Building Social Media
For Educators
-J. Ken Harmer
+
Successes with this course
 Expanding my professional and
personal network
 Learning about and creating
new ideas in my field….
 …which assisted me with
preparing long-term goals
 Helping me better understand
the technology exposed to my
students and opportunities
presented to them
+
Challenges
 Being exposed which invited
unwanted followers and much
more spam email
 Certain websites are blocked in
our school district
 My colleagues and employer
have access to my personal life
 My opinions may be used
against me for current or future
employment
+
Most useful tool?
+
And the winner is…Twitter!
 Twitter gave me the most
access to my professional
interests.
 It wasn't a lot of information to
process and gave me useful
links every day
 TweetDeck would help me
organize what topic I was
interested in on any specific
day
+
Delicious
 Personal note:
Last year our school was closed due to mold. We were split into
three locations within the district. We will move back into our
newly renovated school in September 2017.
Since I teach in all three buildings everyday, delicious.com has
been extremely helpful in organizing the websites I use for
instruction.
Twitter is currently the most useful for me because I can stay in
touch with local, national and international trends and changes in
education and my field of music
+
Pro’s and Con’s of Moodle and
Online Learning
 I enjoy going at my pace.
 I get stressed with deadlines
 I use Moodle in my classroom
 I have trouble finding time to
create a page worth using in my
classroom
 It supplements the Intrapersonal
learner in me
 It hinders the Interpersonal
learner in me
+ My current collections of work:
Twitter, Google+, Classroom 2.0, LinkedIn
+
Works in progress…Wix
 I will use this site regularly with
my students, but most sites I
want them to access are
blocked by my district.
 I can spend time this summer
creating my site for next school
year including:
o Audio recordings
o Current news stories in music
o Tutorials
