- Welcome to the diigosocial bookmarking workshop. In this workshop I will talk about the importance of sharing between educators and how diigomakes it easy to do this. We will look at some examples of diigo tools and then take a break to sign up, if you so choose, to the diigo group that I have already set up for our school. We will come back together to discuss questions or other ideas that may come up.
- Diigo is an online social bookmarking tool that collects, organizes and allows users to share resources quickly and easily.
- ‘Putting our heads together’ is a tried and true way of finding a solution to problem. We brainstorm, we talk, we work together to figure out the best way to tackle the issue at hand. Getting input from other people gives us fresh perspective and gives us a chance to approach something in a entirely new way. As an educator you want to present your students with the best practices for learning. You probably have lessons you love and that work. Other times you wish that you could approach a topic differently because the message doesn’t seem to be getting through. This is where sharing comes in.
- It used to be that teachers spent a large portion of their time trying to find resources. Inventing lesson plans and implementing them took up quite a bit of time. Now teachers spend that time filtering through the huge amount of information available today. Instead of only creating content we are picking and sorting through vast resources that can be very distracting and time consuming. Using a social bookmarking tool is a good way to start to pare down and organize some of those resources.
- Diigo allows you to dramatically improve your online productivity. Researching, sharing and collaborating, the three key values of Diigo, are made easier with this bookmarking tool. This tool provides us with a new way to grow as educators.
- Here is a shot of my library in my diigo account. This is my library where all of the sites that I think are important are kept. I add to this library constantly. If I come across a neat lesson, on dinosaurs for example, that I might use in the future, I add it to my library.
- When there is specific information that you need to research you can annotate, archive and organize what you find.(click)Diigo provides you with innovative tools that enable you to highlight text on a page and add sticky notes. Annotating your pages helps you to find exactly what on the page is worth revisiting or re-reading. (click) The archive aspect relates to the ability to capture pages that may cease to exist! Even if a web address ceases to exist you will still have access to the information on that page! These pages are also searchable.(click) Organizing is made easier with the help of tags and lists. Let’s go back to the dinosaur lesson that I found. I would add a tag called dinosaurs. This will help me find it in the future. Tagging the page is an additional way for you to keep track of what you have. I would also add this dinosaur lesson into a list. I have a list titled ‘lesson plans’ and I would add this dinosaur lesson into that list. These lists can be private or you may choose to add them to a group.
- Here is a shot of my own lists that I use to keep track of interesting articles, classroom resources, lesson plans, tools, blogs and more. It’s up to you to create lists that make sense to you. In addition to putting these bookmarks in lists I also add tags, as I mentioned, to make finding what I want even easier.
- Sharing is what makes Diigo stand out from other social bookmarking tools. (click) Creating or joining a group is easy and allows you to facilitate conversations around content. These groups can be within your school about educational topics or worldwide and be about other topics that interest you.(click)You have the ability to comment on links that people send out to your group or comment on a link that you add to a group. (click)You can build a personal learning network outside of the school group based on topics that you want to learn more about or a community that you want to contribute to.
- Here is a shot of the groups I belong to. During our break, I will give everyone a chance to sign up for the new Tapestry group I have created. Signing up in Diigo only takes a few minutes.
- Collaborating helps educators move in a common direction and share ideas and methods. (click) You will get email alerts that tell you about new additions to the group. You can manage how often you receive these alerts. You can be alerted instantly or collect the updates weekly. (click) You can comment on the additions on or off the group page. As every group member contributes, the group grows into a powerful central hub built around the group’s mission.
- To ensure that not only our students, but ourselves as educators, are lifelong learners we need to keep challenging our methods and beliefs. Sharing our ideas and resources is a key aspect of our continued education. Collegiality fosters respect and pushes us to a higher level of excellence.
- When a teacher comes across a neat resource or tool, it makes sense to share it! It strengthens us as educators. It will make us consider and re-consider how we can be the best teachers we can be! Diigo is a social bookmarking tool that allows this to happen easily. If you use a great lesson planning site, share it! If you come across an article that inspired you, share it! As teachers we need to lean on each other and use all of the resources that are around us.
- The more people that join and participate inour group the more powerful the experience of sharing our perspectives and best practices.
- Talking and sharing between teachers at our school does happen. We talk to each other in the hall, send an e-mail, share an article, sit in on a meeting. But what about the resources outside of our school? What about teachers in Pittsburgh or Dallas or Dubai, that have created a lesson or found a 2.0 tool that would fill that gap in our own education? Shouldn’t we take advantage of their hard work and share with them what we have found to work in our schools and classrooms? Having collaborative lessons across cultural lines will stretch us as educators and create meaningful lessons for our students. It is all possible with the power of sharing.
