their connections. The document then traces the origins of social networking concepts back to ancient Greece and provides a history of developments in social network analysis in fields like psychology, anthropology and mathematics in the 1930s. It discusses current uses of social networking sites for communication, education, activism, professional networking and more. It also outlines advantages and disadvantages of social media use.
zkStudyClub - LatticeFold: A Lattice-based Folding Scheme and its Application...Alex Pruden
Folding is a recent technique for building efficient recursive SNARKs. Several elegant folding protocols have been proposed, such as Nova, Supernova, Hypernova, Protostar, and others. However, all of them rely on an additively homomorphic commitment scheme based on discrete log, and are therefore not post-quantum secure. In this work we present LatticeFold, the first lattice-based folding protocol based on the Module SIS problem. This folding protocol naturally leads to an efficient recursive lattice-based SNARK and an efficient PCD scheme. LatticeFold supports folding low-degree relations, such as R1CS, as well as high-degree relations, such as CCS. The key challenge is to construct a secure folding protocol that works with the Ajtai commitment scheme. The difficulty, is ensuring that extracted witnesses are low norm through many rounds of folding. We present a novel technique using the sumcheck protocol to ensure that extracted witnesses are always low norm no matter how many rounds of folding are used. Our evaluation of the final proof system suggests that it is as performant as Hypernova, while providing post-quantum security.

High performance Serverless Java on AWS- GoTo Amsterdam 2024Vadym Kazulkin
Java is for many years one of the most popular programming languages, but it used to have hard times in the Serverless community. Java is known for its high cold start times and high memory footprint, comparing to other programming languages like Node.js and Python. In this talk I'll look at the general best practices and techniques we can use to decrease memory consumption, cold start times for Java Serverless development on AWS including GraalVM (Native Image) and AWS own offering SnapStart based on Firecracker microVM snapshot and restore and CRaC (Coordinated Restore at Checkpoint) runtime hooks. I'll also provide a lot of benchmarking on Lambda functions trying out various deployment package sizes, Lambda memory settings, Java compilation options and HTTP (a)synchronous clients and measure their impact on cold and warm start times.

Conversational agents, or chatbots, are increasingly used to access all sorts of services using natural language. While open-domain chatbots - like ChatGPT - can converse on any topic, task-oriented chatbots - the focus of this paper - are designed for specific tasks, like booking a flight, obtaining customer support, or setting an appointment. Like any other software, task-oriented chatbots need to be properly tested, usually by defining and executing test scenarios (i.e., sequences of user-chatbot interactions). However, there is currently a lack of methods to quantify the completeness and strength of such test scenarios, which can lead to low-quality tests, and hence to buggy chatbots.
To fill this gap, we propose adapting mutation testing (MuT) for task-oriented chatbots. To this end, we introduce a set of mutation operators that emulate faults in chatbot designs, an architecture that enables MuT on chatbots built using heterogeneous technologies, and a practical realisation as an Eclipse plugin. Moreover, we evaluate the applicability, effectiveness and efficiency of our approach on open-source chatbots, with promising results.

Essentials of Automations: Exploring Attributes & Automation ParametersSafe Software
Building automations in FME Flow can save time, money, and help businesses scale by eliminating data silos and providing data to stakeholders in real-time. One essential component to orchestrating complex automations is the use of attributes & automation parameters (both formerly known as “keys”). In fact, it’s unlikely you’ll ever build an Automation without using these components, but what exactly are they?
Attributes & automation parameters enable the automation author to pass data values from one automation component to the next. During this webinar, our FME Flow Specialists will cover leveraging the three types of these output attributes & parameters in FME Flow: Event, Custom, and Automation. As a bonus, they’ll also be making use of the Split-Merge Block functionality.
You’ll leave this webinar with a better understanding of how to maximize the potential of automations by making use of attributes & automation parameters, with the ultimate goal of setting your enterprise integration workflows up on autopilot.

From Natural Language to Structured Solr Queries using LLMsSease
This talk draws on experimentation to enable AI applications with Solr. One important use case is to use AI for better accessibility and discoverability of the data: while User eXperience techniques, lexical search improvements, and data harmonization can take organizations to a good level of accessibility, a structural (or “cognitive” gap) remains between the data user needs and the data producer constraints.
That is where AI – and most importantly, Natural Language Processing and Large Language Model techniques – could make a difference. This natural language, conversational engine could facilitate access and usage of the data leveraging the semantics of any data source.
The objective of the presentation is to propose a technical approach and a way forward to achieve this goal.
The key concept is to enable users to express their search queries in natural language, which the LLM then enriches, interprets, and translates into structured queries based on the Solr index’s metadata.
This approach leverages the LLM’s ability to understand the nuances of natural language and the structure of documents within Apache Solr.
The LLM acts as an intermediary agent, offering a transparent experience to users automatically and potentially uncovering relevant documents that conventional search methods might overlook. The presentation will include the results of this experimental work, lessons learned, best practices, and the scope of future work that should improve the approach and make it production-ready.
[OReilly Superstream] Occupy the Space: A grassroots guide to engineering (an...Jason Yip
The typical problem in product engineering is not bad strategy, so much as “no strategy”. This leads to confusion, lack of motivation, and incoherent action. The next time you look for a strategy and find an empty space, instead of waiting for it to be filled, I will show you how to fill it in yourself. If you’re wrong, it forces a correction. If you’re right, it helps create focus. I’ll share how I’ve approached this in the past, both what works and lessons for what didn’t work so well.
In the realm of cybersecurity, offensive security practices act as a critical shield. By simulating real-world attacks in a controlled environment, these techniques expose vulnerabilities before malicious actors can exploit them. This proactive approach allows manufacturers to identify and fix weaknesses, significantly enhancing system security.
This presentation delves into the development of a system designed to mimic Galileo's Open Service signal using software-defined radio (SDR) technology. We'll begin with a foundational overview of both Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and the intricacies of digital signal processing.
The presentation culminates in a live demonstration. We'll showcase the manipulation of Galileo's Open Service pilot signal, simulating an attack on various software and hardware systems. This practical demonstration serves to highlight the potential consequences of unaddressed vulnerabilities, emphasizing the importance of offensive security practices in safeguarding critical infrastructure.
