1. Social Media
for educators
by Carolyn Burgman, March 2010
2. Successes & Challenges
tons of new resources and hard to get members for my
contacts Ning (leads but no takers)
good exposure to world of no response from any of
possibilities of social media my tweets (questions)
compilation of bookmarks/ not sure the best way to get
favorites {personal, people to follow you on
educational, work, etc.} twitter, especially in regard
to getting help with
educational topics
3. and online learning
easy, straightforward interface
course expectations and content was direct and
manageable
allowed for work at own pace
plenty of additional resources
good real-time demonstration of value of social media
5. Ning is the social platform for the world's interests and passions online. Millions
of people every day are coming together across Ning to explore and express
their interests, discover new passions, and meet new people around shared
pursuits. (www.ning.com)
Ning is a way to create your own social network on whatever topic you
choose. Once created you can invite people to join and begin collaboration
and networking.
There are also a wide range of existing Nings created that you can become a
member of and take advantage of learning in a whole new way.
I created my ning as a networking tool for yearbook advisers to collaborate and
share ideas, tools, and resources in the creation of their annual yearbooks.
7. Twitter is a real-time information network powered by people all around the
world that lets you share and discover what’s happening now.
Also known as micro-blogging (a form of blogging, short for web log)
Other known forms are Tumblr and status updates on Facebook or
MySpace
All entries are 140 characters or less
Can be a great resource IF you are following helpful people (this was a great
list to start for education purposes: http://tweepml.org/Teachers-to-
Follow/ )
8. continued
I found the list of educators to follow extremely informative
I have discovered a ton of resources through just checking in and seeing
what people are “tweeting about”
I also tried TweetDeck (an application to better manage Twitter)
I found this helpful and an easier way to track, tweet, and respond to
tweets.
For the mobile version of this I tried Twitterific and TweetDeck for iphone/
ipod touch. I found both of these to be helpful and an easy way to access
twitter.
10. Delicious is a social bookmarking website, which means it is designed to
allow you to store and share bookmarks on the web, instead of inside your
browser. (http://delicious.com)
This allows you access to your bookmarks on whatever computer you are
on.
Social Aspect: Allows you to share your bookmarks with others.
Option to make bookmarks private as well
Find other people’s bookmarks and add them to your collection!
A great tool to gather resources and to find new ones.
12. Diigo is a powerful research tool and a knowledge sharing community.
Diigo allows you to store bookmarks similar to delicious.com, but it also
allows you to annotate web pages through highlighting information and
placing sticky notes on the pages.
You can then share the annotated pages with others through a personal
learning network and get new information by following those who are
pursuing similar interests.
You can also create a private or public group to share findings and
information through this website.
This could be a great tool to teach in the classroom especially when
doing research for specific projects or papers.
14. Simply put, Glog is a kind of poster - fully designed by yourself! Glog is a
fancy creation from text, images, music and video. (www.glogster.com
This could be a great resource in the classroom to compile information or
could even be used to centrally locate information.
There are many options for colors, text, images, etc - and all are linkable.
16. Animoto automatically produces beautifully orchestrated, completely unique
video pieces from your photos, video clips and music. Fast, free and
shockingly easy. (http://animoto.com )
This could be a great resource in the classroom to make a quick video to
share containing certain pictures on a topic.
The downside is the free version is not downloadable and you have to link
to it to see it - although it still has some neat potential.
17. Most Useful Tools
Probably actually signing up for a delicious account was the
most useful tool for me. I believe that I will get the most
consistent use out of that.
I was pleasantly surprised about Twitter and the amount of
resources that could be aquired just by following certain groups
of people.
I also enjoyed learning about the many other tools out there and
giving them a try. It is always good to keep learning!
18. Social Media
for educators
The sites
mentioned in this
presentation are
just a small
portion of the
growing world of
social media.
