- I’d like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land where you are, where I am and where anyone else watching might be. I’ve not been able to come down the hill because my wife needs to be working in her surgery. You might see my children waving from the background. So I’m using this as an opportunity to try something new, which is only possible using social media
- Need to consider what you are trying to do. But also, sometimes don’t know what is possible that you might want to try to do until you’ve had a go, and seen what others are doing. Also conferences are a good time to dip your toe in. Use hashtag #GP!14Conference Also worth noting that much of the time, the pblished evidence is about 18m behind what is actually happening.
- These are examples of practice websites. Anyone have a practice website? Anyone thinking of having a practice website? Look at sections of practice website, and what you can do. Broadcast – news, opening times, check hours of particular doctor, contact details. Interactive – book appointments, blog Social – FB, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube Need to consider how you will create and manage content – if you want people to keep coming back to it. Need to be clear on what your website is for. Platforms – Wordpress; (Blogger? Tumblr?)
- Anyone have a practice Facebook page? Anyone thinking of having a practice FB page? FB very familiar to many, including your patients. Familiarity may mean people are more comfortable commenting, posting questions. Need to be able to manage this – 2 way conversation – including complaints. (Though handling these well (and visibly?) will enhance your reputation. Similar tools to create pages in Google+ and LinkedIn (not Twitter) Google+ - fewer people on this. LinkedIn – mainly professional rather than patients.

- Connection placeholder. My network finds stuff for me – examples This is not about me broadcasting my opinions. (well, it also is that!) But that’s not where the power comes from. - Other ideas for using social media for education? MOOCS? Flipped classrooms? Skype? Tutorials. RACGP already using closed webinars. (My own feeling is that patients are still separated from Medical Education, but if we’re serious about patient centred care, we need patients involved – SoMe is ideal for this. In theory. Barriers to using SoMe for education? Perhaps QI&CPD points needed? Also worth mentioning AnnMarie Cunningham, guru on use of social media in medical education (as well as e-learning.
- Online support and forums for GPs This is a new one on facebook. Also Other forums do exist but need managing and adminstration Can get very large. Become very clinically focussed. Just4Docs (from Aus Doc) not really conducive to peer support! (IMHO)
- Using SoMe for peer support. Could you imagine using this? Pros and cons?
- The clever bit – the stoke of genius! Set up an anonymous account – via pages, create page. Invite this account to be a member of Dr Anonymous. Let all the real people in the group have Manager access to this page. They can now all post to the group as Dr Anonymous, so no-one knows who has posted.
- Don’t forget, social media is not a broadcast medium. It’s social media, not social media You can learn from patients Indigenous X – not Yin Paradies! Example of hearing different stories and experiences.
- Your patients are certainly looking at you. What you do could even enhance their care!

- Formalised system for patient feedback – not just a doctor rating website, but health services sign up, feedback gets acted on. Twitter, website, (Michael Greco is CEO)
- Advocacy Placeholder Use examples of @WePublicHealth ChangeDayAustralia Scrap the Cap No Advertising please (Watch this space…) All use multiple forms of social media to engage. Think also The Ice-Bucket Challenge – was massive of Facebook (less so on Twitter) (And some worried that FB is filtering what you see – so as FB full of ice-bucket challenges, Twitter was going off about the killing of a black teenager by a policeman in Ferguson in US. No traditional reporters there, but many tweeting) Also FB experiment in manipulation of users’ emotions WITHOUT THEIR CONSENT!!)
- Education! #FOAMed and FOAM4GP – a passionate group of doctors, medical students and others reading and writing education for each other. Originally developed around Emergency medicine community, so can be quite Emergency focussed. Passionate group, interesting debates – eg whether to go peer reviewed or not. No QI&CPD points. How do you assess quality? (Is this any different to anywhere else on the web?)
- Future of peer support? Future of SoMe? Box on right is from the poster presented at the RCGP UK conference Eg – is there a use for Vine? 6s Med Ed videos!
- Digital Divide
- Internet access at dwellings with Aboriginal households.
