Jason Maxwell created a presentation summarizing his experience using social media for educational purposes. He found Twitter, Pinterest, and Schoology to be the most useful tools. Twitter allowed him to easily connect and share announcements with students, Pinterest helped him organize ideas and plans, and Schoology provided a comprehensive platform for assignments. Although Delicious presented challenges, Diigo became a valuable resource for continued professional development. The online format of the class allowed Maxwell to learn at his own pace and explore new tools outside his comfort zone. He is now better prepared to incorporate technology into his teaching and engage with digital native students.
3. Twitter:
Provides an easy and fast way to connect with large amount of people through a
computer, smart phone, or other internet enabled device. One of the best features for my
professional life is the ability to put out instant announcements/reminders for students to
see on their devices quickly.
Pinterest:
Although this site/smart phone application is often thought of as a place to find recipes or
craft ideas I found this site to be incredibly helpful for the education world. I was able to
create boards with quick reference pictures and ideas for developing plans for my
publication class. Through this application I am also able to share the inspirations with
students in the class, as well as other publication teachers.
Schoology:
I find this tool to be on the most comprehensive sites available for educators in 21st
century classrooms. It is easy for me to connect with the students in my classes and
provide them with the needed materials without the need for excessive papers. I am able
to post and collect assignments if I am away from the school for any reason. Finally,
through this site I can collaborate with other teachers in my school on extracurricular
activities or professional development opportunities.
Most Useful Tools
7. I believe my biggest success was creating my Diigo
account. This was not the site I had originally planned
to use for the assignment but I was able to create a
truly usable tool for my career. I foresee Diigo being a
large part of my continued professional development.
Also I more confident in using Twitter as a tool for
education rather than simply a way to follow famous
people. I connected with numerous people in my field
and will begin the new school year with lots of new
ideas and plenty of professional support via Twitter.
Successes
8. One of the biggest challenges I had was with the
Delicious site. I had originally planned to submit this
site as one of my topic projects but encountered
numerous issues while attempting to use the site. It
seemed that some the features were not working on
my computer so I attempted to work through the App
available on my smartphone. Eventually I moved on to
the Diigo site and found it to be much easier to access.
Challenges
9. The Moodle program made it easy to access the class
materials and assignments. The video tutorials
provided wonderful step by step explanations for the
new programs and sites. I was able to move the
material at a comfortable pace while trying new things
and moving out of my comfort zone in the social media
world.
Take on Moodle and Online learning
10. I am very pleased with the new tools I was able to work
with during this class. There are so many Web 2.0 tools
available to educators, but they often come in and out
of the spotlight so quick at professional development
sessions that teachers do not have time to truly process
the potential of the tools for their classes or students.
As a more veteran teacher it is imperative that I
continue to educate myself of these tools so I can truly
reach my digital native students. This class has helped
prepare me for the upcoming school year!
